    Your closing points described me to the T. But while I would rather spare innocent people the pain that comes with existing, I'm not convinced antinatalism is the moral high ground or that everyone should adopt that philosophy. Life can be so beautiful, and while I personal have no taste for it, and there are millions who do and billions more who will.

    My only thing is, i dont think that what Frank does really punishes them. I mean sure they die, but they just die and thats it. At least with vigilantes like DD (and Batman but wtv) they are usually beaten to the point where they are unable to move and have to eat through a straw. At that point you're giving some of them a mercy by ending their misery vs making it painfully obvious that they either need to change or just die from another brutal injury that sticks this time, whether it be from another vigilante, cops who don't know how to not use lethal force, or prisoners with no reason to not brutalize you. Matt's side works because it can weed out people who want redemption over people who assume that their injuries cant become permanent with another bad decision. And it does at least instill the fear of paralysis from being broken so badly.

    Good video analyzing some important philosophical conundrums, but there's also the usual misleading statistics and data cited here. Individuals speak about "over-incarceration" and the "severity of punishment having no notable effect" when the alternative methods and measurements prove the inverse rapidly. When laws and regulations are enacted in order to circumvent the punishments and repercussions that have evolved and been formulated for hundreds of years in favor of arbitrarily moving numbers in one direction or another, then it becomes blatantly apparent that these codes were put in place and enforced for a reason. And that's not my arguing that they're perfect or infallible. nor that the individuals charged with enacting these regulations are without corruption or defect. But those blanket statistics trying to get around rules that have been formed due to hundreds of years of human experience are 9/10 times misleading or biased as hell. When you dig into the data and look at individual groups and subgroups, you get a much better idea of what's going on.

    The Punisher is/has/will always be shit. The point is put him into conflict with others who aren’t traumatized violent psychopaths. That makes for good stories where we can be engaged in interesting questions. That’s the point. He’s a foil. He’s not supposed to be seriously considered. Unfortunately the medium itself attracts folks to the character. The dilemmas presented in MCU media are trite and shallow. They deserve a cursory glance at best and should be enjoyed as entertainment (and good entertainment) and nothing more. The MCU is a rootless enterprise, separated from any concrete political reality and are closer to propaganda than anything else. Case in point, just look at the comment section. We got both-siders talking about them both being right. They’re individual actors. No one has that right on their own to decide who dies. Not to mention, again, the absolute separation from reality. The Punisher, is more akin to the spree shooters of today than any hero. He is a radicalized psycho. Should we have a “real” Punisher, he would be murdering people who are homeless, mentally ill, in poverty etc. and we know those problems related to crime as phenomenon are rooted in systemic causes.

    Depends, really. If you want to become an incorruptible symbol, a symbol people can look up to whenever we speak justice, then you go with Daredevil approach. If you don't really care about the politics, then go punisher. Unfortunately, society thinks as a whole. Some people might think differently, and deviate from the mass mentality, but at the end of the day, the majority wins. Politics has a big role in every decision a society acts on. If you want their support, then go Daredevil.

  • @ODXT

    For me it's a knowledge problem, "How do you know the person you are shooting is actually guilty?" This is best shown in the first comic Punisher ever appeared in, his target was Spider-Man. So even if we accept the same sort of Utilitarian ethics Punisher is operating under, he would be wrong. Because we would be focused on beneficial outcomes, which his method cannot guarantee and could easily go wrong. He could do more good with a different approach. Hell, Daredevil could do more by including a systemic approach (by addressing the origins of crime and the issues of late Capitalism).

    The video helped my researching of Antinatlism, and I have some questions to help me understand the viewpoint more: Do antinatalist believe in Free Will? (If we cannot decide whether we exist or how we die outside of taking our lives, do we possess free will since we're bound by those fates? If we don't, is it possible for someone to even violate our will/choice by causing us to exist against our will, and if we do then is the idea we possess a limited will? Do antinatalist believe morality and suffering are subjective or objective? I've heard it mentioned pleasure and happiness are subjective (in reference to studies examining it globally via demographics), which is true since such things are influenced by environment, culture, etc. Can the same be said about suffering and morality? Do antinatalist believe having children is objectively wrong or subjectively wrong (believe themselves to have an objective view or subjective view)? And, in what context is it acknowledged some may come to antinatalism based on subjective suffering/experiences/cultural beliefs, etc. What is considered suffering? Is it any amount of discomfort, unnecessary discomfort/pain, (how is unnecessary defined also), or specific types of discomfort or pain? For example - I'm a woman, who has painful cramping. Cramping occurs because the uturus contracts to shed its lining - is that pain unnecessary because I wouldn't/shouldn't have otherwise existed to experience the pain, or is it not under the umbrella of unnecessary suffering because the pain is technically part of a natural biological process? Can people within antinatalism decide for themselves what is unnecessary suffering, or are these concepts pre-defined by the philosophy? (And can antinatalist disagree on what specific things are unnecessary suffering? Or, would that even matter in the philosophy?) If the absence of pleasure is not bad since no one is deprived of pleasure, does this also mean perhaps the absence of pain isn't good since no one is saved from suffering? In both cases no one exists to have either experience; would that mean nothing good nor bad is happening at all? Now, my last question involves people that argue against it - if antinatalists themselves say life can become worth experiencing/witnessing to even an undesirable degree (like a bad movie you stay to watch), could natalist use this as a justification to keep reproducing (The, 'it can't be that bad then' argument)? Sorry if the comment is long, I want to understand as much as possible. :3

    • @thesolipsistcinema
      @thesolipsistcinema 9 дней назад

      @jasmineteutsch9043 Thanks for watching! I’m not sure if all antinatalists don’t believe in free will, but I don’t. (My video on parasite goes into my thoughts on free will a bit more). But even if someone harms you against your “will”, whether or not you are the author of your wants and actions, doesn’t matter. The harm you feel is still real. In talking about free will, I think it’s easy to get lost in the “well why does anything matter” mindset. But just because we aren’t the true author of our wills, it doesn’t mean we aren’t the vessel that still has them. And actions still have to be enacted for change to happen or in response to things, regardless of if we were truly “free” to do them. Morality being objective vs subjective is very nuanced and I’m not exactly sure if there’s a universal stance on it with antinatalism. I would say that we say the suffering that will result from bringing a child into the world is objective. But the levels of suffering are of course subjective to each’s experience. Some will say that we just hate our lives and are projecting our apathy and misanthropy to the rest of the world. And sure there’s probably instances of that, but for me, the main points of antinatalism don’t rely on subjective accounts of suffering. It’s from a philosophical and logic based standpoint. Though practically, there are a lot of emotions involved like simply having a disinterest in raising children. But a lot if not most of the objections come from concerns of them suffering. From the point of antinatalism, I suppose ALL pain and discomfort would be considered unnecessary. Because by not being born, it could have all been avoided. But for the unnecessary or biological pain we have once were born, I’d say a lot of that is the biggest reason for being antinatalist. The struggle of working hard to merely exist and survive, how hard it is to stay in good shape, avoiding addictions, countless mental and physical traumas etc…. But at the same time, once the damage of being born has already been done, then there are some amounts of suffering that might be worth it to continue living. But that’s up to the individual. Like the pain of working out is very rewarding after the fact so you might keep doing it. I think antinatalists could disagree on what amount of suffering makes life worth continuing to exist. Like some people posit a utopian future where there is virtually no suffering. But how many generations are going to have to suffer to get there? So for us, even if that was achievable (which I really don’t think it is) it wouldn’t be worth all the sacrificed lives. Also there’s gradations of amounts of suffering that can be seen in life. Like slaves or Jews in the holocaust, they suffered way more than I ever will and yet continued to want to live and didn’t just commit mass suicide. If I was ever put in their position, I’d have killed myself extremely fast. So there are gradations in suffering that individuals are willing to put themselves through. But as an antinatalist, I don’t think we have a right to force that decision onto someone else by making them exist. I think the difference between non existence not experiencing pleasure and non existence not experiencing pain, is that in order to exist, pain is an objective truth. You can have pain without pleasure, but you can’t have pleasure without pain. You can of course hope there will be more pleasure than pain, but looking at how fast and horrible lives can end up, I think it’s fair to say some lives are just extremely worse than others. With virtually pure pain and just the concept of pleasure to contrast that with. Like babies born with horrible birth defects that die after months. Or ones that are born into slavery or experience horrible sexual abuse. So I don’t think the absence of pain or pleasure has to be good for that person specifically, because if they don’t exist they can’t experience either. But I think not having pain just being in the world is a good thing. Like if I could snap my fingers and end some horrible suffering overseas that has no effect on my life and that I didn’t even know about, I’d say I have a moral obligation to do so. Just for the fact of having less suffering in the world. So I think the absence of pain takes more of a priority of the presence of pleasure, since to get either, you have to exist with pain. So the absence of pain is only bad in those who are alive already to not experience it. Yes, I suppose natalists could use that argument to try and reproduce more. But I think it would be missing the point. Because there’s no guarantee that the child you have is going to perceive or experience the world in the same way you do. They could have a better life than you, or they could also have a far far worse one. So that risk seems highly unethical. Especially when it’s a risk that you don’t even have to take part in. It’s ok asking so many questions ☺️ I appreciate the pushback. (Also the RUclips comments can sometimes be glitchy so if a reply doesn’t show up you can email me at the channels email if you want to keep talking).

      @@thesolipsistcinema Well, I appreaciate the detailed and well-thought response, so thank you very much (and I'll keep the email in mind). The example of the possibility of a future utopia actually reminded me of something specific, which does lead to another question. Does antinatalism have a goal, or does that depend on the antinatalist also? Is there a hope/aim to convincing others to not reproduce in the hope humanity stops reproducing to end human suffering altogether, or does that fall in line more so with antinatalist who are specifically advocates as opposed to the philosophy in and of itself? Part of asking is to understand just how individualized antinatalism is, and because - well - I may have more questions depending on the answer.

    • @thesolipsistcinema
      @thesolipsistcinema 7 дней назад

      @jasmineteutsh9043 I think the “goal” is more individualized. From every antinatalist I’ve seen, we all know the world isn’t going to end by a purposeful end to procreation. It’s too natural to the biological and evolutionary urges we have and that are so societally excepted. We know humanity will continue to exist. We just want more effort done to help those already here, and don’t want to contribute to EVEN MORE suffering. The channel Stop Having Kids goes in the street and holds signs spreading awareness about antinatalism. So if we convince people, it’s helpful in small ways, but unfortunately a lot of the good it will do won’t be seen if the good is only coming from people not existing. So that’s why there’s an effort to help existing life more, not just not procreate. Feel free to ask whatever you want.

    I came across this video while doing research for a video essay of my own and I think this a very good video that really gives the subject the brevity it needs. I've always thought pedophiles are people with a problem, child molesters are criminals, but that nuance tends to get lost on a lot of people due to strong emotional responses. I'm actually impressed you covered this topic without ever bringing up lolita. I personally want to do a video essay on that novel/film, but doing so feels like stepping on a cancel culture landmine that I don't know if I'm brave enough to conquer quite yet, so bravo for you having the balls to put your views out there despite how unpopular they are. One thing you never really explored is the use of smut, websites like Ao3, juicy secrets club and more may not give pedophiles the physical release they may crave, but I think it could definitely capture the mind and prevent actual harm. And as far as visual material how do you feel about websites like pervertparadise .net which aims to sever these people with legal content with the goal of harm reduction ? I think this is a complex issue that likely has more than one single, simple solution and I commend you for starting the conversation from a place of empathy rather than rage. good job

    ironically if they both chilled out just a little bit and came to a compromise they really could have done some good for the city. there are some people for whom rehabilitation is possible, given the opportunity and aid to do so. But on the other hand there are people in the world who are a blight upon it and are never going to change their ways, though either a warped idea of morality or simple greed. for the second catagory, if they are violent or worse their simple continued life is a risk for those who interact with them. by accepting these things and talking them over case by case Frank and Matt could, between them tone down Franks shotgun approach to dealing out punishment, but also actually stop repeat dangerous criminals.

      @mattcooperkay Thank you bro! I try to make the topics I talk about accessible to those unfamiliar, and interesting and in depth for those that have heard of them as well. Thanks for the encouragement and I have some interesting things in the works!

    I died in my sleep. It was wonderful, accepting and peaceful. The worst part was waking up, re-imprisoned in this world. The depression of being back here... I want vengeance on the god monster.

    I still don't understand why antinatalists keep relying on the existence of procreated humans when procreation is unethical. Antinatalists should live alone in the wild (doing all of their own work) when they don't want humans to procreate!
