Tom Bowen Owen Biddle Jr., building of the Arch Street Meeting House and other Philadelphia Biddles.
We will explore how builder Owen Biddle, Jr. (1774-1806) had deep Quaker roots as the great-great-grandson of an early important settler of Quaker New Jersey who was also an associate of William Penn. Although he died at a young age, Owen made an impact in the development of 19th century Philadelphia, not only in the building of the Arch Street Meeting House, but as a master carpenter helping to shape the future city of Philadelphia.
We will also see how the rest of the Biddle family, from Nicholas Biddle of Andalusia in Bucks County, the banker who opposed President Andrew Jackson, to Francis Biddle, who served as Attorney General under President Franklin Roosevelt, made their mark in Ame...

Anthony Benezet was arguably the most influential voice for abolition in the U.S. and Britain in the 18th century and a pioneer in equal education for women and blacks. And his writings and actions were firmly grounded in his Quaker faith, as demonstrated by this quote: "If we continually bear in mind the royal law of doing to others as we would be done by, we shall never think of bereaving our...

As noted by George Fox, William Penn and more recently Liz Nicholson, Quakers are colonizers, ie, we took & take other peoples’ land for our national selves. The USA claims to have begun “the great drama of the decolonization of this continent” in 1775, but from England, never aknowledging that USA simply extended England’s colonial empire onto the original people & territory of Turtle Island. ...

The horrific events and war crimes committed by both Hamas in southern Israel and the State of Israel in Gaza and the West Bank since October 7, 2023 have sent shock waves of anguish, anger, and sorrow throughout the world. Yet, while we need to address the immediate crisis, we also need to address the underlying causes of this conflict. Last June, a small US Quaker delegation, led by North Car...

My hat's off to you for handling the Siberian-American question (and a few other questions too) so tenderly. Should everybody on the planet call themselves African since all humans originally came from Africa? That's silly because it happened so long ago that people around the planet have evolved to look distinct and speak completely different languages. (Ever compare German and Spanish?) There are no indigenous cultures in the Americas I know of who speak a Siberian language or even a dialect of that language and I don't know of any Native cultures whose origin myth talks about migration. That doesn't mean it didn't happen but it gives you an idea of how long ago it was.

In general the terms for "American Indians," "Native Americans," "Indigenous" have come from white people. The rest of us don't really care, except for the nasty terms ("redskins," "squaws," etc. ) We identify with our tribes. Chickasaws (mine) are as different from Apaches as French are from Bulgarians (or English from Irish). My Chickasaw newspaper in its articles interchanges American Indians, Native Americans, and Indians....very occasionally indigenous.

Excellent discussion of current US gun laws and comparison with world standards. . Where are guns in the US manufactured? Maybe the solution is to address this issue in a fashion similar to the cigarette litigation and sue the US manufacturer for deaths resulting from guns, specifically assault weapons. Once they are required to pay millions for deaths related to inherently dangerous products they may act to make their product safer.

Thank you for your email and question. My advice is rather than flounder as a single voice opposing gun violence, consult and support a responsible non-profit organization with that purpose. The one that comes to my mind is the Gifford Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, founded by Gabby Giffords, the member of Congress who was seriously wounded by a shooter, and which has been run by her and her husband Mark Giffords.
