Hello Barrie,1 / I have just been watching this video for a second time, and I notice that both of your pantographs appear to have an additional brass (conducting ? ) wire running from the pantograph into the plastic roof. So, has your model been modified, or partially modified to collect current from the pantograph ? And if so, how is the changeover switch arranged please ? 2 / Subsequent to your first broadcast of this video, I have had the opportunity to view this model up close. The one I have inspected has each pantograph secured by a brass bolt and nut, so it would be possible to run a strip of phosphor bronze strip, being secured onto to holding bolt with an additional nut, and then soldering a wire near the mid point (avoiding the body securing bolt ! ) to enable a connection to a change over switch attached to the central body weight with cast metal air tanks, which would allow for an option of overhead collection. If this modification was done, I suggest that the phosphor bronze strip and its attachment points to the pantographs be covered with a strip of paper based masking tape, to prevent any possibility of the prosper bronze strip touching, and thereby shorting out due to contact with the metal bogie tops. 3 / I am under the impression that Hornby Acho did not make provision for overhead collection, however, your model displayed above may either have been modified, or perhaps it is a latter production version which did provide for overhead collection. 4 / By the way, your running HA models have out lasted the in service prototypes ! 5 / you make very informative videos, and I have learnt a lot fro your videos, as I am sure have others have, and we have gone on from pure entertainment to being informed, probably without even realising it. 6 / best wishes, and regards to you and your family, from a retired signalman in Australia.

Hello Barrie, another excellent, and interesting video.Quite some years back, I had read that the DDR/Deutche Democratic Republic/East Germany retained the name DR/Deutches Reichsbahn due to arrangements made by the Four Powers Occupation Government (UK/USA/USSR/France) relating to cross zonal railway access and interchange. Both the DB and DR also unofficially co-ordinated their rolling stock classification and numbers (including motive power) to accomodate eventual amalgamation. In the interim, DB, and then DR, went over to computerised numbering, where the last digit is a check digit (which is a sensible idea of itself ! ). Also, about a year before the Berlin Wall came down, West Germany/Bundes Republic Deutchland/Federal Republic of Germany concluded that reunification was unlikely to happen for quite some time, so they started to plan on making Bonn the Permanent, as opposed Interim, Capital, then everything changed ! Great video Barrie, trusting you and the family are keeping well, Best regards from Australia.

Barrie from what little knowledge i have this Class P 10 / 39 loco appears to be a Deutsch Reichsbahn Gesellschaft one . German Railways up to 1945 . I am not sure about the livery of this one but it does bear a slight resemblance to the Prussian State Railways Green . After 1922 there were a total of 260 locomotives delivered to the DR . Their main duties were for passenger and express trains operating in the foothills of mountain areas . They weighed about 162 tons and could travel forwards at around 110 km/h and backwards at 50 km / h . I hope this is of some help to you . If i am wrong i am sure someone will correct me .

That Hornby Nelson looks lovely and like my hornby Arthur, that's got a very detailed cab like your loco. And I agree those Wrenn pullmans are nice ,I've only got one but its a great runner behind behind my locos , and I used to long ago help restore a Brighton belle car that's now back with the VSOE company.and also helped save a rare original 6 wheel pullman car called Balmoral that had been used as part of a bungalow extension after it had been taken out of service way back in the early 1900s and thought lost but now being restored by at the Bolton & Embasy railway, I've got a real interest in pullman cars and their history.

Hornby new tooling terrier I think the D16/1 is a nicer looking engine than the D49 Only one Schools class loco was shown to the school it was named after. One ended up having to change its name.

And you managed to find one of the rare ones... A Br39 in the photo grey version of the last Prussian state railways scheme (without the imperial eagle roundel) The color scheme is meant to better show the engineering details. After the first time washing the grey parts get their actual color, as the white paint is a chalk wash...

Dear Barrie, this is an excellent video, well done. I really like the way you used the turntable to closely examine the DRG/DB/DR 2-8-2 Cl 41 tender locomotive, and the livery of photographic grey shows well the very American look of this particular locomotive. Being one of the two prototypes, 41.001 or 41.002, both of which were coupled to 2'2'T32 tenders to suit 20 metre / 65'7'' turntables. The tender is also very American looking with its equalised 4w bogies, to its insert coal bunker. This is a very interesting, and informative video, thank you. Best wishes and regards from Australia.

Although my Top 5 would be different to yours, it's a joy to hear you speak with such positivity and pride about your locos, and how they bring you happiness. My current Top 5 would be: 1) Hornby (Railways) Tornado in early BR Green, 2) A brace of Lima class 20s in early BR diesel livery, 3) Hornby A1 Lemberg in Wartime Black, 4) Bachmann Robinson 04 in late BR Black, 5) Dapol class 52 in Maroon. BTW, DC Kits have a new Hornby 4F (44341) for sale for £65.

In my collection of railway dvd's ther is one of a driver on a preserved line driving the train from an auto coach and he explained about how much more effort was needed in using the controls in the auto coach due all the mechanical linkages and rods going back to the engine. The driver said you really had to swing on the regulator handle to start the train.

Hi Barrie! It’s so great to see you again! I subscribed to your previous channel; I’m happy to see all is well. You may not remember me, but I was the girl that was getting into model trains through my fiancé playing your videos during dinner! I have thoroughly been convinced since then, and in half a year we have joined our local model train chapter (for HO scale) and have officially 8 locos! I have also since learned about all the major couplers (was a huge embarrassment when we bought stock that couldn’t match our only loco at the time). I have a question: Why are so many hobbyists interested in buying new only, and have minimal understanding for upkeep or repairs? The chapter we’re in, while the gentlemen are great, they really do not like used locos. Is it just a culture thing here across the pond, or is it fundamentally how the hobby is suppose to be? Many locos we’ve tried to fix do not look like they were designed to ever be opened or maintained…

Fortunately in 2019 I managed to sauce an ‘O’ gauge new version by LENZ, DCC Sound fitted with 30 functions that included a smoke generator at a cost of just over £1100. This Class also had a nick name “BLACK BUFFALO “. An absolute brilliant model and as you said “you only get what you pay for “. A great Video Barry, regards from Ron. 🚂🚂👍

Hi Barrie, another interesting video. 1 / The SNCF BB16000 25kvAC were built between 1958-1963, and the last one was retired in 2012. The BR AL1/ Cl 81 (BTH/AEI) were built between 1959-1964, and with the last one being retired in 1990; so both classes were contemporaries. 2 / the SNCF BB 16000 were derived from the outwardly identical BB 9200 1,500vDC of 1958-1964, with the last one being withdrawn in 2014. 3 / Re the red Lima locomotive you mentioned, 6 locomotives of the BB 9200 class were modified for the Paris-Toulouse High Speed 1,500vDC "Capitole" service, and these locomotives were indeed dark red, and known as the BB Rouge / Red locomotives, and included permanently mounted ":Capitole" headboards, with BB 9291 preserved as such at Mulhouse Railway Museum. 4 / As you say, the engineering and design of the Hornby Acho BB 16000 is superb, and is significantly better than either the Hornby Dublo, cat2245 (2rail) / 3245 (3rail), E3002 or later (and different ! ) TriAng Hornby R753 E3001. Electrically, and mechanically, the R753 is inferior to the Dublo original (and a lot cheaper to make ! ), yet the British model AL1s both have an overhead change over switch to enable the pantograph to collect power, yet the Hornby Acho BB 16000 does not appear to have this provision 5 / By the way, the owner of both Roco and Fleischmann brands has decided that Fleischmann, as from 2019, shall concentrate on N Piccolo brand, and Roco will incorporate Fleischmann HO into the Roco brand, and Roco will be available as Roco HO and Roco TT, Best wishes and regards from Australia.

Hi Barrie, 1 / re the Tender Cabin on DB and OBB (Austrian Federal Railways) 2-10-0s, according to Trains Illustrated Annual, 1962 p77, in 1955, DB / Detaches Bundesbahn / German Federal Railways, had 10 cabins built on the rear of some Class 50 engines, which as Ivovanzon164 indicated below were not a success, but from the beginning of 1959, 491 tenders were equipped with Centre of Tender Guards Cabins, (no provision for driver controls) and are usually coupled to Class 41 ( 2 cyl 2-8-2) & 44 ( 3 cyl, heavy 2-10-0) oil burning locomotives . The tender was extended to the buffer beam to offset the loss of water space. The Guard's Cabin is equipped with a folding seat, a table the full width of the cab, folding wash basin, two steam heated radiators, two bookshelves, two Emergency Brake Handles (one inner & one outer) . The German cabin is 6'6" long x 4'6" wide x 7'2" high in the centre. The provision of Tender Guard's Cabins was to overcome a shortage of Guard's Vans. 2 / I understand that DB abolished the need for Guard's Vans on the rear of trains in 1955, due to all rolling stock then in service being equipped with air brakes. 3 / Your query re Disc Wheels is that they are a mono bloc steel casting without a seperate tyre, therefore they are less prone to metal fatigue, and if the steam locomotives so equipped were modified for a higher speed, then mono bloc steel disc wheels would make sense. 4 / with reference to "The German Class 52 Kreigslok", Peter Slaughter, Alexander Vassiliev, Roland Beier (Frank Stenvalls Forlag, 1996 isbn 91-7266-140-2) p7, Design simplification included the use of disc type pony wheels in lieu of standard spoked wheel, and K2'2'T32"Wannen" tub tenders. 5 / The Cl 52 Kreigslok / War Locomotive was derived from the DRG/DB Cl 50 2cyl 2-10-0, with the wartime Interim Austerity design classifies as Cl 50 UK / Ubergang zur Kreigslok / Transitional War Locomotives (their numberplates were 50UK.xxx), all of which were designed with a 15 tonne axle load, and to travel at 80kph either forwards and backward. 6 / the OBB 2-10-0s with Tender Cabins were Class 52 kreigsloks equipped with converted Wannen bathtub tenders. 6 / another very enjoyable video Barrie, trusting you and your family are well, Best wishes and regards from Australia.
