St. Philip Street is named after the St. Philip School for boys, which was originally supposed to be named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis. But the name was changed to St. Philip School for boys after the Civil War.

Ursulines Avenue was named after the Ursuline nuns. When the Spanish took over the street was changed to Calle del Arsenal because troops were quartered in the city. When New Orleans was sold to the United States in 1803 the street name was reverted to Ursulines Avenue.

Governor Nicholls Street is named after Francis T. Nicholls. He was a Confederate General and a Louisiana Governor. Maps from the mid to late 1700’s show the street name as Rue de l’Arsenal because an arsenal was on this street at one point. Maps also show a hospital was on this street near the river. Barracks Street is named after the barracks where soldiers were stationed. The U.S. Barracks name was later changed to Jackson Barracks. Barracks Street is mainly a residential street. Lots of wonderful houses!! Great street for photographers!! Enjoy!!!

Chartres Street is named after the Chartres prefecture in the Centre-Val de Loire regions of France. There are numerous homes, shops and restaurants. It also runs right in front of the St. Louis Cathedral and the backside of Jackson Square. I lived on Chartres Street and I loved it there!! Enjoy!!!!
