I knew I remembered Jitney Jungle in Corpus, but no history I’ve found admits they were in south Texas. I’d long forgotten Biel’s. That crazy roof at Lew Williams Chevrolet. I still remember looking at 1970 Challengers at Creveling Dodge.

My mother worked at Swantner & Gordon before I was born. She shopped at that Handy Andy when I was a kid. We spent a day in Corpus, probably 20 years ago. I couldn’t believe that Hamlin Drug had the same booths with the same Formica and the same upholstery I remembered from around 1965.

I’d say the “areal” view at 1:11 was taken after Celia. Too many vacant lots for the 60s. It’s “aerial,” by the way. Not areal or arial. (I learned that in Corpus Christi ISD.)

Most of that Woolco roof collapsed during hurricane Celia in 1970. Panchos was all the rage when it opened. Yes, the best sopapillas. My parents took older friends there for the first time. There was a sign warning about the hot plates. My dad pointed it out to the lady, saying, “Look out. Don’t burn yourself.” She immediately grabbed a plate and you could hear her thumb sizzle. 🙄 I can’t remember where it was. Seems like it was up around Ayers, but that part of town was in decline by the late 60s. Who remembers the building on the waterfront (a bank) that lit its windows as a Christmas tree and candles. It’s pictured in the video but I don’t recall its name. On a perfectly still night it reflected in the water when seen from one of the T-heads.

Does anyone remember the ice cream shop that was shaped like a huge ice cream cone? It was either there or Padre Island, but my parents took my brother and I there during the 1970s and I first saw it from the backseat of the car!! It was the holy grail of ice cream shops for a kid!! Of course we had to stop!!🍦🍦🍦

Interesting video of Corpus Christi on 1st half concentrating on the 1970 damage that hurricane Celia inflicted. I think your video would have been superior if instead of playing that 1977-1978 disco song Burn Baby Burn by The Tramps that you would have played an earlier 1970 song like Green Eyed Lady by Sugarloaf or Mama Told Me Not To Come by 3 Dog Night.

Back in the late-late 60s ,as a young teen,i was introduced to this wonderful city, and i got my first taste of the American life,by a young lady( Mary Ann) and her friend (Vergie)-and i was mesmerized by how much there was to enjoy in America. Living in another state now,i can surely say that,Corpus Christi was one of the reasons that i immigrated to America.Unfortunately change is inevitable ,but memories are constant . I am planing to visit again,i hope i will see something positive in all the changes.

That was great, if only we had time machines. My brother & I use to go down town. He built me a soapbox little car it was like 3 ft wide & maybe 4ft long with a set of two skateboard trucks in the back, in the front it had 2 platforms from roller skates on each end of a 2x4. It had a rope nailed to each end of the 2x4 & you steered it like a horse. It had like two ski poles on the back & a place to stand, he would push me all over the place in down town Corpus, the T heads, Cole park. Good times. It made me cry while watching it. We lived on 12th street across the street from Tony Bologni's. We were very poor. My mom did"t even have money for power we ran an extension cord from the next door neighbor's. My mom cooked in an electric skillet & we has a electric crock pot. We ate sweet rice with powdered milk in it, in the mornings, & beans & Spanish rice with homemade tortillas, & koolaid in the evening. I remember the winter of 1976 I was 5 yrs old & it was very cold. My grandmother bought us a little heater with a small propane tank to stay warm. Most kids have no idea how good they have today.
