Happy Friday! I have the day off work today, and I have been spending it by packing away Christmas. That makes me a bit melancholic, but I have plans to get some flowers this weekend to brighten things up. Hi all! I usually post once a week, but I had today off work and I decided to film a little catchup:) I really want to make myself a coat, and I know what pattern I want to make, but it is a Burda pattern, and the instructions.. well, they are pretty sparse. Do you know an indie pattern with the same silhouette as the Burda 6845? I managed to sew up the Sew house 7 Tabor V-neck this afternoon, ...

Hi Karen Marie! I'm getting to your video much later than I wanted, but such a worthwhile one. The light from the fire is very flattering. I couldn't hear a thing. I share your dread about swimsuit shopping and love of swimming. Since we're both long torsoed, we need to make ourselves tankinis that cover what we want/need covered and make us feel better than ready to wear. I hope you found something in the shops (I'm pretty surprised to hear that that was even a possibility given your weather.) that will do for your upcoming trip to the Canary Islands. (I so hope you share video/photos from your trip!) Your coat is amazing! So good! Have a good week and I'll check out the other Rachael's channel on your recommendation. Take care!

I am really enjoying watching your RUclips channel. I love the coat you are sewing, and looking forward to seeing the end result, you will feel such a sense of achievement. I haven’t been sewing that long but last summer I ‘had a go!’ at sewing swimwear. The coat is looking amazing! The lining is a great compliment to the main fabric. I used a Styla pattern to make my first swimsuit last summer and I was surprised by how easy it was. I also found the fit to be better than anything I’ve ever bought. It might mentally be too big of a project to tackle before your holiday, but it’s definitely worth giving a go in the future.

Hello Karen marie. Lovely to see you and it's always fun! Love seeing what others are up to on the other side of the world. You're not alone in your feelings about swim wear. I wear usually involves a pair of board shorts over the bottom half of a tankini (top half of the tankini is on show!). I had my last pair for about 15 years (that's how often I go swimming!). Coat looks amazing on you! You're clever. And it's only you who will ever see any mistakes. If anyone else ever said anything then they are standing too close! Love the lining. I have almost finished my first ever pair of pants. They are the Pattern Emporium Walk boldly pants. High waisted wide legged from Ponte. They are not perfect at all but I finally made a pair of pants and I will wear them with pride. I will also look into the pattern designer you mentioned as I am pear shaped (20cm difference between waist and hips 😱). Have a great sewing week and can't wait to see the finished coat.

The lining fabric goes very nicely with the coat, a clapper is good for making seams behave well. Keep up the good work. I also have a big difference between waist and hips, I think it is probably a common problem.

Your coat is coming along! I did make a swimsuit, way back in the 1970’s when I was a teen in high school! It was a Vogue pattern, one piece with ruching down the front that was very flattering. I was a competitive swimmer in high school, so all my other swimsuits were workout, not glamorous types and I wanted a suit that was a bit showy to lounge around the public pool in. I think I was naive going into it. I don’t remember thinking it would be a hard thing at all. Gortex or swimsuit fabric was new. My mom, who taught me to sew but had passed away several years before this swimsuit, would not let me even think about Vogue patterns and did not like them. So, it felt slightly like I was going against her, but I went ahead. I really didn’t have the skills for such a different type of garment but I did it! I wore it nearly daily the summer I was 17. I think it boosted my sewing confidence.

I also have the same struggle with trousers, being a size smaller waist to my hip size. I usually lengthen the crotch as well as I don't like low waistlines. I made the Coco Pants by Pattern Emporium and they are a wide leg but not too wide, and you can add elastic around the waist or add a yoga waistband which is what I did and they are very comfortable. I should have gone down a size but they are still OK. I'm currently trying to get a coat finished, and it's only a toile, but I can see the finish line now! The coat I'm making has a video for the back vent so I'm hoping I can manage it. I have fabric for swimwear but haven't tackled it yet. I prefer a two piece tankini style and the pattern I have in mind is the Love Notions Clearwater Swim Set, and I will be making the tank top and shorts - eventually!

I love tailoring, it gives you a great finih garment and really stron one. As far as marking the reams allowances, you could run a long slip stich in a very brig color the cut or I love using a bring water color (yes water color pencil from an art store) and dip it a dap of water and mark it. The marking will last until your garment is done and at the end run a damp cloth over the markings and they are gone. Stay away from red since it's a very deep color and more difficult to erase. Just found your channel - it appeared in the RUclips thumbnails as I follow a few sewing vlogs (and I have just started adding a few videos to my channel to join the party!). I made the Southbank in a French terry-type fabric, but it was the top not the dress, and it has a fleece back, not looped, but I think it would have been fine as the dress. Certainly nice and cosy. I have discovered that all French terrys are not equal - some are thinner than others. I'm going through a coat crisis at the moment! I have some expensive wool that I have not yet had the courage to cut into, and I have changed plans (twice!) on which coat I'm going to make (I made one and then decided I wasn't very keen on the design but I will wear it), so I am just in the process of making a toile using some very cheap fabric, but this has been on my table since the middle of December! Procrastination? Fear? I did have some issues with the instructions for the second coat I had wanted to make, so that is why I am on coat trial three! Coat number three has a back vent so that will be a challenge I've not had before. It's the Atelier Jupe Alex Coat. What a pain with the seam allowances! And the printing all seven pages is not good. I have had patterns like that, but I have also had some with cup sizes and each cup size was a separate page, or two pages, so you didn't have to print all the pattern pieces.

@@Yorkygirl59 Hi there, Diane! Thanks for watching ❤️. Yes, I have had that experience with french terry, too. But I think I’ll go ahead with the Southbank with this fabric. I think I’ll just lengthen it and leave off the hem band to let the dress hang looser. I think that’ll work :) Oh, I hear you about coats. I had to take a deep breath before cutting into the fabric 😅. I have the Atelier Jupe Alex coat pattern, too, but I never got around to making it. Maybe if I can work out this coat that I am making now, I’ll have the courage to start? 😊

I’m with you on the Christmas decorations thinking - the house looks so naked without them! I feel your pain about the awful Burda pattern instructions, as my first sewing make was a tunic pattern with a V-neck by Burda and it nearly drove me astray in the head! My sewing buddies in the class were probably fed up listening to me moaning about it! I never wore it and it now languishes in a dark cupboard until I can bear to look at it again and cut it up for scraps ☹️. Good luck with the coat(s). X

I’m really intrigued by your comments on the Stella dress - I’m very nervous of drawstring waist as my fear is that the fabric will shift around in wear and just be annoyingly bulky - but it sounds like I may be worrying unnecessarily? My guess is though that the fabric choice is important - the samples shown on the site look like crepe de chine or similar. What fabric did you use? Btw, love your blogs!,, 😊
