Estimated cost of the El Niño - La Niña was around 290 bn KES (2.9 bn USD), at the time about 14% of Kenya's GDP. Would the recent floods in April 2024 cost the same, more, or less???

    It all makes sense now.... i remember years ago when Prince Harry stayed at Lewa conservancy until he was bursted by "paparazzi" - the connections are there. I would love to believe that some of these "conservation pioneers" really love animals and intend to protect them but we all know there is always more to the story. History has taught us that foreignors' intentions are not always pure but neither are our politicians'. As for the charlatan😄😁It was funny but sad at the same time. I mean why do we need to bring in a charlatan and waste all that money providing for him special treatment when we already have enough charlatans of our own. Reparation is a nice idea but it would never help us because we are too corrupt to handle money matters - be it financial aid, public funds, reparation. Overall, great discussion; very informational.

      Many Premiers and government leaders too have frequented the place. I guess it's a place dear to their hearts, foreign policy etc. Or maybe it just reflects the fact that most of the settlers who came to Kenya after the collapse of IBEACO were from the aristocracy class back home. Barons and Lords etc. And we know these connections sometimes last centuries. Heard somewhere that Lord Errol's family (White Mischief) have been walking behind the royals during coronations since the 1300s. So i guess 124 years after the establishment ofthe Kenya colony is rather short in comparison...

    Arguments for Africa reparations are the same pointless, feckless arguments for African-American reparations. Arguments for reparations are indirect confessions of failures. Are the arguments for reparations just covert requests for re-colonization? The word "reparations" is just a buzzword for "Charity", "Aid", "Welfare", "Handout". After decades of Charity, Aid, Welfare, Handout and still being stuck in the muck, the beggars are too ashamed to ask for more and more Welfare so they are now begging for REPARATIONS. All groups (racial or not) have enslaved other groups (racial or not). The word "slave" comes from the Slavic people who were enslaved by Roman and Muslim empires. And empires in between. Should the people of Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia sue Italy, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia (birthplace of Islam) for reparations? Or is this just a Black-White issue? Reparations are paid by the Loser to the Winner. Yes, Germany paid reparations after WW1 and WW2. Germany made its final payment for World War I reparations on October 3, 2010. Unlike World War I reparations, there was no specific endpoint for World War II reparations. Instead, Germany made payments over several decades, primarily to individual victims of Nazi persecution and to the State of Israel for Holocaust reparations. Reparations are paid by the Loser to the Winner. It is common for the Loser of a law suit to pay the legal expenses (reparations!!!) of the Winning party. This is so because the Winning party is still (after the first legal battle) a legal threat (to win again) to the Losing party. On the Africa-Europe issue, the former African colonies are on the Loser side for it is pleading from weakness, not from strength. The Winner can demand reparations from the Loser because Strength is on the side of the Winner. It is not Personal. It is just Business. Can the ex-African colonies make an offer that the Western Powers cannot refuse? Africa depends much more on the Western Powers than the other way around. Deny raw materials? Raw materials can be found outside Africa. Africa cannot produce the machinery needed in a Modern Economy. But, but, but the ex-colonies are WINNERS in International Court!!! So what. The Court of country X is backed by the force of the Police; said Police can enforce the judgements of the Court. The International Court has no Police. Judgements of the International Court has no punch thus no practical value. Morality for morality's sake is stupid. The purpose of morality is the survival of Society to the next generation. In the animal world there are parasitic species. In the world of Nations, are the ex-colonies begging for reparations implicitly asking to become the parasites? Which Nation want to become hosts to parasites? Which Nation want to subsidize parasites? But, but, but what about the reparations Haiti paid to France? Haiti was the WINNER in 1804!!! Really? Usually after a war, the Winner is still a threat to the Loser. In 1804, Haiti was not a threat to France (Haiti had no Navy) but France was still a threat to Haiti. Haiti was at best a Pyrrhic Winner. For more than 200 years, Haiti has been losing the Peace. France, being still a threat to Haiti, was in the position to demand, from Strength, reparations. By the way, France got its reparations on the third attempt. Nations go through life cycles like humans. A cohort of Leaders remain such for about 60 years. The USA went through a mid-life crisis at the 84th year (1860 -1776) with the Civil War; the USA survived that crisis. The USSR went through a mid-life crisis at the 72th year (1989 -1917); the USSR did not survive the crisis. The PRC went through a crisis at the 34th year (1982 -1948) with the switch to the Capitalist Economic model; however Deng Tsiao Ping was a contemporary of Mao Tse Dong. Many African colonies gained their Independence in the early 1960's. 60 years have passed (2020 -1960). The original African Leaders have passed on. The current set of African Leaders have to reflect hard on the correctness of their predecessors' initiatives. This current demand for "reparations" is as incorrect as their predecessors' love for Socialism.

    • @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast
      @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast 23 дня назад

      I get your point about the dichotomy of war, winners and losers informing reparations. However, are u diasgreeing with the principle itself? That damage was caused and a form of repair is necessary? Whether it will ever come or not... There are those who argue that at least it makes known the fact that American wealth for instance was largely built through free, abundant slave labour. Or that the wealth of selected European countries was built out of slaver trade, plantation capitalism in the Carribean and Latin America, Imperialism and Colonialism in Africa. This is because they are rising voices today that still peddle the argument that the wealth in the West largely resulted out of Democracy, Elightenment Philosophical values, hard work, inventors, patent laws and private property. All of which did play a role, but one that allowed the capital for the above to thrive is avoided or brushed under the carpet. Hence reparation debates, whether in the US or Africa, however pointless and feckless, serves to keep this ugly truth of modern history alive.

    Great discussion. I wonder what the British intention was/is with CBC. Growing up, i endured a learning environment flooded with fallacy because of teachers who lacked critical thinking skills. This was for both Primary and High school. Apart from teachers, I often wonder why the education system in Kenya or some african countries often produce many graduates with poor critical thinking skills. I'm not saying that the system doesnot produce intellectuals because that would not be true but the majority are not great thinkers despite being highly educated. I have never really understood why that happens and honestly, i dont know if CBC will produce a better outcome or even if that's the objective at all.

      The intention is to dumb us down

    • @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast
      @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast 26 дней назад

      Certainly a valid observation. It could be that the Education system churns out capable graduates alright. But once graduated, the economy doesnt have lots of high quality jobs to go around. Most of those graduates quicly realise that 1, they have to leave the country, or, 2, they try their luck with MNCs/big NGOs, or 3, go after money without caring about morals or applying critical thinking. With such limited options, even basic critical thinking imparted during uni/college quickly goes down the drain if u dont get the chance to go abroad and also dont get a well paying job with a foreign company. As to the intentions of the CBC, the point Mutemi made is that it's a very noble initiative that has however been hijacked. Can the course be corrected? No clue.

      @Annakelly-zg8qz All you need to do is look back to Kibaki Era. We lived within our means and funded 95% of the budget through taxes without increasing taxes. Kibaki expanded the tax base and productivity. During his time, Kenya still used to lose 300 billion a year to corruption. During Uhuru's time, that rose to 600 billion. The SGR cost was quoted at 320 billion which means we could have built it from taxes. It ended up costing 800+ billion according to Senator Omtatah... Wizi! I wonder how much we are losing now, but this shows we can fund our programmes without borrowing.

    Kenya should have done more to the Agricultural sector, especially in Tea and Coffee production. Kenyan tea and coffee is recognized worldwide and i remember about 18 years ago i could buy Kenyan tea and coffee in most cities in Canada. For example, 7-11 had Kenyan coffee, Superstore had Kenyan tea, among others. Nowadays, Kenyan tea is mostly mixed with other teas from other parts of the world and sold as a different brand as in the case of Lipton. We allowed ourselves to be diluted in the market. The problem is that everytime the government gets involved in Agriculture there is always a huge scandal tied to corrupt individuals.

    • @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast
      @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast Месяц назад

      Quite true. There are so many vested interests in the Kenyan agriculture sector. And what u r describing, blended products, have ensured that the value chain has left Kenya and gone abroad to Europe, North America and even Asia. With the value chain leaving, so are jobs, as well as higher to average returns for local farmers. The corruption and agri-cartels certainly don't help at all.

    This is a good discussion. It’s interesting that Russia is doing just fine without SWIFT, isn’t it? Thanks to their trading partners. Considering the dictatorship claims of leaders whose countries are still buying Russian oil in large quantities, it’s probably more than just the price of oil.

    • @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast
      @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast Месяц назад

      It sure is. The war economy is certainly helping, war is big business, ever since WW2. Besides , eventhough the oil and natgas are being bought by China and India as two big partners, they are still trading indirectly with many western countries thru re-exporting. Germn car exports to Kazakhstan surged by over 1000% in 2023 compared to pre-Ukraine War period. Everyone knows once they reach Kazakhstan, they are then re-exported from there straight into Russia. British heavy machinery have also grown by over 1000% to Krygistan. as is with most other western exports to the other Central Asian nations - Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Same script basically.

  • @AnnaKelly-zg8qz
    @AnnaKelly-zg8qz Месяц назад

    A very informative discussion! Dedollarization has a long way to go because the use of the dollar in international markets is based on trust. United States has been relatively stable economically and politically over the years and that fuels the trust of the US dollar in the international markets. There are other currencies that are as valuable as the dollar or even more valuable in terms of exchange rates but the economic and/or political stability in the corresponding countries might be questionable thus these currencies might not command the level of trust that the dollar has.

    • @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast
      @The_Nubianommetry_Podcast Месяц назад

      That's certainly one of the main reasons. Though wiring the dollar thru the entire global financial system/building, e.g. thru the Bretton Woods institutions seems to be another reason, with reserves and loans in both instituions usually disbursed in USD. And if these institutions and Central Banks around the world put such a high premium on the USD over decades, then international traders just have to follow the cue.... And as recent as 2012 i think, only 4 currencies were used to denominate IMF reserves - USD, Euro, Yen, and the British pound. Only around then did China push so that the Renminbi got accepted as one of the reserves.

    • @yankingtv8710
      @yankingtv8710 Месяц назад

      Interesting view.... yeah, maybe as a complete system, it's doomed to fail, but sectorally and in some countries and situations, it could be viable. He was definately radical, some say idealistically extreme, he'd probably say he was ''voll und ganz klassenbewusst'' - fully class conscious. Hehe

    Great conversation covering a wide range of topics with lots of nuggets. On a lighter note, I can relate to the studying abroad part in the sense that the experience was different from what i had envisioned but overall the system there works. There were so many good points that commenting on all of them will turn into a RUclips spam. I especially found the perspective on how colonialism made kikuyus obsessed with land very interesting and that before then, land was communally owned and was considered holy. This then took my mind to other Kenyan communities, the effects of colonialism and whether we were left better off or worse off. This was a very thought provoking discussion and i’m looking forward for more.👏🏾

      Hey, thanks. Sure, i myself enjoyed the convo alot, the experience studying abroad part but also the colonialism bit, the sudden shift from communal land ownership to land as private property. And yeah, the obsession with land by Kikuyus, as Collins put it. Hit the notification button for future podcasts. :)

    The Trouble with this defence for Democracy is that. ?? The White People Still Use different forms of Tactics to influence and Control the Democratic Systems. ?? Making Most of the Leader Puppets. ?? Who Don't Care much about the Warefare of the People. But in the UK 🇬🇧 and the West. ?? The People are Taken Care of Properly. In Housing ?? Social Benifits to Vanurable Groups. ?? This same Senario is happening In Ghana and Accross Africa. What us the Use of Democracy when. The People who Voted the Government into Power are Desperately Hungry ?? And those In Government are Rich but Don't Care about the People. Wake Up Mate.

      The point i was trying to bring across here, is that from whichever angle you look at it, African leaders elected through the vote have agency! Everything cannot be blamed on outsiders. And in a capitalist system, actions such as corruption create so much economic distortions, which lead to more economic inequality and suffering for most of the African hoi polloi. Corrupt leaders partnering with corrupt foreign interests too exercabates the problem. But all the blame cannot be put on other people/outsiders ''using different forms of tactics to influence and control the democratic systems''. If whites in SA or in the West can use those democratic systems to their advantage, so can African leaders if they wanted to, to a degree, to the benefit of the African masses.

    This is a very interesting conversation. I am from the Netherlands, just like Itchy Boots. From my perspective, colonization is a dark chapter in our history. As a country, we are heavily engaged in apologizing and rectifying past wrongs. It is a significant issue in our society. However, I do believe that at some point, it must be closed. There are many people from Indonesia, Suriname, and the Antilles living in the Netherlands. Everyone is given the same opportunity. I have friends from these countries, and we see each other as equals. We do not perceive any class differences or the like. The new threat comes from Russia and China. They are now doing exactly what we did in the past. Western countries have moved past these dark practices. However, it has resulted in malevolent countries becoming increasingly powerful, which may lead to history repeating itself.

      Thanks for watching. The videos by Itchy Boots are quite interesting, also quite revealing, of parts of the same continent that I as a Kenyan have'nt been to. I get your point about blaming colonisation needing to come to an end. However, there's a benefit to such calls, especially from African leaders, they can always use this as a diversionary tactic from their own looting and pillaging of public resources and the wanton corruption. On the flipside though, u also have academics and civil society members, who argue the effects of colonialism still reverberate till today. Some will say what was reeceived was flag independence, but the fundamental basic global economic system of exploiting african resources and raw materials , even if it's with the help of domestic corrupt leaders, points to Western countries not having moved past ''these dark practices'' as you put it. And such views and convictions and views from Academia and the Civil Society keep feeding the loop with Politician's rhetoric. An infite loop thereby ensues and such arguments will be there for a long time to come. :)

    Eric ignorance helps him forget that it's always been a setup... The west is and has always set in their foreign policies to interfere and manipulate all those Nations he is talking about... Very Good critical Topic... Too much digration .... Theirs a lot African people can get educational by them understanding the full context to this

      Valid point. And yeah, people like Prince look at things from a very narrow perspective. We were covering a whole range of topics, so only dedicated a small portion to this topic. Thanks for watching though....
