Sam and Kev's Outdoor Adventures
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 9 май 2020
We are Sam and Kev and we are regular trampers in New Zealand's backcountry wilderness.
We make videos of our outdoor adventures to encourage those looking for a bit of extra information, guidance, and inspiration to get out there and experience it for yourselves. The trips we tend to do range from day hikes to multi day trips involving tracked and untracked terrain.
We tramp for the love of the outdoors and New Zealand's backcountry hut network. We are not experts, don't have all the answers or the latest equipment but we have a lot of fun and hope you enjoy the videos.

Pouākai
This tramp is magnificent. The Pouākai Circuit is is normally a two to three day tramp with stops at Holly and Pouākai Huts for the three day tramp and Pouākai Hut for the two day tramp (note that the Pouākai Hut is closed until mid 2025 which will necessitate staying in Holly Hut regardless). The tramp breaks into three sort of distinct regions - the traverse around the side of Mount Taranaki, Ahukawakawa Swamp, and the lush (sometimes muddy) forest return.
Kev started this tramp from the North Egmont visitor centre, located at the end of Egmont Road, and headed along the Razorback Track followed by the Holly Hut track. Alternatively you could start at the Kaiauai car park and head up the...

Kev continues his tramping adventure through the North Island, this time heading to the Coromandel. There are two very popular huts in the Coromandel region - the larger Pinnacles Hut and the smaller, architecturally designed Crosbies Hut - which is where Kev decided to head to. Access to Crosbies Hut can begin along one of seven trails, but on this tram Kev went up what is probably the most po...

Kev and Sam head to Wheel Creek Hut in the Maruia river catchment. The trip involved an initial drive through private land before the tramp began along a four wheel drive track. The track itself starts after crossing Wheel Creek and does not follow the route as shown on the topo map. Instead there is a route marked with orange triangles that can be followed. Although the route is marked all the...

Sam spends an enjoyable day tramping up to the Pearse Resurgence. A truely stunning river valley located near the base of Mt Arthur in the Tasman area of New Zealand. This valley is home to Whio (blue duck), a rare river duck endemic to New Zealand along with a crystal clear (and cold) river water, underwater caves and onga onga, a native nettle that packs a nasty sting. Parched!! A very appropriate name for this video. This a tramp with Sam and Kev in the heat of the New Zealand summer and during one of the most severe droughts to hit the Marlborough region in decades. Couple that with very limited water supply and it makes for a long day 1 of dehydration and a big learning experience. Day 1 - Car park up to Blairich Ridge and along to Blairich Peak then down ...

Omg those tracks up there are like main rds. Btw thanks to you guys I did Mt Curtis a few weeks back. Loved it
Tracks are certainly a lot better marked than Mt Curtis. Good to hear you loved going to Mt Curtis. We also thought it was a spectacular wee hut.
Being from Taranaki, it was great to see you up the maunga. Would love to run into you sometime out there hiking. You should try the Fanthams Peak trail next if you're still in Taranaki.
Thanks for the Fanthams Peak recommendation. I'll add it to the list for 2025 as I'll definitely be back in the Naki.
Great to see you out there again Kev. As usual informative and great photography - doubt my oatience would last as long as yours to get that "perfect" shot.
Thanks, Francis. It was a pretty spectacular view, so I didn't mind the wait.
What RUclipsrs do for a thumbnail, you’re a patient man Kev. Have you moved to the north Island or something sir?
@OutdoorsmanDave have to get the thumbnail 🤣. Yes, I moved to North Island for work.
@ Where are you based?
Hamilton area
Awesome video mate. Thank you for sharing!
All good. Thanks for the comment.
No mention of the flush loos at Rocks!
Yes an absolute rarity for huts.
Stayed in the Dun Hut a few times as a 15-year-old, and the previous Rocks Hut with its dirt floor on a slope and triple height bunks with chain mesh bunks and kapok mattresses. Trail runners seem to keep the track open these days over Little Twin. Pity you weren't 24 hours later to have that great view into the Pelorus River and Mt Richmond looming behind. These days the Rocks Hut hut book is filled up with Te Araroa people although many jump the hut on their race ahead. That's a great overnighter trip.
Thanks. I was fortunate in some ways with the bad weather that I had Rocks Hut all to myself. However it’s pretty obvious that it gets very busy with Te Araroa walkers. Next time I’d like to tent up near the lookout but after a day in the rain it was nice to have the comfort of a hut.
Spent a few days in Dun Hut when it was brand new back in the 1970s. Had a wee fireplace and a couple of bunks…firewood was boxwood…obviously flown in back then. Was a nice wee hut.
Thanks. I actually don’t think it would take too much to bring the hut back to a better condition. I guess all the attention goes to the busier Rocks Hut these days but I personally prefer the small bivs and backcountry huts.
@ Keep up the great work with your vids. Really enjoy them and very informative.
Good to see what we anticipate on our adventures. Thanks
Thanks. Always feels like there is so much gear in my pack but in weather like this it is totally worth it. A full change of dry clothes is a must!
Been an age since I've been up that way! Tracks changed a bit in 20 odd yrs
Thanks. Was a good loop but the weather made it a bit of a battle.
We will be in that area in March 2025. What boots do you recommend? Goretex or not? Vibrant sole?
Hi Neil, hope you enjoy the area. Kev and I have never had flash boots to be fair and never had any major issues. That said, I’ve recently upgraded to some Lowa boots which seem to be much better quality and robust. Just need to find them on sale. I think my Lowa boots are goretex but I don’t think this is necessary. The prob with Goretex in boots is if water gets its, it very hard for it to get out again so your boots ironically take longer to dry out. That said, this trip didn’t involve a lot wet boots from memory. Vibram sole seems to be pretty good. That’s what my current and previous boots had so would recommend.
Looks good Kev. When I'm back in NZ (from the UK) just after Christmas I'll likely head to this area - mud and all! I expect it will be pretty busy then but with tent areas I'm sure it will be fine. I've only done the one walk in this area (a very easy day walk to Pinnacles) this should be a bit more challenging.
You can add to your list along with visiting the Kaimai's
Thank you for another video Kev, I live just up the coast from Thames and Ive never been to Crosbies Clearing or the hut - very keen to do it now though. Ill probably do what Phillip did and head in from Tapu - Coroglen.
It will be a good chance for you to use that pack, Francis. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to give it a go.
My very first tramp - via the Tapu Rd end - 57 years ago!
I imagine the hut looks a bit different now, Philip.
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures lol - it was just an open clearing back then. That night it poured down memorably - only one of us who had pitched his flysheet close to the bush edge remained dry.
Yep 10 years ago there was still party's in their, good to see traditions still alive, had know idea they used to do this in ballroom back in the day, thanks
Interesting. Would have been quite the sight back in the day. Amazing cave.
Really very useful - thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great hike Lost In the Loop
Love that old school hut!!! Nicely tucked away out of the wind
Yes I am guessing that’s why they went with that location i.e. shelter from weather exposure.
Nice mission Sam. Good to see you back after enjoying your previous trip in this area. Cheers
Cheers. Always fun being out even when I lose track of where I am going for a bit.
Remember its not the destination thats important but the journey itself & the connected stories. Thanks!
Agreed. Thanks for the comment.
You’re a legend and the way you predicted the terrain ahead of you… “hopefully it will be gnarly” or did you say “hopefully it will NOT”? 🙃
Cheers Dave. Haha I said hopefully NOT too gnarly. It was a little bit rough in places to be honest but in hindsight I’m not convinced I took the best route down to the mine. Probably should have stuck to the ridge a bit more. Still feel like a novice sometimes.
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures Nah, you did well, made sensible and calm decisions under duress 👏👏👏
Thanks Sam. We did this walk recently with the kids, we took the ridge off meares and ended up walking on the terrace true left a long way down to the Mines. Probably should have taken the next ridge closer to the mine. Caution the track to the smelter from the short route back is rough on many parts and getting very overgrown in places. Awesome day out. Thanks for the idea
That hut was originally built to service an astronomy observatory that opened in 1964. You passed a small concrete pad that housed a shed for the telescope just before getting to the hut, maybe 100 m to the north, in the open where you still look down into the Roding catchment. Seems there was too much light from Richmond, and clouds, so they transferred the operation to Mt John near Tekapo after about a year.
Thanks. I did actually research that before I did the hike and I actually filmed the concrete plinth and talked about it but I removed it from the final edit as I thought I was talking too much through the video haha. I often think that about my videos but maybe I should have left this neat little bit of history in. Lesson for next time. Thanks for the comment.
Gosh, how interesting. Thanks for the story!
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures No worries, we all know you do a lot of work with these videos, both before you shoot and after. However, it's a pretty strange place for a hut, like Asbestos Cottage. We don't mind some story and you generally do make it interesting. RUclips is all about the story, of course. I really enjoy your insights.
Haha I think Lawrence Biv used to be a dog kennel in a previous life
Even then, you would need a pretty small dog.
Another great video Kev. Did you need to use your topo map or was the track easy enough to follow? It's basically in my back yard and looks to be worth a stroll.
Hi Francis, The track is easy enough to follow without the topomap app, but I always like to have the app so I can see how far I have come (or got to go).
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures cool, Thank you for that.
Great video thanx
Glad you enjoyed it
Dear Sam and Kev's Outdoor Adventures, I'm very interested in collaborating on advertising with your channel. For further details, please check the contact information in my bio. Hope to hear from you!
Awesome Kev. The bush colours look great on your video. Hope you enjoyed your time in the Kaimai
Thanks, Revilo. I loved the Kaimai's. Hopefully, I will get to see some more of them in the future.
Wet and lush. Hope those are waterproof boots. No fun sloshing around with wet feet.
The boots used to be waterproof, Connie, but they've done a few miles and now have what I think is described as "good indoor outdoor flow."
Thanks. It was fun to watch :) You got my subscription!
Thanks, Emma. Pleased that you enjoyed it.
Stunning!
It's a fantastic bit of New Zealand - even better with a bit of snow and a bright sunny day
Very nice bush and love the old hut! Thanks for sharing
Thanks, David. It's a great wee hut.
I thought that was manganuka hut it the thumbnail! Nice to see you exploring the kaimais!
No sheep on the way up like you had, though BCK, just a few cows.
Great video Kev. Well worth upping to a higher resolution if you can - we're missing so much detail of that magnificent bush you passed through. I'm UK based but returning to NZ December. I've never been to this area but will definitely make a point of exploring the Kaimai. Is there reasonable parking where you started? The North-South track looks very appealing but it's just the logistics would be a concern - how to get back to the car. Thanks for inspiring me to visit this area!
Thanks, Jeff. I hope you get to the Kaimai's on return to experience them in person. Appreciate heads up re the resolution. I might have to upgrade my video editing software.
Thought I recognized the hut, you're in our hood, it's one of the "Forgotten Five" I did a series on them. The 360 works well, thanks.
I watched your forgotten five videos. Great watch. The 360 camera makes it a bit easier to film when you're by yourself.
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures Open for a hike together if you’re ever in the hood again 👋
Where exactly are you based Dave - Hamilton area?
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures mainly yes
Thought I recognized the Kaimais in the thumbnail - turns out I even guessed the track right! Love te whare okioki. Have yet to visit Mangamuka. Thanks for the great video, hope you enjoyed your time tramping up here in the north!
Good tramp, I'm from up there. Down south now. Nicer bush to hunt up there I think, but won't be going back
Bush certainly looks a bit different to down south.
love seeing the huts....nice work!
Thanks, Jonny.
Another great watch. Good to know even you guys are still learning. I enjoy and appreciate the shared wisdom and knowledge in the comments of others who have had similar experiences to you.
Thanks, Francis. It was a bit of a learning experience for us on that tramp. Have you tested out your new pack yet?
@@samandkevsoutdooradventures Can't rush these things you know.
Great video, great videography My very first walk in the park when I started work at the Herm back in '85 My favourite walk of them all, doesn't get anymore stunning than up there The glaciers have retreated some though, I remember coming up beside the one of the right and in behind hut was a giant snow field Hooker hut, so low down, Copeland pass track won't be the same with it not beside the Hooker glacier any more Cheers for sharing brought back some great memories
The glaciers must have changed a lot since 1985. Sefton Biv is an amazing wee hut.
Great and informative video, cheers
Good to hear that you enjoyed it.
Thanks guys 👍👍
It’s my hut!
Haha, Curtis. Need to get your portrait to hang on the wall.
great video guys thanks heaps looked on map but no hut shown found Mt Curtis
Search Mount Curtis on this link. It's about 1 km to the west of the summit www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-41.903203,172.05431&z=14
Thankyou must have had an old map by the look of the sub alpine scrub I thought it must be around there.😊
Enjoyed watching this trip
Thanks Andy. Appreciate the comment.

It's definitely worth a visit, Andy
Great effort, great hike. Envious.
