Sharing videos on what I do in the garden and kitchen. Wildlife observations too. My main passion is planting, harvesting, processing, cooking. I am an avid seed-saver too.
I hope you'll enjoy and find the videos useful. Feel free to comment and share your related tips.
I live on a rural property in SE Queensland, Australia, with my husband. We are retired and have spend most of our time on the property creating the once cleared area into a flourishing food forest with a large fenced vegie garden and swales with fruit trees.
We have learned much over the years through the groups we have been a part of (Permaculture Noosa and Biodynamic Australia), the workshops we've attended and through the many volunteers that have spent time with us helping to create what we have today.

Whale encounters Hervey Bay Sep 2023
This video has movement but it has some scenes that are special. The best viewings were not recorded. I was in the moment enjoying seeing the mother and calf playing and breaching several times! My hope is that video will inspire you to get on the ocean if you have the opportunity and experience it first hand.

Whale encounters
Просмотров 166Год назад
Whale watching on a large boat in Hervey Bay! Many pods of humpback whales resting and playing in Platypus Bay. A cold, windy afternoon but an exceptional encounter with whales. The best moments were those not captured on video! Feeling much appreciation to the whales for showing up and choosing to be curious around the boat.
Bee frenzy on dragonfruit flowers

Early morning and the dragonfruit flowers are still open. They open for one night only to be pollinated by a special moth. In the morning they are still open and the bees collect pollen. The sound vibration is so special first thing in the morning!
Moringa planting yearlings
Просмотров 115Год назад
Showing how moringa seedlings can be kept, over winter, in a box, dry with no moisture. Then when the weather warms place in moist cocofibre or potting mix and within 3 weeks there will be leaf and feeder roots. They can be planted directly into the ground. It was an experiment but one could plant the dry roots directly in the soil. When seed planted in a pot and left for the summer season, it ...
Australian Pied Oystercatcher

A bird caught my attention as I walked along, an almost human deficient, Sunrise beach. I'd never seen one like this before and it was walking very purposefully. I stopped and observed. How meticulous it was in it's actions. I quickly worked out that it was catching clams on the edge of the surf, carrying it to an area out of the water, opening it and eating the contents. The same pattern, leav...
Swales - 6 swales and how they overflow & work
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.2 года назад
Just had extreme weather resulting in flooding in SE QLD. This video shows our property after 180ml of rain on 23 February 2022 and how the swales work. We've had more than that subsequently. The idea is for the water to be captured in the ground, preventing the nutrients from washing off the property. They flow into one another before the excess spills out. In our case it goes through the fore...
DIY cutting concrete expansion joints
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Cutting expansion joints on a week old concrete slab using a circular saw with a diamond tippied blade. Saw rested on thin aluminium sheets. Gentle trickle of water from a hose to cool the blade. Air, from a compressor, to blow the water away from the line. The line was drawn with a chinagraph pencil (wax based). Chalk washed off. Cracks appeared in the slab a couple of days after being poured....
Day is Dawning with nature sounds
Просмотров 452 года назад
My favourite way to start the day... listening to the sounds of the different birds and watching the changing colours of the beginning of the day. Over an hour period between 4.45 and 5.45am I recorded this at home (with my phone camera). The waking kookaburra start the day with their "laughing" sounds... then breakfast! Watch to the end! If you know the names of the birds that make their sound...

Noosa river observations within 10 minutes. Whilst I was just sitting and waiting for someone at Noosa Marina, I heard and saw a helicopter. Only then did I get my phone out of my bag! I forgot to ask you a question about sterilising the jars… I have the very same jars as you do. I put all of them into the dishwasher and had them put on the highest heat possible. How long do I put the jars into our Breville for, please? Thank you kindly, Heidi
Hello, Would you be so kind and add close captioning on your video, please? I am profoundly Deaf. We all communicate by way of ASL. I cooked the pound and a half of the turmeric rhizomes. I see that you did not cook/simmer the turmeric rhizomes until they were blended. The paste is for a dear friend whose dog (3 years old chocolate English Labrador Retriever) suffers from quite severe and chronic ear infections as well as yeast infections, bacterial fungal infections…. We have 2 American Labrador Retrievers, 17 months old and soon to be 6 months (this coming Saturday). We want to give our neighbour the golden paste and see what happens with his ears.,. Thank you kindly, Heidi
There is only talking in the introduction. The rest is just visual but the recipe is in the description. Unsure why but I am unable to edit to CC. To sterilize jars I heat them to just above 100°C for a few minutes. I hope this helps. All the best.
@@mariapage4753Thank you for trying to turn on CC. I do appreciate it although it failed to caption. I found the “description “ which I’ve not seen before. Thank you so much! Everything came out very well! That is, except for the truly terrible yellow stains on my hands and fingers! I’ve tried just about everything to get the stains off, only to no avail. Have you had success in removing stains from your hands? What did you use? Kindest regards, Heidi
It’s weird that you have just answered my question today as I noticed some yellowing on my 6 week old Moringa plants. I thought that it was because I was either overwatering or under watering them. It has been very hot where we live in Europe at 40 degrees Celsius, so I have tried to regulate the exposure time to direct sunlight. Thank you for your informative video 🖖👀
I live in the southern US where it averages between 35-45C in the summer with intense sunlight (the same latitude as north Africa) & they explode with growth. If they get a bit wilty, I'll put 'em where they get shade starting around 3PM, but full morning sun. They are understory trees & will put out a lot of large leaflets there, but they can also handle some intense sun as well.
@@MeanOldLady excellent thank you 🙏
❤ Thank you - this is very helpful. It is nicely filmed, clearly demonstrated/explained and very do-able. This fuss-free method is exactly what I have been searching for!
This batch kept well... 4 years old... I am still eating eat!
@@mariapage4753 oh wow - that’s good to know!
Thank you so much for this fantastic healing cream !! 🎉
We planted from seed and they are still very small but some are yellow. Is there a fix?
Sounds like they may be lacking nutrients in the soil. A seaweed or fish based product as a weak tea watered over them. If you're in Spring they should continue to grow. But if you are in Autumn now then don't do anything. They may be going dormant. The stem will die but the root ball will shoot when the weather warms again. Thankyou. Can I just use the roots instead of leaves ?
Yes absolutely!
Can I use coconut oil instead of Olive since it’s my first attempt ?
@@Mister.Doodler coconut oil should infuse but the texture will vary. Coconut oil hardens when cold and is liquid when warm.
I read somewhere that you must dry the herbs and infuse them in oil for weeks. This is much quicker. Is there any difference in the effectiveness?
I can't comment on effectiveness and yes it does take long with the other method.
Really interesting video! I had no idea!
Thank you for the video; I have started this. I am in the UK and cannot get Key limes here so have used Persian limes instead (a cross between a Key lime and a lemon). I will use mustard oil instead of olive oil and 3 tablespoons of cayenne. I have given it a boost start with some of today's kefir whey. Most of my ferments start at 6-7 on the pH scale and I stop them at 3.5. The starting measurement for these limes is 2.95.
TOO much filler video to watch. Not wanting to be entertained. Give the info cut-&-dry. I believe you Brits say "get crackin!" when brevity is in order.
I appreciate your feedback. I never expected it to be everybody's cup-of-tea. FYI I'm not a Brit!
Excellent presentation
Nice thank you :) I was worried already 😬
If you are going to cut in control joints - which these are, they should be cut in within 12-24 hours after the concrete is finished. Then all the cracking will occur at the cuts, not in the middle of the slab like you have.
Can you please tell me what is this power tool called? is it a normal circular saw for cutting timber with a diamond blade in it?
Yes it is.
@@mariapage4753 thank you for that

It's a food to add to your healthy diet!
Rose HIPS , Acerola or CAMU CAMU, which contains a very high level of vitamin C, much more than Acerola. Hi, some of mine are coming out with "crinkled/deformed" leaves when they are very young, do you have any ideas why?
Not sure. Water?
@@mariapage4753 I got the soil from the landscape supplies, I think it has to much ammonia in it, yet some new ones I planted in different soil do the same thing. Do you think I should keep the seedlings dryer? Is it better to water less?
Water is ok if soil is well drained.
Might be due to infection
It might be heat trauma, what is your climate?
I'm sure after two years you know to wet them to remove the skin easier? You can roast those green ones in the over for 30 minutes and that skin peels off in one piece.? Big hugs
Can't read writing in that colour use black
Beautiful. I'm in the process of deisgning and building/digging swales, garden beds, pathways on contour on a hillside but on a much smaller scale.
Let’s just chuck everything in the bushes!! 🤣🤣
I have a few spots in the garden where I do this! Weeds too! It breaks down and becomes soil!
Loved the recipe..would like to know for how long they are safe to keep.
I've had a jar in the fridge for 2 years... still good
I wish I could walk barefoot in my garden. Unfortunately too many things in my area want to kill or hurt me. Snakes, scorpions, centipedes, black widows, and many more critters. Thank you for the lovely video! I'm about to go harvest some comfrey!
Sounds like a hostile environment!
@Mrs.GrayMan very 😂
I love love love your video! It’s straight to the point and simple to follow! Thank you!!!
Is it true comfrey has cancer causing agents?
Yellow and green leaves have same nutrients?
No
Beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing.

I love your video! My 74 yr mother is having a 5th hip-replacement-repair in 18months. I have been searching for solutions for her. I wish you were closer, I'm in USA, I would love to buy some comfrey ointment from you. I am recovering from my 3rd surgery in three years and physically unable to make my own. Regardless, will keep watching your content, great info!
Thanks for your comment. All the best to you both.
Check out ETSY. You can find some there. God bless.
I was given some comfrey cream years ago by a herbalist and it was brilliant. I have wanted some ever since & this is the first time I have heard of it. Thank you.
Hi Maria ..just subscribed....thanks I just had a big harvest from my garden . I live alone on 5 acres growing all my own food . Bless your heart. I live in Gympie QLD
For far the best video and recipe for turmeric paste. Could you tell me why did you soak the turmeric?
Soaking can make the roots softer to process for a smoother texture. But if freshly harvested it may not be necessary.
@@mariapage4753 Thanks!
Great presentation. Thanks. I have a St Andrews Cross Spider in my kitchen and she has just made the suc for her babies. Not really sure i want them all in my kitchen. Do you think I could move them?
I can't answer that for you. Follow your own feeling... or tell her what you would like!
Hi Maria , we live near Woodford QLD and grow loads of tumeric so i am pretty keen to try this one , could you tell me how long the shelf life is please ? or would it do better if i waterbath it before putting on the shelf ? I do Fowler jars and Ball jarsI have subscribed thanks so much for sharing
If the jars are sealed correctly they should keep well. I keep them in the fridge and still have some that are a year old... still good!
Ummm... really don't recommend water and electric saws. This could and has killed people.
Thanks... wasn't aware of this.
Concrete dust also kills and a wet cut will chip less. Wet tile saws are electric. Must use a GFCI outlet of course. I just wet cut my 1600 sqft patio and I'm still alive.
The cleaner is metallic. Why isn't that a problem?
Sure! Pls see the comment below.
Thank you Maria, I had only just heard of Isabel Shipards herb farm a couple of weeks ago, I live not far from where her farm was and had just bought some herbs from her family. Sad she is gone…amazing lady.. I was wondering do you replant the root base once you take the tap roots off for ointment. Just in the middle of attempting my first batch😊
BTW you probably know the herb farm is no longer in action, wish I had known about her long ago, I have lived on the coast for over 30 years
If you just leave a little piece in the ground, it will grow! It usually breaks when I dig it out, then grows back.
Thank you
It looks like you planted them in shade? Do you dig them up every year? Thank you for this video
This is the final place. The support plants (pigeon pea, popcorn cassia & crotalaria) around them were pruned about 2 weeks later so that they have more sunlight.
