How To Make A Churchwarden Pipe
This video shows my method for making a churchwarden pipe, more specifically a churchwarden pipe that utilizes a single piece of uninterrupted wood rather than a separate bowl and stem or halves that are glued together.
Prior to making the form I use for bending the stem in this video, I had a very makeshift approach. I'd like to credit @arcangeloambrosi4130 since I borrowed the general idea for the form shown here from a video of his. He is an incredible pipe maker and sculptor!
Thanks to my brother, Jake, for letting me catch a few shots of him smoking his pipe for this video!

Making A Minimalist Leather Wallet

Four years ago I made myself a minimalist leather wallet that could carry all of my necessities, but was still sleek and small enough to be comfortable in a front pocket. Beautiful. inspiring. Thank you. ... For some crazy reason I always assumed the hole was drilled last and wondered how in the world that was accomplished. This is yet another perfect example of how looking at something we don't understand from a completely different perspective can make everything come together and make perfect sense.
Amazing. You make it look simple
Beautiful pipe , Thanks for showing your processing. Now I'm going to have another project trying to conceive.
Thank you!! I’m glad you like it!
Excellent work and great video Thanks
Thank you sir!!
Hell yeah cant wait to check them out need one of these
I’ve got some smaller ones in the works currently, but should be working on some longer ones by the end of the year!
I never would have been interested in all that pipe making I probably will never make a pipe I don’t know but this video is fantastic thank you
I take that as a high compliment. Thank you very much!
Instead of carving it from a slab with relatively unidirectional grain do you think you could make one like a shillelagh, with the stem drilled through the pith of a branch and the bowl drilled into a round section of the trunk? I expect a finished pipe so made would look really good once it got polished up.
That’s certainly an alternative to this method and one that I might make a video on a some point. However, I enjoy the challenge and unique creation of this technique. But if someone just wanted a simple to make, mostly headache free project, that might suit them better.
*pipe bending process really explains a lot here. thanks.

@@matthewkingsman5800 A “cake” forms from smoking the pipe, and it is made up of the carbon and resin from the burned tobacco.
@@EccentricArtisan ah...that makes sense. I had always wondered if it needed to be burnished, or oil treated prior to smoking.
Is there any benefits to forming such pipes with uncured or green wood, or soaking the wood in water
@@stephenroman9015 I’ve not tried those methods, so I couldn’t say for sure. My guess from woodworking experience in general is that green wood may split on you when cutting it down to those dimensions for the pipe. Soaking wood in water would probably work fine, so long as you fully saturate the wood.
Pretty brilliant
@@stephenroman9015 thank you!
Really damned good tutorial. Have you considered an Etsy or Ebay store? I have zero meta footprint and plan to keep it that way.
@@seraphuziel thanks! And I can appreciate that as I don’t particularly like any social media, but that’s what I use currently. Etsy and Ebay are pure theft with their fees, I wouldn’t sell on either. I occasionally use eBay to get rid of things I don’t use, but frankly I find it insulting that they gouge people. I'm actually extremely curious how long that bowl lasts before cracking, and/or if you're even having any issues with cracking from prolonged smoking. Thanks!

@@sinmaan7568 though it was probably done with a similar method and time period accurate tools, it’s far more common that other methods were used. This is just how I have chosen to make my pipes. Where can I purchase one? I’ve been smoking churchwarden pipe for years now. I’ve been getting them from Amazon, but like you said, the stem is glued with two separate pieces. And after a little while, it starts to separate and break. I would love to purchase one of your pipes.
@@bigknowzentertainment8423 if you keep an eye out on my Facebook or Instagram page, that’s where I post them when they become available!
Can you make a jig out of a block of wood that will rest against your workpiece at the entry point and keep your bit straight? Kind of like a starter drilling block? That way, your drill and bit are not flopping around between the chuck and the entry point and dependent on your nerves of steel to stay straight. I recognize it will shorten your bit depth. Perhaps to just get started straight however.
@@Ragingmarmot I’ve got a pretty good setup I’ve come up with. I’m intending to share that jig in a future video.
@@EccentricArtisan Not surprised. 😎 I look forward to giving this a try. I even went as far as to find a friend with some antlers I can use. Thank you.

Ruined many a pipe with drill wander....happens with long bits
@@lonewolf5896 for sure. I’m working on refining a jig/method for a future video that should help most people accomplish the drilling with relative ease. It can be very challenging to do it freehand.
How much bend can you get with that method? I made a fairly curved Churchwarden once, the bowl came out too big, and the draft hole was too small and it clogged after 3 months. To make it though I ripped the back of the stim off with a bandsaw, dremeld out the long draft hole and drilled the short one and then glued the stim back on.
@@Gong-Fu_Hermit for the sake of bending any typical pipe stem, even a very deeply curved design, the main limiting factor is how saturated you get the material beforehand. The key to bending is lots of moisture and adequate heat. Obviously there are a lot of variables depending on your method, the material itself, the environment, etc. but generally you can get whatever bend you want if you get the material pliable enough. With long wood stems cleaning immediately after every single smoke is critical.
@@EccentricArtisan good to know, yes on my regular pipe I usually leave a piece of thinner weed wacker string in the pipe after smoking. Not sure how normal pipe smokers keep the long stims clean.
@@Gong-Fu_Hermit yoy can get 12” pipe cleaners from some pipe and tobacco shops as well as other places like Amazon. Those will work for the majority of churchwardens. If you need something longer you may have to do a bit more searching.
Not remotely critical (truly coming from someone who assumes he's wrong but wanting to understand) is there a reason that you don't do the initial drilling with the press? I feel like it would allow for more precision and easier to keep your work in line which seems like the key to success here but I'm sure there's something I'm not seeing.
A totally fair question and something that I didn’t address in the video. There are a few reasons. The main one being that I wanted to show that even the hardest part of this process is entirely possible with just a hand drill. I wanted to show the accessibility of the project because I have seen that the largest complaint on how to videos is the perceived inaccessibility due to tool usage. Also, it takes a fair sized drill press to make that happen. If you think about it, most of these pipes being around 12” in length, you need a significant amount of distance between your table and chuck in order to accommodate that plus your bit. That means most small tabletop presses won’t even work for the initial drilling. Even the larger of the two presses I have won’t make the final drilling. And I could get one, for sure, but in my opinion that’s probably less practical than a couple of other options. I’m working on testing some inexpensive/easy to make jigs for a future video that will be helpful in improving multiple parts of the process. One of those involves a guide system for both the hand drill and bit to reduce their side to side movement and deflection.
Won't the bowl get very hot?
That depends largely upon how rapidly you smoke. A greater rate of burn will in turn produce more heat. I prefer a slow and pensive smoke.
@@EccentricArtisan I see, it's very pretty :)
Thank you!!
Beautiful work!
Thank you!!
