One of the fiercest dramatic talents in the field” (The New York Times), Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian’s “versatility is astounding” (The Times) with a “wild voice [that is] rich and dark” (Le Monde). Regularly engaged at the world’s leading opera houses, she has recently performed at the Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Real Madrid, the Salzburger Festspiele, the Bolshoi Theatre and Teatro alla Scala. She was a founding member of Vilnius City Opera, has twice been awarded the Golden Stage Cross (the highest award for singers in Lithuania), was named Best Female Lead in 2019 at the Austrian Music Theater Awards, Female Opera Singer of the Year in 2022 by the Ópera XXI Association, and Female Singer of the Year at the Opus Klassik Awards in 2023.

Don't have enough elements to criticize the staging one way or another but one thing I know for sure: Ms. Grigorian is a great singing actress and her Salome is simply fantastic.

I’ve never understood the appeal of Turandot. Her two big scenes are just a lot of screaming. The plot is ridiculous. The only genuine characters are Ping Pang Pong. But of course the tenor has Nessun Dorma, so everybody wants to hear it. Fanciulla, Tabarro, Angelica, and Schicchi are much better operas from Puccini’s later period.
I am weeping.

Etwas Schlimmeres als das, was in der Arie besungen wird, kann einer Frau nicht passieren. Neben der beispiellosen Genialität Puccinis zeigt Asmik Grigorian, dass sie eine würdige Nachfolgerin Renata Scottos ist, gesanglich ebenso wie schauspielerisch.Wäre ich eine Frau und eine Sängerin, ich könnte dieses Stück nie zu Ende bringen, weil ich ständig in Tränen ausbrechen würde. Chapeau an die wunderbare Sängerin !

I had the pleasure of seeing her sensational Butterfly at the Met a couple of months ago. The audience was overjoyed to witness such a sublime performance. She is by far the best Butterfly I’ve ever seen.
