Mostly kayak fishing with some land based fishing mixed in, around Kodiak, Alaska and beyond. Jigging for halibut and bottom fish along with chasing salmon. An occasional catch and cook or how to thrown in as well. Follow along with me on my journey to catch a barn door sized halibut or 50+ pound king salmon from a kayak.
How NOT to beach a fishing kayak😂
Some days you’re the windshield, some days you’re the bug🤦♂️. Muck boots with the hand holds are a poor choice in hindsight. Got caught up on a rod holder and down goes Frazier! Mid-September Kodiak water temps aren’t too terrible yet at least….

Experience the Thrill of Kayak Coho Salmon Fishing in Kodiak Alaska
Просмотров 849Год назад
Finally got back out in the kayak to chase some coho (silver) salmon. I posted a poll on my community page asking what video I should make next and saltwater kayak trolling was the winner. I'm glad it was because the fish were definitely in the bay this day, and the weather wasn't half bad! I hooked all the fish using a purple haze flasher with around a 3' leader to a black and white "cop car" ...
Underwater GoPro float on remote salmon river kodiak alaska

Have you ever wondered what an Alaskan salmon stream looks like underneath the surface world? Just exactly how many fish are swimming past your spinner or fly before one finally decides to grab it? I decided to put a GoPro under a float and send it down the river, just because it sounded like a fun idea😄😄 Thanks for watching and tight lines! Follow on Instagram kodiyakangler Foll...
Ocean Dolly Varden fishing from the beach in Kodiak Alaska

Took advantage of a stunning break in the weather to spoon feed some sea run Dolly Varden Char. Surf casting a 1/6 ounce Luhr Jensen rainbow trout Krocodile spoon was the ticket for these two fat and feisty fish. Got them on my first two casts and then fished another 40 minutes without a single strike. Fish are funny like that sometimes. The second fish, while far from my PB was my biggest of 2...

I coming up in a few days how is the silvers running on the road system?
I haven’t been in town for the last 6 weeks so I can only only give you second hand info. Sounds like it’s been a fairly typical run so far. Average numbers and in the usual spots. Nothing smoking hot that I’ve heard
@@kodiyakangler thank you much appreciated. This is my first time exploring. I worked up there when I was young got to fish a little. If you know any Bishops on the island they are my relatives. I’m lucky to have them as hosts
@@benbishop-zl7ovWell if you see Randy Bishop tell him Sensei says hello!
😄 Brrrrrr!
Nah I was burning red with embarrassment 😂😂
It happens! Looks like fun too. Enjoy.
Definitely😂 Thanks for watching!
Just curious, ever kayak fished Valdez? I’m getting ready to be there and was looking to see if I could peddle out to some fish. I got a limit of halibut and rockfish everyday I went out in Seward! Lmk thank you!
@@Zach-e8i Ah man wish I had some intel for you but I’ve never even been to Valdez 😝. I’d be curious how you do though! Congratulations on the good luck in Seward! Thanks for watching!
Which beach were you at?
Mill bay beach but any beach with a salmon stream near it will have Dollie’s feeding on outgoing fry
I've never been to that beach but I was already thinking about giving it a try when I am there at the end of this August. Thanks! And safe travels during your re-location.
They plant coho that return to that beach end of august. I was in that bay for my kayak trolling for silvers video but have caught them standing on the beach too. Good luck and tight lines!!
That sounds great. I will be fly fishing. So a couple of more questions. If I go out there, what time of Tide would best? Would you recommend floating line, intermediate sink (slow) line or fast sinking? (Meaning do I need to get down deep to fish for them?) I'll wade a bit out into the water and I can cast out 60 to 80 ft. Thanks again! Sorry we won't be able to meet up!
I forgot to mention that by the end of August the Dollie’s will have transitioned into the rivers and you won’t have any luck for them off the beaches. The coho will usually be pretty close to the surface and I’ve always used floating line with a weighted fly but intermediate sinking line could also come in handy on a bright sunny day (can’t help you with that one🤪 bring rain gear). If you wanted to chase Dolly Varden in the rivers, my absolute favorite fishery here, you can use any fly you want as long as it’s an egg pattern😂. Look for them in tail outs below the pink salmon
Wow! I've done some kayak fishing for Red Fish in Florida but this looks way better! Is there anyone on the island that will take visitors out on a kayak? I'd love to try that some time. I visit Kodiak once every summer for work and I'd love to give kayaking a try!
Not that I’m aware of. Not a lot of us kayak fisherman here. I’d normally tell you to hit me up when you’re in town and I’d see if I could help you out but I’m in the middle of getting off the rock and moving to the mainland. Best of luck and tight lines! Thanks for watching and dropping me a comment
Just stumbled across your channel. Im sitting at a desk in Tennessee thinking back to the few trips i was lucky enough to make to Alaska. Your videos bring back great memories and make my day much better.
Ahh man comments like this mean so much! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment it’s greatly appreciated. Tight lines!
My greatest fishing day ever was on Kodiak island cacthing pink Salmon. I stopped counting at 100 fish. We were in the Buskin river in the mid 1990's and were catching them on every cast almost all day long, It was crazy.
They are the gateway drug to fly fishing for silvers😂😂. I definitely love catching them, just not when I’m after those bright coho’s. Thank you for watching!!
I love Kodiak fished it my whole life fisherman's paradise! 🐻 🎣👍
That it is. Thanks for watching!
Was that in the buskin? Hard to tell. 🐻🎣
No remote zone river. Thanks for watching!
I've traveled extensively throughout Alaska for over 40 years and Kodiak is my favorite place I know the island like the back of my hand. Do you live there?
Yes I do
@@kodiyakangler Absolute fisherman's paradise! I'll be there late September for silvers. ✌️🎣👍🐻
Tight lines! Perhaps I’ll see you on the river
I love it I love all animals ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful and powerful creatures
Yes they are!!
all it needs is salt and pepper
lol 😂 Thanks for watching!
Do you not carry a firearm? Bear spray? Big pointy knife😂
I occasionally pack a firearm. I’m not a fan of bear spray personally. A road flare is my preferred deterrent. Wildlife have a huge fear of fire and cracking off a road flare usually sends anything running
Sweet footage man!! Why no keeping them? What's the regs on dolly trout there?
I don’t keep Dolly Varden except occasionally out of the ocean as a shore lunch over a campfire. There are too many other more delicious options here in Alaska. The limit is currently 10 per day here in Kodiak. Thanks for watching!
bring a net please trout are so fragile. Beauty fish tho those are some big dollies!
I have started bringing a net-something you don’t see anyone doing here. Thanks for the input and for watching. Tight lines!
glad to hear man, same to you!@@kodiyakangler
I’m not sure rodeo is the right word! Just getting back on the socials after archery season. Good to see you on the screen again.
Wish I could say my season was half as successful as your season!!! Man I’m happy for you. Great muley and elk!!
@@kodiyakangler Thanks mate. I still have a Texas nilgai hunt in January. Fingers crossed I can get the triple
Can’t wait to see the results of that hunt. Keep up the success man!!
I'm never going to be rich enough to ever travel. But one place of my favourites is to watch how awesome Alaskan wilderness and how beautiful it looks 💙
Ah man never say never! I agree traveling is becoming a rich man’s game. Thanks for watching!
❤
Thanks for watching!
Why would you troll in twitching water
🤷It’s what I know works. What would you recommend?
The trick is you eat bear until you can husband sheep with little abuse.
I’m not even sure what the heck that means😂😂
I love halibut fishin, we go to valdez.
That’s a long drive for us island folks😜. Tight lines
I love the channel! I live in Alaska as well in Delta Junction. I've got a few videos of us snowmachining on the Denali highway.
I'll check it out! Thanks for watching!
Idk. I bearly see anything.
Sorry I’ll swim up to them next time😂😂. Guess the old iPhone 6 is in need of an upgrade.
I live in Westchester County New York actually Katonah and I have a bear regularly visit my backyard. I’m on 5 acres so he can drink water out of my pool.
Sounds wonderful! Thanks for watching!
**turns around** oh, shit!
That’s happened a few times 😂😂😂. Thanks for watching
How do I get a kayak like yours the pedal feature appeals to me
Most major kayak manufacturers make a pedal drive kayak. Mine is a wilderness systems Recon 120 HD www.wildernesssystems.com/us/kayaks/recon-120-hd
Outstanding! I've caught a few Silvers and a few Kings from my kayak. A rodeo is right. I learned to be very patient and wait until the fish is spent and laying on its side before netting them. It's hard to do though. You did a fine job and my heart was pumping!
You know exactly what I’m talking about! Thanks for watch and taking the time to leave a comment. It’s appreciated more than you know. Tight lines!!
Love the video! Fish I got to come back home to fall fish for silvers this year

@@kodiyakangler tight lines, brother! Keep up the great fishing!
Sweet!
Guess you motivated me to get out and catch some fish😂😂 Thanks!!
Nice job fishing! I’m jealous!
Thanks! 👍
Really puts into perspective how much harder it is to land these salmon on a kayak! Managing the downrigger, fighting the fish, slinging the net around, you got it done!
Yeah it’s definitely something that takes patience, which I don’t have enough of, and a little luck😂. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment, it’s greatly appreciated! Tight lines
Awesome video!
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment it’s greatly appreciated. Tight lines!
Thank you for sharing your setup and where to find fish. Going to put it to use next week in juneau.
Hopefully you have a great trip!! Tight lines and thanks for watching!
Humpies yuk 😮 is that coming up Saltry now?
Lol this isn’t Saltery but yeah there are pinks there now
that's a LOT of fish
is size 4 or size 5 better on average for the majority of fishing spots in kodiak?
I prefer #4 just seems to work better on fish that have been pressured a lot
@@kodiyakangler thank you, that makes sense!! how about color wise for the vibrax spinners?
I like blue, orange and pink/blue and black. Truth be told I prefer the Kodiak custom spinners over the Vibrax though🫣. Thanks for watching and the interaction through the comments, much appreciated!
@@kodiyakangler thanks for all the helpful information! I'll be up there next month, hopefully see you around
Looks like you caught one of the ones I caught and released the other day 😜
You never know could be😂
Wow! Solid spot! Hope I can fish there someday! New friend from the Philippines. Full support. 👊🏼😁🎣🐟
Thank you so much! Appreciate you watching and for the kind words
@@kodiyakangler I also would like to invite you to visit my youtube channel to see our fishing trip here in the philippines. Safe fishing always 😁🎣🐟
I just subscribed to your channel. I'm from Kodiak also. Milbay? How did you set up you're rig? Any weight on your line or just the lure?
Thanks for watching and subscribing I really appreciate it. Yeah Mill Bay and just the spoon no added weight.
@@kodiyakangler Thank you very much! More power and more fish to catch 👊🏼😁🎣❤️
How do dolly’s eat? You’ll have to start a side hustle guiding tourists!
I typically only keep them for a shore lunch when camping. Not bad, comparable to trout. We are pretty spoiled up here and there’s plenty of better tasting fish around. Pound for pound as good a fighter as anything if you use appropriate sized tackle. I don’t even want to go to my regular job most days, definitely don’t need another 😛😛😛
Very cool, next time you’re in town we should go fishing
That would be awesome
Dang. You were killing it!
It was a good evening for sure
Why do you have the egg so far above the hook?
Keeps the fish from getting hooked deep, which is essential when practicing catch and release. 99 percent of the fish hooked on a pegged bead are in the corner of the mouth. Thanks for watching hope you found something useful for you
Well done mate. Say G’day to LS for me.
Thanks for watching!
Watching the halibut jump out of the tote and chase Kevin around the deck is great entertainment 😂. It made my morning coffee ! Can't wait to get out there!
Glad you enjoyed it😂😂
Well done cousin!
Thank you and thanks for watching!!
Does the bead work this time of year as well? Or only once more of the reds and pinks are in?
It’s more of a late season tactic. Reds spawn in the lake so there’s not really any eggs drifting down the rivers until the pinks show up. Plus a huge majority of the Dolly Varden are migrating out to the ocean to feed on salmon smolt and baitfish until the pinks start coming in.
Thanks for watching by the way, hopefully you found some helpful info
Awesome video. Is this on the road system?
Thanks for watching. Yes it’s the Buskin river right outside of town
Which part of buskin river is this?
@@lancecruz7584 It’s the upper Buskin above the Highway. Thanks for watching!
@@kodiyakangler is it left side of the aure?
