    Got to say this is my favourite video of yours, everything was right on the money, very funny 😂. I'm bored of a lot of channels content, it can't be very sustainable to go out multiple times a week buying 10-15 bangers and a grail on Sundays.

    In the same as you man . None of my friends or family collect like I do but do have gamer friends . I agree with a lot of what you say here . I’ve always thought bangers was an English thing :) Belter up here in Scotland . Something I like about watching different channels is regional accents and stuff are in play . Local slang and that . Uk is very varied on that kind of stuff . Also a lot of the terms are subjective one mans “grail” is another mans “fodder” Looking forward to this years journey Happy game foraging :p

      Cheers mate looking forward to the 2025 foraging 🤭. Yeah collected for years on my own like a hermit 😅 oh bangers is 100% a common slang term, here it throughout the UK, especially in previous years. Loved the video! The "hunting" one had me, the phrase has always been one I dislike - especially when you think about the reality of it being just a bloke stood filming stuff on a shelf in a charity shop 😅 I've noticed some comments about addiction and totally agree with most of what I've read. I collect myself and to people close to me I could be accused of being addicted as I have a sizeable collection but I am strict that I only collect for older consoles I played back in their day and only buy things I am actually interested in playing and not because of their prestige in the collecting circles 😆 Also I completely agree about the "all killer no filler", it can definitely be subjective! I would take the original Bioshock any day over a £500 game that I have no interest in playing!

      Thanks mate, yeah the hunting phase is ine that the second I heard it I thought to myself people cannot really be saying that out loud 🤣 Yeah the people that have touched on terminology being used to encourage and mask addictive behaviours is something I genuinely didnt anticipate but is very eye opening 😟

I agree with you on grails/holy grail. In my opinion all killer no filler means filled with good games not necessarily price. To be serious though, I've stopped watching Dan the games man as everything was a banger and it got annoying. I agree with you on grails. All killer I see as a collectors term mean good games only not necessarily expensive. In the wild I class as somewhere that doesn't 'order in' games. So I'd class a cash converters as the wild as they could have anything in there, like your top gun and birds of steel pick ups, and it's more about look that you come across them.

    With you on most of these, In the Wild gets used so much even when somethings bought in cex, nope, not for me. Banger might be a bit of a regional thing, ive let slip a banger or two but in manchester its pretty common to describe something as banging or a banger, I'll use belting or a belter more often as thats a common north manchester or even lancashire phrase. Its ckearly been done to impress retro ghetto and make a friend. Its not right at all. His channel makes me cringe so hard, he has a huge pile of deliveries each week from his 'friends' that just send hundreds of pounds worth of things each month. This videos reqlly make me cringe hard. Worst ine for me from a few years ago is 'LETS GO!' ten times per video. I do feel people are collecting now to copy and keep up with other people. Retro ghetto i uave said on his videos people are buying utter shite just to copy him. They also think its funny buying/spending loads of games and egg eachother on during their 'hunts'. Its not healthy its more of an addiction now than a collection. I started going down that route a year or two ago. I looked what id spent in a year and stopped, sold loads of stuff od brought for fomo and kept what i actually liked.

    Pretty sure “in the wild” just means seeing something in person and not online. Doesn’t matter if it is from a charity shop or a flea market or a game store, if you can see it and hold it in person, it’s in the wild. It’s a way to distinguish that from buying things from eBay and mercari.

      @@gentlemanofgames Totally. I can understand that the lingo with being "on the hunt" and "in the wild" is a little strange. But from what I can understand, people just mean it's nice to see things "in person," and that's what they mean by "in the wild." The internet has gone pretty far down the hunting metaphor track with the nomenclature, lol. Just using simple language that says what you mean is just fine in my book. One that I really dislike is the collector community's focus on price and calling games that are cheap "fodder" or "filler" when, as you said, many of those are great games and are cheap because they were great and sold a lot of copies. To me, those are "classics" or "staples" of the collection. But that's coming from the perspective of someone who collects games to play them, not just to have expensive collectibles, so what do I know?

    • @gentlemanofgames
      @gentlemanofgames 17 часов назад

      @@dormouse03 I think at the end of the day gamers are the reason these games are made and inevitably their actions dictate what is rare and desirable for collectors later down the line. I would say a game over $100 is a heavy hitter. a Grail like you said is personal, so for me that's Turtles in time on the SNES because of memories. And I love the idea of the community coming together to say what a holy Grail is, and that really should come down to rareness and cost. Something like stadium events. All killer no filler should be based on the games you are actually going to play or love, I just finished Mafia and it's not expensive, but to me that's killer! Great video BTW. Super fun to watch.

    Great video, and I agree with your observations-they really resonate. If I may, I’d like to add ‘shovelware’ into the mix. This term refers to software hastily ‘shoveled’ out with little regard for quality, often to cash in on trends or fads like movies, franchises, fitness crazes, or platforms like the Wii. I think ‘shovelware’ is a more fitting term than ‘fodder’ or ‘filler’ in these cases. My understanding of ‘filler’ is that it refers to titles people own but don’t intend to play, used purely to bulk out a collection (or YT setup background), whereas ‘fodder’ feels more like disposable content consumed/played and forgotten. For me "Heavy hitter" means a game that now sells above original retail, and is a good game that people want to play. So desirable thus cost more than youd wona pay. "Grail" is a game i want but is either expensive and/or uncommon. "Holy grail" actual rare and super expensive. Cost more than rent. On that subject a term i hate is "rare" for me there arent many actually rare games. If you can go to a shop or online right now and can buy it then it isnt rare, its just maybe very expensive. But if you cant find it or it only pops up on ebay 1 or 2 times a year then its rare for me. An example a friends said pokemon xd is rare, no its not, multiple copies available right now to buy in cex and ebay. Printed in the thousands. Pokemon games printed in the millions yet some cart only go for £100+. Desirable not rare. "Fodder/filler" shit games id never wont play, very subjective, everyones different. "Game hunting" i use the term, its a fun short hand for me to say, im going out to look for games, whp knows what ill find if anything but ill have fun doing it. I only say it to myself or other game collectors. "In the wild" anywhere outside that you can buy games unexpectedly. So carboot and charity shops, yes. Off of people on fb where you have to arrange to collect it. I would of put game shops and cex in that category too but now they are gona be "in the zoo" for me now, thats a perfect way to describe what we do to games we dont want that we find in the wild. "Bangers" i dont use this word for gaming. Its a sausage and comes with mash. "All killer no filler" complete bollocks, what you collect is subjective and based i think on nostalgia, for the retro stuff anyway, so very subjective. For me football manager would be a filler game cos id never play it and have no desire too. But for others it may be their favorite game. I think the problem in the game collecting youtube community is that to continue to create content they have to constantly move their collecting goal posts. Full sets or sub sets to make a series and keep the views coming. If you werent putting it on yt would you collect it? But on the flip side would i watch if they werent doing it this way? Its kinda collecting vicariously through them as i only add maybe 20 games a year to my collection cos its a casual hobby for me. And its how i find games ive never heard of. Another annoyance for me is when does collecting become just showing off? Again that line is very subjective for everyone. An example is retro ghetto, i like his videos but i hate that every sunday at least half the video is him tidying away or rearranging his game room for more than half the video. I used to watch all of it but now skip past that montage every week, im just bored of it now. Dont want to see you mary kondo your games every week. But i do enjoy his game hunting and pick ups.

      @gentlemanofgames День назад

      Thanks for taking the time to comment mate. Your points/descriptions are great and we are on the same wave length😁, I would say: Think your description of rare is how I see Holy Grail, cannot just buy it, or if you can there is 1 or 2 and you will be fighting other collectors to own that one. The fact that you say hunting to yourself and not to general public, and i don't say it at all shows how cringe it truly is 😂. I love Football manager I must admit, one of my desert Island games. Good point about YT collecting one thing onto the next for content, and living vicariously through others, I don't see a problem with that so long as it doesn't go too far. I'm becoming very aware how many people have concerns over particular channels messages to the community from this video. Thanks for watching and support mate 👍

    I think some of the terminologies are dependent on geography!! It's not just vocabulary used by collectors/gamers but by people in their everyday lives!! I'm from North Manchester, ANYTHING that's good is a banger!! Anything that's mint is also a banger and by default good!! 😅 "Hunting" - I don't mind that one but it's not something I'd say myself... "All killer" I don't think that's to do with price/value. I think that's more to do with genuinely good games. But that's subjective and obviously very personal - I prefer to say that my collection is "heavily curated"... I genuinely want to play everything in my collection because I genuinely believe that they are all bangers!! 😉 Grail is personal and nothing to do with value but could indicate rarity?? Holy grail has to be unobtainable - one of a kind!! "In the wild" - I use that one a lot to be fair. To me it's more about coming across something that you wouldn't normally find in person - normally only online. I can honestly say that I've never found anything in the wild ... 😢

  • @Corbana
    @Corbana 2 дня назад

    I have probably used most of these in my own pickups videos 😅 however my understanding of the phrases is... When I talk about Fodder I tend to mean games that are going to feed the collection i.e. I pick up Wii sports as it's good trade fodder, as I pay £1 for it and get £6 back for it to use for a game I need, the term I think you are thinking of is filler as in shelf filler which just takes up space. Heavy hitter is subjective to someone collecting on a budget a £20 game could be a heavy hitter whereas someone who gets a £200 game may say it's a heavy hitter. Grail/holy grail is over used imo, it should be like you say something that is neigh on unobtainable thinks like the Celtics Vs Lakers on mega drive where there are only 14 known pal copies Killer no filler again is subjective but you're right it's in essence saying I only want good games and not rubbish ones I e. Fallout is great so is a killer game FIFA 06 on PS2 is a filler game. In the wild I would use in the way you've described, finding something in a charity shop/car boot is in the wild, finding it in a game shop, cex etc is like you say in captivity at best. Hunting I think is an extension of in the wild, you're going into the wild to hunt for video games. Bangers, haha yeah I remember it being a bad car or even a sausage (with mash)... However I think it's probably from the music world where songs are referred to as banging or bangers.

    Apologies, I feel another comment to share. So you've discussed the different elements of games, yet there is one that has not been included that deserves probably a video in its own right...and that is the 'Chickens arsehole' of third party publishers. Those games that no one shelled out good hard earned cash on release date, and in some cases have been elevated to holy grails based purely on the scarecity of availability. Trash from inception to release. These include but are not limited to Phoenix, midas, fun box (Uk only publisher afaik), Big Ben - Big on peripherial attachements. What terminology is used for these arse pube releases...not fillers at all. Lemons definately and rarely talked about. The wii was notorious for these and will no doubt become a new trend in the near future. Let's not forget the plethora of fitness games on console...ooh the irony.

    Funny af. I am a collector, never used the word 'Fodder for anything other than Cannon Fodder - Great game btw. Fodder has been co-opted as a generic term for 'Filler'. Fillers are just mass produced titles, readily available any generically cheap. Old Fifa's, Some driving games, old cods. All good games in their own right, but a dime a dozen. Heavy hitters - in other words,,,slightly more expensive than standard titles and not so easy to come by in terms of availability. Price and demand factor in massively on what decides a heavy hitter. Holy Grails are those titles we wish we bought on release...knowing they would be soildly expensive down the years....ahem Cindy World on ps1....is a heavy hitter based on price...not quality. Everyone has their own persoanl traits in how they use words to describe 'things' it shouldn't make any difference. Just assess what the item is and make your own mind up, ignore the jargon.
