Apertura Carbonstar 150, "Defeating my Newtonian Dew Issues and Optical Reliability"
In my last video, the Apertura Carbonstar 150 suffered from some dew problems, causing the scope to last only 1 hour before my optics fogged up. In this video, I tackle this issue using a traditional method but would I be able to replicate my first night out? Would I be able to again collimate this scope and get additional data on my target?
That's the issue I see with SOME mirrored optics is the ability to get like results night after night since there is a human factor involved. What looks great one night might not be great on another! While this may take the entire series to asses. We can see if we can establish the start of a pattern with the optics provided by Apertura. Additionally,...

Apertura Carbonstar 150 "First Newtonian Out of Box Performance and Experience"
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.14 дней назад
I finally get a break in the clouds and test out the Apertura Carbon Star 150 right out of the box. Apertura claims that many of the pain points of owning a Newtonian telescope have been addressed, and they assert that the Carbon Star 150 should deliver great results from the start. This bold claim has me excited to try it, especially since this is my first Newtonian telescope. It's also the fi...

    Nice comparison and explanation. For a first system, is the C6 with hyperstar too difficult to work with vs say the Askar 103APO with the various reducers? I was looking at the Askar FRA400 with reducer also. Seems the 103 and reducers would give a good range to work with and be easier for a first system, even if more imaging is needed. (That with the ZWO AM5, EAF, guide scope and ASIAir Plus -- too many acronyms). As I don't have many clear nights, the f/2 is very tempting. Could be the difference between using it and not. Particularly if I have to drive an hour each way or more to a dark site without trees. More to think about.

    • @astronotna
      @astronotna 6 дней назад

      Thanks for watching this one! In my opinion only for a first system I think the refractor will be the simplest. You just put it on your mount and focus it. Your photos will always have the same photographic quality since the human factor of collamating is not required. When you are just beginning you are trying to master so many things. I think with the added learning of collimating an SCT can be quite complicated. Not to mention specialized filters that only an f2 system can take advantage of. With a fast refractor you can invest in filters and use them on many systems. You can even use a dslr or mirror less camera if you like. You cannot do this with a C6 hypertstar. I do however think a c6 hyperstar is a great second scope because by that time you would have mastered software, focusing, platesolving, polar alignment, auto guiding and imaging itself. Hyperstar pulls in so much signal its ridiculous. It's not impossible to start out with an SCT I know people that have but give yourself some extra patience with it. F4 is plenty fast and I also have limited time as well. When I want an easy night of imaging I always reach for my refractor. Hope this helps and you can always hit me up on instagram!

    I like the nuanced aspects you mention. Helps to understand more about this hobby. The sky maps show I'm in a Bortle 4 area with a sliver of 3 just up the road. Orherwise may have to go an hour to get to a 2 (ish) and then 3 to 4 hours for better dark skies with fewer clouds so planning is essential. If I had fewer trees I could better justify getting a rig if not for all the overcast nights. All the details about the sky condition and rig is informative. Thanks!

    I have that same rotator on my 8" EdgeHD. I've considered an electronic one (like the Pegasus) but just isn't worth the expense to me. Everything is threaded on my setup, so a rotator was necessary. On my SharpStar 15028HNT, there's a rotator built right into the focuser. Again, the entire imaging train is threaded/bolted. You're definitely more adventurous than I am regarding imaging. If I'd seen those conditions, I wouldn't have setup. Then again, the trip to my imaging location is from the garage to the end of the driveway :). I actually use an AstroZap flexible dew shield for my newt. I already had it for my 8" EdgeHD, and all I needed to do was apply another velcro strip to make it fit the 6" newt. Serves a couple of purposes... first is dew prevention. Second is to keep the stray light out as much as possible. It's one thing I don't like about the SS design: no internal baffles, so it's extremely susceptible to stray light reflections.

    • @astronotna
      @astronotna 8 дней назад

      Man that would be amazing! Perhaps someday I will be able to do that!! Yea I try to take advantage of every night I can right now. Perhaps I should test scopes during the spring lol! Although it will be interesting to see if cold weather will affect collimation.

      @ it’s convenient but has drawbacks. I have a pretty limited view of the sky only able to image to the west and north, which is unfortunately where the biggest light pollution is. Congrats on the new Newt. In the 70's I ground and built about a dozen Newts up to 12.5". I'm just getting back into the hobby and found everything had changed. It now all refractors, photographic and electronics; it's a different experience. People seem to be afraid of Newts and 'collimation'; I hardly gave it a thought back when, it just wasn't that hard to do (or that critical to be perfect). IDK, I understand Newts tend to be bulkier, but weight wise I bet they're lighter per inch. Hopefully there will be a renaissance for them as nothing substitutes for aperture. Have fun and keep us apprised.

    Not bad at all for an out-of-the-box experience. Definitely far less fiddly than the SharpStar 15028HNT I own. You put a pretty decent load on that focuser, too with the 071 and filter wheel. Did you have to really crank down on the tension screw to keep it from slipping or was it a non factor?

      @astronotna 20 дней назад

      Great question. I am definitely trying to flex the focuser here. When i installed my EAf I saw the focuser did not move so I tighten it to the point where the EAF was able to move it and maybe 2 quarter turns more.

    To control dew on a reflector, I have seen others on YT make a diy dew shield from a neoprene type gym mat with sewn on Velcro. I can’t speak from experience though. Great vid as always. Watch out for stray soccer balls in the parking lot.

    Carbonstar engineered the 150 around the 1 inch and micro 4/3 sensor. How was the apsc? Any vignetting?

    • @astronotna
      @astronotna 20 дней назад

      Yes and it appears the info on the field illumination chart was accurate. It's very minimal so no issues there. Flats calibrated it out. 4/3 and under probably won't even see it.

    Another great video showing a ver good scope. Lucky you. But as you tried in the past the Askar 103 APO, which one, Askar or this one, is better for you ? I have the impression that the Askar optic is quite better as you gives round stars all around the edges from the beggining. It would be very interesting to compare both of them for optic proposes. Take care.

    There are specific dew heaters you can obtain for a secondary, Also a dew cap will assist as well

    This is a great min pc for a grab and go rig. I've been using one for twelve months. At first I used it with an f2 135 mm lens ancd a DSLR and then with a Red Cat51 and An ASI585MC Pro camera both rigs also had an EAF installed and I use either a Star Adventurer GTi or a Wave 100i mount. I leave my rif set up and can be outside imaging within five minutes. I have my ASIair mini mounted on the OTA, which hZ given virtually no trouble. One thing though, you need a seperate 12v 5A supply if you are using a cooled astronomy camera, ZWO do not recommend using the ASIair mini for this as it power output is only rated up to 3A

    Thanks! I ordered the mount AND the ADM Saddle Upgrade! Who just jams a screw thread into the dovetail? At 15% of the price of the whole mount, the ADM adapter seems pricey, but I'm sure my dovetail will thank me! And, THANK YOU!!

      Congrats on your purchase!! That's pretty exciting! It is a bit pricey but it was worth it to me not to worry about marring up my nice dovetails! I hope you get to enjoy it soon and clear skies!

      Thanks@@astronotna ! It arrived. It did seem a little weird for a small piece of aluminum to cost 15% of the whole elaborate mount... however... it's a very nice piece. Solid, mechanically sound, and pleasing to use. A far cry from the underwhelming stock dovetail mounting plate. This is my first telescope and first mount, so I'm currently wrestling with the vagaries of the Star Adventurer GTi, equatorial mounts, star finding etc. I live in light polluted Los Angeles, although I did get an Astronomik UHC filter, so I'll see how that works. And perhaps I'll take a car camping trip out to Joshua Tree National Park next weekend and see what I can do there. So much to learn! And, no doubt, accessories to buy. Thanks so much for your helpful videos!
