We lost power for 8 days and water for 5 days during the freeze in Texas. Because we live in a coastal community, over the years with each hurricane and storm I learned from them each year. First power essential items only. When I heard the warnings about the ice storm a week prior, I made it my priority to buy fuel had over 100 gallons including the vehicles that were topped off. I used a power bank or solar generator for my cpaps. Running the fridge no problem as it was freezing outside. Water I had prepared already 100 gallons for drinking and cooking and had filled up two bathtub bladders for I filled with water for flushing. After the freeze I converted my 2 Honda generators to propane. Propane does not go bad so now I have a couple of hundred pounds of it. I don't fight the lines at the gas pump because those too are affected by power outages. I bought more solar generators this way they can power my fridge and freezer in the garage. and just need a couple of solar panels to charge them every day and keep them topped off. On cloudy days I run the Honda generator for no more than 3 hours to charge my solar generators and my solar generators will run my fridge/freezer overnight for 14 to 15 hours straight. Canned and dry goods are always stored even for the dumb neighbors that are too stupid to think ahead. There is a you tube video that shows you how to build a 51.2V portable hand truck power bank. I build it for under $2300 including tax and shipping. That could run your freezer as the inverter can output 3000 watts. You can worry about solar panels later and use your generator to charge it in a couple of hours. The guy's name on you tube is Will Prowse , he knows his stuff. Good luck, my prayers to all of you up there. DIY your own power bank with lithium batteries and use your generator to charge your power bank about 3 hours a day only and conserve gasoline.

I know that this video is from three months ago. We had the same problem with the chickens eating eggs. We actually purchased the best nest, rollaway nesting box for 250. Then our girls got smart. The ones that were eating the eggs, were laying the eggs on the ground, while everybody else was laying in the nesting box. I haven’t watched any of your other videos because I saw this one, but did you find this happening over the last three months?

Yep, our longest in Westlake Ohio was 3 hours short of 5 days without power in August 2024, but luckily since we've always had power outages since we moved here in 1978, we've had at least one generator. But on August 14th, 2003 we experienced the Great Blackout, where everyone all around lake Erie including Toronto,Canada lost power for at least 8 hours, so even the gas stations didn't have gas for sale, so now I store 20 gallons of ethanol free gas at my residence. And at that time Cleveland Public Water did not have working back up diesel generators for everyone who uses Cleveland water and they said on the local news that we were 8 hours away from not having any water at the tap because of that! Now I also store and use by rotation, at least 35 gallons of distilled store bought water.

A well bucket is old school and it may live for decades hanging on the shed wall unneeded, but that or a backup hand pump gives you dependable water! Also many fuel dealers will loan 500 or 1000 gallon tanks to you as long as you buy fuel from them. Keeping ethanol free fuel on site helps in many ways!

Live in Florida and always surprised at how many people are totally unprepared. During hurricane Matthew my neighbor did not have a match to light a candle. In a country-setting family and friends are more important than living in a suburb. I helped many of my neighbors during different situations, but when I needed help, they did not know who I was. I quit having empathy or sympathy for my close neighbors. I watch how they spend their money while not investing in anything for emergencies. I am not helping my neighbors anymore, because they do not meet any definition of neighbor. If you feel I am uncaring I am not, I am tired of caring. An example my neighbor could not afford her electric bill, but had her nails done for $70 then asked me to borrow $200 by using her grandchild as a sympathy ploy. She already owed me $250. Somehow she got her power back on and the next night her house was lighted with very exotic Christmas lights. A life or death situation is a different scenario, but I am done caring. Just went through Helene with not much damage, but learned that I need to keep emergency items more organized and available. Have a friend who had damage in the country she was without power for a week. She lost her freezer, and refrigerator, did not have enough gas to drive anywhere. It was also hot and she suffered. I asked what did you learn from your experience and what would you do different, she replied, "Nothing." Love the video and my God bless you and your family.

If you get the proper filters, you can filter the water from the rain catchment system to drink. Also you don’t need to power the fridge 24 x 7. You can run the fridges a few times during the day to keep them cold. That will save on gas.

Sorry for all your problems I am not an eco warrier, however if I lived where you are I would have a decent size solar system and a battery back up. As you are in the US I would suggest EnPhase as they are a quality US company You could have a large solar system tied to a battery storage and this would run your freezers. Many systems also allow you to charge the battery with a generator- if you had this type of battery (without solar) now you could run the generator to top the battery and then switch the genny off (saving lots of fuel) Enphase do micro inverters and these are good if a solar panel goes faulty- traditional solar systems are like batteries - that are in series- and if one fails then the lot will stop working. With enphase if a panel is damaged by debris or just fails then the system locks that one panel out and the rest keep going Just to add more, I noticed you have a chain saw, it may be an idea to get a battery one as a backup if there is no fuel (this ties in with my bit above) Also- Dewalt do really good LED torches which last a long time.

Or how he refused to declare western states' wildfires as disaster zones for a while?? Do you have a turnaround area for vehicles just beyond your speed limit signs?? Most of the human aid in disasters is dependent upon local & state aid. The Federal aid fixes the infrastructure -- roads, schools, hospitals, buildings & then residences... Generator size is very important. A lot of people go out and get a big-honkin' generator that is double or triple what they really need, and all they're doing is wasting gas. I'm in the mid-west, and when Ike came up out of the gulf in '08, we were out for two weeks. While we didn't have the water damage of Helene, our trees in this area aren't rooted to handle that kind of sustained wind, and it was pretty bad... taught us a lot.

  • @dropshot1967

Ideas for power. Get a duel fuel or propane generator and a big propane tank. Propane does not go bad, and can be used for hot water and heat. A big tank could be enough to generate power for prolonged periods. I have seen off grid channels, like "red poppy ranch" that combine solar and a propane generator, to live with all modern amenities. Their two propane tanks are enough for two/three years of use. A second option to make more effective use of your generator is to get a home battery system or solar generators. These can be charged by solar or your generator, running it closer to its optimum range after which the batteries can take over your power supply, reducing fuel use and noise. The last can be especially useful at night. I hope you and the family stay safe and get through the aftermath of Helene OK.

One of the things that I have learned for more remote living is have a large propane tank and duel fuel generator. Most remote residences will have a propane tank because they are not on Natural gas and propane easily stores in the tank. You potentially have hundreds of gallons of propane for your use. Also I have found Solar+Storage to be also important. Even if it is something smaller like a eco-flow with some portable solar panels or a whole home backup system. It can save you money every day on your electrical bills but allows you to essentially run off-grid if you have batteries with your solar. Bonus points if your inverters also have a generator input so you can if necessary charge your batteries using generator power. Stay safe and prayers for your family and your neighbors.

Good work! I'm still in the cleaning phase, and now that the burn ban has been lifted, I'm gonna have to get back at it. One giant tree fell, so I'll have to have someone come in to deal with that, but small potatoes compared to what so many others are dealing with. One thing I recommend for everyone working around the homestead is a copy of the Ashley Book of Knots. While the title can be a little misleading, the value of this grand tome is well worth the cost. We often forget that our ancestors used ropes and pulleys to build the world, and it wasn't that long ago. Mr.Ashley documented things from a time when string, twine, and rope were commonplace, used for all manner of things. It's an addictive thing once you get into it, but "learning the ropes" has benefited me tremendously around the home.

There are a couple of things you can do to help. Get some solar capabilities. A solar generator, some 300-400 watt solar panels, and a couple of 22v lifepo4 batteries will help keep freezers, lights, and fans running. Have at least 2 generators. That beast you have uses a lot of fuel, so get yourself a smaller genny. Get a dual fuel generator. Keep a minimum of 25 gallons of gasoline on hand. Just run it through your mowers, UTVs, and vehicles every month to keep it fresh. Either get a 250-gallon propane tank or several 20-30 pound tanks. Propane lasts indefinitely, stores easily, and most hardware or farm stores carry it. We have a large genny like yours and rarely use it. We have a Predator 5k dual-fuel, and a Honda 2k generator. We can run all our 120v circuits in the house with the Predator and a 20 pound tank will run for about 18 hours. The Honda isn't very powerful, but it sips fuel and we can use it to run all our freezers. I don't walk out to feed the pigs without carrying. I'm 63 and have never needed my carry gun, and I hope I never do. We are on city water, but we keep 10 cases of Walmart bottled water on hand and just rotate through it. We have a pond so we can water livestock, or use buckets to flush toilets. We have an RV so we can take got showers. Helene was supposed to hit us, but it stayed about 70 miles east and our power never flickered. We dodged a big bullet and it looks like you caught it. God Bless and good luck to y'all.

100% on the Community. That was the Top Thing that really hit me hard because it was the one thing I just didn't have. I've always been a fairly solitary person, even when I'm standing in a room full of people, so when the power went out, I sat at the house for 8 days without a single soul coming by to check on me. Sure, I have lots of "bar buddies" and people I know in town, but they aren't friends. In the 8 days I was without power here, I could sit on the front porch all day long and just have myself for company. When I drove around to see the true scale of the damage in my area, I saw a ton of people working together, hanging out with each other, and it only really drove home how I'd failed to build any kind of community around myself. It's a weird thing to realize because I generally enjoy being alone, having quiet in my world so I can deal with my own demons in peace. 2nd Lesson learned -- you cannot have enough oil lamps. Those things proved their worth a thousand times over as everyone was scrambling to buy up all the batteries and such. Everything but my Surefire light was ruined by batteries I left in them too long. But my oil lamps worked perfectly even though they'd sat on the shelf for a year or more since the last winter when power went out. While even the pretty decorative oil lamps worked well, and I really like them just for the decor, the winners were the Feuerhand 276 hurricane lanterns. Bright, portable, and just all around fun, these lanterns made life a whole lot better in every way, and I never had to worry about running out of fuel for them because they used so little. The only thing I would have really liked to have was a small AM/FM radio that would have provided me with a tiny bit of distraction and background noise. I wasn't too worried about the state of affairs around the area because that was out of my control, but it would have been nice just to know what was happening and maybe listen to a show or two if such things exist. Finding a quality radio, though, is beyond me. I don't know that they make any that would take a CR123 battery. Last Lesson -- Relying on propane this or gasoline that.... nothing but trouble in the end, especially if it means seeking donations and charity. We need to start thinking about the old ways of doing things. My chainsaw was stove up from sitting unused for better than a year, but my axe still works fine. A rocket stove like Chaisson Smoke makes is far better than a propane-fired heater and grill because you don't have to rely on outside sources for the fuel. Those rocket stoves burn scrap wood, something that's easy to find, and give you a sense of freedom and independence that you can't get with propane heaters and grills. While you might still need the petroleum products, having a wood-fired stove means that your petroleum supply can stretch further. Same for the chainsaw. Mine's down exactly when I need it the most. Reaching for the axe that I knew would work got me to thinking about the benefits of a One-Man Crosscut Saw like Lynx still makes. Sure, it's not as fast as a chainsaw, but it runs on breakfast and will still be running when the chainsaws have long since died. Watching the mule trains being utilized to get supplies back in to the worst hit areas has really driven this point home in my mind. Old Tech. The old ways of doing things. They have worked for the last thousand years, and half the reason folks are suffering now is because we've embraced the "convenience" of having a store just a few minutes down the road.

I live in Western Massachusetts, and about 12 yrs. ago we had a blizzard on Halloween that dropped over 30 inches of wet snow and we lost power for about a week. It was shortly after that we got a generator. I have used it at least 20 times since then. I don't consider the sound of my gen. as "noise" ,it sounds like a "purrrr" to me. I would not be without one now. The bigger the better. BTW, please wire your gen. directly to your breaker panel don't use a "suicide cord" plugged into your dryer. Mike from Mass.

Survived Maria, 45 days with no power and intermittent afterwards. Learned a smaller generator worked best, specially while trying to preserve gasoline. A 5000 watt gen would use 5 to 10 gallons a day. A 3000 watt inv generator would run for about 12 hrs with 3 gallons of fuel. Hope all goes well to you, your family and your neighborhood.
