Secrets of EMOTIONAL SYNTH PADS (Twin Peaks, Roland JX-8P)
How was the amazing synthesiser sound used for "Laura's Theme" in Twin Peaks created? Why does it evoke such strong emotions and nostalgia? In this video, I interview an expert on music and emotion, exploring topics like sadness in music and musical nostalgia. I also delve into the "soundtrack" patch on the Roland JX-8P, analysing its unique qualities compared to other synth pads.
Next, I recreate this sound using the affordable Behringer DeepMind 12 synthesizer. Using what I've learned, I perform my own interpretation of "Laura's Theme" with budget synthesizers and a three-octave keyboard. Can I capture the same emotional impact?
Finally, I share why I’m passionate about 12-inch records-sp...

    Great vid. I grew up in the 80s and never had nostalgia back then for any other time period. I def have it these days remembering back. Sadly we live in a world today where nothing new and revolutionary is occuring like how music was evolving in the 80s. Something is seriously lacking in todays music. We have to the most tools ever right in our home computer for music creation and yet we have very lackluster music being created. You should do a vid on how these pads were used by jan hammer in miami vice. He used that pad sound a lot maybe with a bit more resonance and opening the filter a bit more,, he used those low single low sustaining stabs.

    Great video. Very well spoken and emotional. The DeepMind may be a cheap synth (especially in comparison to overpriced vintage synths) but it actually hits way above his weight class. I totally agree about the vinyl experience, you would read the sleeve notes and look at the artwork on the bus home, so were already immersed before even playing the music. The album was consumed in its entirety as the artist intended, and it really meant something. I miss that experience.

    You can even if the DM12 soundtrack replica is missing a lot of that special JX8P tone. I think you can get closer if you add a little bit of resonance on the DM12. But it's not the sound only, it's the composition and how it's played. You did this with the same amount of emotions as in the original.

      That's very kind, thank you! I have both vinyls and CDs. To me, the most important thing about them, isn't the looking at the artwork, but the "ritual" of having to get out a physical medium, put it on the turntable or into the CD-player, and turn it on. You've commited to listen to THAT album. If you're suddenly unsure if it's what you wanted to listen to after all, there's a certain minimum of work required to swap music, so you end up actually listening to the whole thing anyway, and usually, it turns out it was the right thing after all. And inside the cover, there's usually information about who plays what on which track, or where it was recorded and who did the mixing and mastering etc. All this gives you a more intimate insight and deeper connection to the music.

    • @DistortThePreamp
      @DistortThePreamp 15 часов назад

    I think resampling could play a big part of this too, so play and record a held C, then bounce out the audio with fx. And then play it back as a chord. Low notes take longer to play through and higher notes end quicker. That creates a lot of movement. You could then resample the chord e.g. C minor 7, and play that on the keyboard in parallel harmony 😮

    i never chose to buy cd if i could afford and find the vinyl. That was since the 80's and also in the 90's. I said in the 2010's at a huge multimedia shop, that cd's are dead when they wanted to sell me a cd but i asked for the vinyl. Boy was i right. And i had no idea it would come so fast. I still buy vinyl. If i buy a cd, i don't even unpack it, it's just to support the artist. Atm i'm playing a record - stop it and go on searching for a melody for this track i'm working on. It works a lot better then spotify. Because if i lift the arm, and drop it, it's there. And i can focus on it 100% - spotify just makes me read and wonder off. I still have a technics SLP 1200 cd player that needs repair. It just does not motivate me to have it fixed. If it was my only turntable, it would have been fixed or replaced first thing. But indeed, even cd's are a flashback. I just don't bother to play them, but i'm not selling any ever. BTW i think twin peaks made Moby famous. And yes i remember humming that song in the record store and buying the 12 inch, perfect. That was in 1991

    My heart skipped a beat when I saw the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It's always held a special place for me for exactly the reasons you've discussed. A beautiful performance by you too. Also, adding to what you said about Vinyl, so many times when I was younger, I would buy an Album based purely on the release of 1 single or just because I loved the artwork. Sometimes, I found the album not entirely to my taste, but, because I'd bought it, I'd persevere with it, try to hear what the artist could hear. Not all of them, but most of those albums are now the most treasured items I own. Like you said, I would just skip it now and never hear it again.

      Haha! Yes, they really don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Roland had such incredibly good sound designers. One of the things that’s missing from the modern clones is that, although they are perfectly good instruments, the factory patches are hilariously awful. On the one hand it doesn’t matter because I’m a huge fan of making my own sounds. But on the other hand, I’m not sure I would have stumbled across setting the filter attack to 30s…

    Word on paging through records. So much better than CDs in every way. Vinyl provided so much, the band extended the message, explained their intention through the artwork. And vinyl covers smell like books. bring back 12 inches of cardboard. Incidentally it was possible to make a cardboard CD cover that imitated the vinyl feel and contained no plastic, Verve did a reissue of Sonny Stitt "Only the Blues" entirely in cardboard including inside where you slide the CD in a sleeve. It replicated that legendary sleeve style from back in the days, complete with the moody matte photography of the 60s and 70s jazz records. I used to think why don't they make all CDs like that.
