Unveiling Da Funk (Daft Punk) Secrets: Behringer Pro-1 Demo
Back in the early 90s when i was studying audio engineering one of my teachers told me: record your drums by hand and loop or copy paste each 4 measures, but do not quantize. Or you can quantize the kick but do not qualitize anything else... duplicate and loop but do not quantize, you need those harmonics around so it can sound organic.
@@DF-eg8vl This is exactly right. Very good approach!
Photos instead of patch diagrams! Revelatory! I've been adding colour and visible lines on knobs etc for a while as it is so irksome to have knobs with hard to read markings on them or knobs that are the same colour as the case etc. Very helpful essay - thanks!
Amazing. I thought they were codes for checking the alignment and calibration of the color of plates in printing, like the row of colored squares on boxes. Served no purpose for a black sleeve, so were added as a design choice.
Hey Man this was soooo cool and 1000 fun to watch! I bought mine back in 83! I just looked it up.. mine has grey circles for the 'space' wher yours got black.. Needless to say he is getting a record player for Christmas and I'm gonna wax nostalgia going through them all with him soon.

Have a look at the “Human” vst by Mixed in Key . I enjoy setting instrument part variations in my DAW (+ or -) 5-7ms per drum instrument part and then add Human to get the variation in timing. Saves a ton of headroom and adds that secret sauce to keep your ears interested.
I tend to copy a really nice random arpeggio by ear into my sequencer and then transpose the sequence of the arpeggio there so I have much more control of it

Wow. amazing sounds and techniques. You make it look easy. But then again it's obvious it takes years to reach this level of familiarity and knowledge. Plus a musical feeling and compositional ability.
Thank you!
Wait but what was the extra box? The one that you originally thought was a printing error. What what was that one?
Ah - Saville confirmed to me that that was supposed to represent a “void space”. No explanation as to why a void space would be needed 😂
I love Duran Duran, early, and then I discovered Japan, which didn't have any airplay where I lived, and have found they inspired Duran Duran. I did found out that David Sylvian lived a town over from me in New Hampshire a few decades ago. Mick Karn, the bass player for Japan was one in a million.
Karn was certainly one in a million. Duran were obviously much more popular, but I would say that Quiet Life was the first New Romantic album, and Nick Rhodes was obviously totally obsessed with Sylvian!

Late to the party as usual as I’ve been relishing my way through your current YT-gems (mouthing a big THANK YOU silently and cursing you for causing a resurgence of GAS), and was expecting nothing but a new masterpiece… Since video one I’ve been trying to put a name tothe face. Hint dropped at 3:50 and my money was on Connor or Philip as you don’t seem like a Gianni to me. I’d found 8 others so far but to me those didn’t yet fit the portrait. The coded letter ends as described but I hadn’t seen the expected cypher in the first sentence. Started to decode the cypher. DAMN! Dear Name Redacted, …. I always hear a bit Of OMD in your compositions.
I’ll def take that as a huge compliment!
@DistortThePreamp Absolutely. Love the channel by the way. I was born in 1965 so the eighties were my teen & clubbing years, I was in Sheffield when the Leadmill was the place. Heaven 17, ABC, Human League were on the rise. I saw Depeche Mode live at Sheffield poly in 1981 before Vincent Clarke left (kajagoogoo supporting).Just so different & raw. OMD & Kraftwerk changed my musical life. The eighties was the decade that changed music forever. I hope you do episodes on OMD, H17, Kraftwerk & of course The Art of Noise (still remember the chills hearing Close to the edit for the 1st time). Lastly don't forget The The, Soul Mining is a classic of such magnitude it's hard to describe. Edit: Saw OMD live at the city hall, Sheffield in July 14th 1985. Amazing performance & superb live. (Andy's famous dance moves 😂).
@ oh amazing. I’ve got an episode in production about OMD but it’s taking a long time. Though I’ve interviewed their producer (of Ebola Gay, Souvenir, etc). And I’ve hit a vague plan to talk to Roli Mosimann who did Infected. Though I’m obviously a huge fan of Soul Mining. So many videos to make, so little time…

Ah yes! I was a bit sceptical having actually reversed the beginning and listening, but I’m 100% certain that’s what happened in the studio even if not all of that process was used… (which the band would not have been told)

I can’t replicate the results. For my first experiment I used Reaper's “Dynamic Split Item” feature to split up the transients by threshold on a recording straight out of my RX5. It was accurate to within 50 samples. Not satisfied, I tried manually, with a similar result. Then I thought about how the 606 has a reputation for inaccuracy so I recorded some of my Behringer RD-6, amazingly it was even more precise. Here are the results in milliseconds I got by manually slicing at the sample level. For the RX5: 0:00.249 0:00.248 0:00.249 0:00.249 0:00.248 For the RD-6: 0:00.344 0:00.344 0:00.344 0:00.344 0:00.344 That’s right, the inaccuracies can’t even be measured in milliseconds with me doing manual slicing. Am I misreading the Reaper figures, are they not milliseconds? I’m so confused.
Also, weren't they all synched to an SMPTE track on the tape machine? Wouldn't that do more to account for drift than anything to do with the clock in the drum machine?
@@replaceablehead Yes, that might account for some drift in overall time, but not changes in alignment between hits.
I just re bought this last week and always wondered why those colours were on the sleeve and why the b side the beach is actually the A side. I think you have just qualified this single to one of the most sought after singles ever with your video. Wow this is amazing
@@Yourtruthmightnotbemine So pleased! Did you buy it last week before this video? Was it a coincidence?
@ I already had a original copy that had the cut outs in the sleeve but I think I may have sold it but this video comes a week after reaquiring it as i am currently getting more information about the classics and then buying and playing them in my sets. I’ve been collecting a lot of early electronic 80’s singles like Georgia moroder, space, yellow magic orchestra and cerrone. Really love the early disco /Electronic 70’s -80s music. It’s the basis of EVERYTHING that electronic music uses to day
What amazes me most is how you managed to do all of this video in reverse just so it looked like you can do a Rubik's cube. Hat tipped.
@@paulc7798 😂😂😂
I tried measuring my Yamaha RX5 in reaper, it's accurate to within 50 samples at 44.1 kHz. I also saw an interview with Roger Linn where he said the groove in his drum machines is a myth and they are dead accurate, although the MPC does have swing. From what I'm reading only 606, and 808 have any drift and obviously the older Roland boxes from the 70s. What I want to know is when people were using things like the BBC/UMI sequencer what was setting the clock? And further, how often did midi jitter come into play?
Fairly sure that synth sound is the same used by Foreigner in I Want To Know What Love Is. And probably a lot of other songs. 🙂 Cheap Poly Synth?? The Deepmind still goes for over $600!! While I realize that's nowhere near the 'deep end' of synth prices, it can't be considered 'cheap'.
We need that list of 1982 songs 0:47
Wow, is this the Bob Ross for modular? You sound so relaxed while you are talking 😊
As a beginner to making synth music I learned more in 20 minutes from this than I don't know how many months prior. Thank you. (And I'm old enough to remember all the songs you mention the first time around too.)
@@ML-ss4yo fantastic! This makes me very happy!
Surely those timing errors are trivial to program into a modern DAW to recreate that 80s sound? Also, some audio examples to listen to would have been nice. I've seen your reply to someone else saying you're thinking of remaking this video with some samples, so looking forward to that.
Science! Thank you 🙏

I keep waiting for your channel to turn bad because it's too good to be true. Very cool video.
Thank you so much! It’s taking me far too long to get videos out so somethings got to give, but I’m trying very hard to keep the quality up!!!
@@DistortThePreamp Well I don't know much about RUclips, but I feel the quality over quantity concept is pretty rare. Seems like a good way for someone to stand out. If a channel did quality over quantity could they win the long game? I don't know, but I wonder if it's possible. I made a promise to someone today to have my first video out on Jan 30th. So maybe we can find out?
@ oh fantastic! I will diarise to nag you!
I tend to lean more towards Joy Division but I do love New Oerder.
Well no argument there!
I actually found the higher notes of this theme more disturbing in the series. Conjuring up the feeling of exploitation that reflects the American phenomena of kids dress up/dance competitions in the southern states. Strange that...
It’s really powerful music. When I was rehearsing it I found that it worked on almost any sound - it’s just *very* well written…
Drill rap.. 😂😢😅 They have so much to learn
Uh huh ;) No arg.
my tiny mind is blown. I was always thinking that the studio trickery on those pads was a mixture of arpeggio and multi takes, watching you create the 80"s hits live is bonkers, I need a lay down. I am now going to use this technique on my guitar drones (I use a TC electronics E bow), which I have in stereo though the strymon big sky, and eventide space and then eventide time factor to stereo amps. I loop these and then create synth textures over the top. I create ambient music live but this technique will be bonkers I think.
So awesome! I didn’t know TC Electronics made an Ebow! I’ve just looked it up. This is useful because my original Ebow has mysteriously stopped working. Speaking of drones, you’ve seen my drones video right? I love the Big Sky - I had one but sold it because I really wanted it to be racked mounted. I regret my choices. The technique you mention will indeed be bonkers - you’re talking about triggered gates over a huge ambient sound, right? I can tell first hand that it sounds amazing.
@@DistortThePreamp thank the whole strymon thing about not being rack mounted is a mixed trick, especially if they combined pedals. I had an eventide h3000 mounted in a rack with a Marshall pre amp into a Marshall power amp into stereo speakers, it was huge. But got the floor pedal bug and sold it all.....yes I know a complete twat. I did some art shows for a chap who wanted live ambient music at his shows and that was it for me I was hooked. I've been looking at the dreaded eBay for the DS201 there is a couple for £150, I've made a couple of bids. I have a couple of dBX 266A's so will give that a go in the meantime, sadly not midi enabled. I was thinking if I could modulate the side chain it will either make everyone sick with the out of phase over stereo or be mad good.
Captivating.
@@shaun2055 thank you so much!
Great. Everything here is just great. I just thought sometimes bass had a little distortion but never knew people went to such lengths to produce interesting bass sounds be it conventional or synth bass. This was a revelation. It explains the inimitable sounds of so many records. I think you might be interested in hearing what Carpenter Brut has done with his synth music. Try "EPIII" from him there are 4 or 5 tracks there, including the great hit "Turbo Killer" although my personal favourite is "Division Ruine". The sounds are multi-layered, the arrangements very rich, and the harmony innovative and original. The aggression might scrape your ears initially but if you sink into the ambience of the sounds you'll see there is an exceptional degree of sound layering and sophistication. This guy just blows me away every time I listen to his work.
@@MotoMarios Fantastic - I will check it out!
I guessed correctly from the first 20 seconds which one it would be. I will be getting my Behringer Pro One tomorrow at a cost including VAT & Delivery in the UK for £159.00. I looked for used but at that price it is a no brainer. I agree with you 100% about the reasons to buy. The fact that the mono synth can be poly chained to other Behringers like the Neutron, Model D or more Pro Ones makes this a great way to build a super synth when budget permits. Great channel by the way. Subbed.
Oh brilliant! FWIW I have three of the monos - the Pro-1, the Model D, and the Neutron - and although I was really interested in the idea of polychaining before I had them it turns out I’m far more interested in inter-patching. Routinely I patch between them on the front. For example, I might ‘borrow’ and LFO from the Model D and patch it into the Neutron etc. it’s completely cured me of any modular interest too ;)
@@DistortThePreamp That would make a great video.
@ Yes! I made a demo of a video a few months ago about how to make the famous Vox Humana patch using exactly those techniques. You need two oscillators but three LFOs, so I rigged it up on the Neutron borrowing the extra LFOs from the Model D and the Pro-1. It sounded amazing but while I was making it Alex Ball and Starsky made their Vox Humana videos and I ended up concluding the idea had been done, and maybe it was too niche anyway. But I might revisit it.
Just finally got around to trying this out, with the result here: ruclips.net/video/N8dKtgE8wcE/видео.html This is a really interesting technique; the big blast single note effect didn't work as well in this song as I had hoped, so I did something a little more conventional but it worked fine. The only remark I have is that I think this is easier to set up on a guitar with multiple adjustable height saddles; I used a Les Paul and found the fixed radius bridge to be real drawback for getting the slide to press evenly only all six strings; next time I will use a Fender. I gave you a credit with a link to this video in the pinned comment. :-)
Very good. The drone works very well and FWIW I think the rhythm at 1:54 is probably the winning hook. You should make a lot more of that, and the drone. That would sound pretty unusual.
This is one of the most interesting, intelligent and musical videos I have ever seen on youTube. The code as the background music through out the video - brilliant. Have this colourful charset been used elsewhere? Have some of New Orders music included hidden messages when taken nodes and transcript them to letters? Like reversing what you did creating the background music.
Thanks Claus! Yes it has -- Peter Saville used it on a few other Factory releases (apart from New Order records) and even used it on a football scarf!
Can’t this be automated?
you were on my start page when i pulled up YT gl
