Today I'll be giving a super brief video of how I Installed my Lowrance Hook 2 7x fish finder on my 2012 Bass Tracker 175 TXW.
Ascend 128T Kayak Review + Trolling Motor Mod + Trailer Mod

My latest modification to my Ascend 128T kayak has been to add a Pulse Width Modulator to my trolling motor!! It has greatly increased my battery life and kayak range and versatility! The install was super fun and pretty easy! I could not be happier with the PWM. UPDATED 9/26/29 I have been told, and as far as I can determine myself, that the company that was building these PWM's has closed it'...

So my latest project on my Ascend 128T trolling motor fitted kayak has been to add a trolling motor lift system for when I'm in shallow water. I'm SUPER happy with the results, and only spent 'bout 40 bucks!

Are you stil using this setup? I saved this video yrsss ago
Listened right up to the wink wink about pfd... You spend all this money on a custom kayak... spend a few dollars on an auto inflation life jacket that is so unnoticeable YOU WILL ACTUALLY WEAR IT. So the authorities don't have to tell your family you will be fine.. Till they find you (wink)
What would you suggest to use when you can't reach under/inside the kayak therefore unable to use bolts and nuts? Thank you
Install an access hatch. I like using the round, 8inch diameter ones that have a black lid
@@wesjones7260do you think standard screw instead of bolt will be strong enough to hold the mount and motor using your method?
Speedy delivery. Easy installation. Quiet operation. Priced reasonably.
Yah I'm pretty awesome
Thank you, huge help!
I have a 1997 Bass Tracker pro team 18 and it came with the fish finder transducer mounted on port side. It's a old hummingbird wide view. I want to put the Garmin striker vivid 7sv with side imaging. Should I put the transducer on the starboard side or does it not matter? It's a Force 40hp. Thanks for the help.
I realize it's been a few years but your motor install still remains the cleanest, most thought-out design I've seen. Questions: 1) Have you ever made a video of your kayak running with the trolling motor for speed and endurance? 2) You mentioned a move after this video to a 55 lb thrust motor. Did you have to make any changes to accommodate it (e.g., battery, modulator)? 3) Are you still a big fan of the MightyMax battery or has something new come to the market that you've installed (or plan to install)? I sold my Big Fish that I originally mentioned due to its weight (I car-top) and got a Hobie Lynx. The motor options are very expensive (Texas Power Paddle, Bixpy via cassett install, Island Hopper) and there's little, if any, performance increase over the Mirage drive. Anyway, I'm again looking at DIY Minn Kota install.
Now days just running a cheap walmart deep cell and 55lb minn kota. Ditched the pulse width modulators, kept failing on me. MightMaxx is still a badass brand but too good honestly for what I've come to learn a fishing platform needs.
@@wesjones7260 thanks
@@wesjones7260 Yep, the fishing equipment industry seems to have zeroed in onto our imagination. Seems there's a corollary between equipment and the actual fishing; you always have too much of one and not enough of the other. Can of worms and cane pole still work.
@@MrSteve280 true that. Think I might take the setup out today and do some bream fishing
Dude! Yes finally found a good video on this!!! You’re the man. Need to do the same install on my 175
Did you trim the transducer plate?
Sure did, table saw
Thanks for helping me find the screws; the hardest part of the install.
I just used mine last night in a pond first time. mine has no mods at all n it didn't come with a back storage but still was 1k
*I bought this model for my 14 ft Jon boat. **enjoyable.fishing** recommend love it!!! It pushes my boat with ease ( 2 men 220 each). I would highly recommend this to anyone.*
can you list out the electric systems stuff with links if you can
I can’t seem to find the screws around the throttle.
$14 PWM device from Amazon $12 watertight box from a local retailer. Custom links wiring, S $18. Super easy installation. No need for $100 plus device
If u added a second fishfinder would there be room in the fuse panel?
One of the sickest kayak mods I've seen on RUclips. You just got yourself a new sub.
What kind of seat do you have and where did you purchase it?
It came with the kayak. I bought it at Bass Pro shops.
Did you put anything behind the mounting plate or just use the screws?
Hey Wes, love the vids. Is that PWM still working? I read a lot about how they're prone to frying, is it just sealed in a box or is there any cooling system added like a little fan or vent holes? I ordered one and hoping to make it last as long as possible.
Awesome video. Have the same boat and didn't know I could take those sides off. I went yesterday trying to figure out how the hell I was going to get the wires through. And decided to not buy a finder. But now I guess I might. My fuse panel is a little different. My boat is a 2010. Thank you this definitely helped me out.
Glad to help, thx for the comment!
Loosen the 2 motor screws slightly behind the prop and turn the motor on 25% and turn the motor case until you get the most rpm. Its advancing the timing of the motor. Don't tell your buddy!
Wes where did you buy the 30 amp minnkota plug?
Great Job. Thank You!
Great idea. Thanks for responding.
Hi Wes, Nice set up. Is this motor lift system still working for you? Or have you changed it? Was thinking about this set up so I could keep the motor locked and still have reverse. I fish sometimes where there are underwater stumps (we call it the stick-ups). I like the idea of having no lock on motor in case I hit a stump it will pop up, but then you sacrifice your reverse. Also do you notice any noise from where the carabiner is attached to the motor when you are moving? I have a 30lb Minnkota. No gusset to attach the carabiner, so I may have to wrap the line around the motor itself. Do you think that might work. Appreciate you taking the time for the video and sorry about your other Kayak. Also like the set up with the battery and PWM.
Thanks for the comment! No, I don't get any noise from the carabiner I have attached on the motor's gusset. If your motor doesn't have a gusset, not sure if what you're suggesting would work, but I feel like it would work ok-ish. Myself, I'd probably attach a clamp like bracket on the bottom of the trolling shaft and use that as an anchor point.
Just bought a pwm from wireless trolling pro, 2 weeks ago and my credit card was accepted. ??? In their website it doesn’t mention their close???
Maybe they opened back up? Hell, last time I tried the buy one the website wasnt even up any more.. I've since stopped using their product. The first one I bought died after a year, and the 2nd one I bought to replace it was buggy from day 1 and failed a couple weeks later. Was able to get my money back though, which is nice. Now I just build my own PWM's. Total cost is about $30-40 and I overengineer and waterpoof mine.
@@wesjones7260 Really enjoyed your setup! I added a 35# electric motor to my kayak 2 years ago. All DIY, as I enjoy figuring out how to. I went through 2 PWMs...both failed rather quickly.. Could not find a quality unit. Ended up going back to the stock control that came with the motor. I like the motor lift you have. Not sure if I can change mine, since I use a manual steering arm, but will definitely use your pulley technique! I learned something new to upgrade my yak and greatly appreciate the time and effort you put in to show everyone.
I hear a lot of guys talk about pulse-width modulators but no factual evidence that battery lasting longer videos
Google it idiot. There's tons of videos and articles that explain the very basic fundamentals that you seem to need.
The pounds of thrust will not make you go faster. Just gives more thrust to power through current.
That's legit the most idiotic thing I've read this quarter by a large margin.
What would you call those angled grommets or chase pieces where you ran the foot pedal cable through?
Aluminum Ferrule and Stop Set Picked mine up at Lowes 🤙
I will need those aswell but the cable pass through piece you have, where the cable runs through the hull thats what im looking for
Nvm i must be thinking of another video
You Cut and patched your kayak rather than cutting and splicing the cable? Really? Lol
Let's see your motorized kayak setup then dipshit
😂 so simple! Best motor mount (transom) video on RUclips!!! And now to find a motor...
Thanks 😁
Just curious how fast you can scoot along. Im not really trying to be a speed demon but I was looking to setup a yak and doing some striper trolling which is roughly 3 mph. I am really digging this 128T and thinking of ordering one before everything is gone never to be seen again for 10 years!!! Or whenever more stock finally shows up.. Thanks
A few months ago I upgraded to a 55lb thrust motor and was doing a solid 4pmh
@@wesjones7260 Thanks, I was thinking about the NewPort 62 or 86# trolling motor so either should have plenty of power then. Now to just find the control module since wireless guys seem to have vanished.. :(
@@Duhamal I just started building my own. Its pretty easy.
you would be a life saver if you can share the link to that modulator and that fuse box am running a 12 v 46 lbs thrust on my t128, but am trying to change the way i control my motor.
im halfway through my mod and my variable speed switch is not suitable for his project
where can I get the pulse modulator wireless trolling pro you have?
Love this idea thx. I fish the marsh in South Texas and oyster beds are brutal. 😂
Does your graph read at speed
Yes.
that's freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!
I have a question, I havent seen anyone do this yet and maybe it cant be for some reason, but how come you cant use the yak power stern mount plug instead of a separate trailer plug. I'm wanting to use existing power for the 30 thrust. Feel free to call and discuss 405 202 5522
The wires are not the right Gauge for what the Motors need . I tried and almost melted the smaller wires. Yak is good for LED Lights, Stereo, Speakers, Phone Charger, or any low voltage connections
Keith Deal, use Google...
You think this setup is gator proof? I’m comfortable being around them but always good to be safe.
Definitely not.
That's why I always bring my sidearm...ya never know..
Can I fly you to where I live and have you do this to my kayak? Lol I have a feeling if I attempt to put a trolling motor on my kayak, first start in the water I’ll shock myself lol
Possibly, I have quite a few jobs going right now, but if you're seriously interested shoot me another comment or a msg
I am, I have the new 128T and I want to put a trolling motor, I just don’t know anything electrical
How heavy is your rig? Could you drag it across 50yards of grass into a lake?
Definitely not. Its 140lbs with battery and motor LOL
wes jones you should get those wheels for it so you can roll it to the water
@@karen_boomer8603 how many kayaks have you equipped with those that failed? Because I've had several and they're garbage...
wes jones ive never had one I heard they break easy like your saying though
Which “L” brackets are those?
Whichever works best for your setup!
Turn the phone sideways when you film brother.
Negative, I prefer portrait mode, but you're welcome to shoot your videos however ya wish bud!
@@wesjones7260 alright brother
Hey Wes, im trying to find similar pulleys you've got hooked up on the trolling motor bracket to lift it but im having a hard time locating some. Any chance you can hit me up with a name or link to where you got them from? By the way, you've done a great job with the yak. i picked myself up a slightly older model recently that I'm trying to build similarly.
Any brand and size will work. I went with the smallest one Lowe's had cause it was the cheapest and also just happened to fit my paracord perfect.
lmao loved the ending, this is genius thought thank you !
Lol thanks, I'm a dumbass
Great install! How has it been working? Any damage being so low? I’m about to install mine and have no idea where. I see so many different ways. Up top where the cheap factory Lowrance came or down where you have yours. What’s the difference? Thank you and great video
Works perfectly. Down lower is a must. I got bad readings when it was mounted higher up.
wes jones thank you! I have the mounting plate coming tomorrow and sealant. What size screws did you use? I saw where some people used the screws that came with transducer but they were longer than the boards use so they went right in the transom.
@@lipsnatchertv2649 I dont remember the exact size, but shorter fat ones. I pre drilled the hole a bit and added sealant to prevent cracking the board.
wes jones thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Sick! Thanks for sharing, can't wait to build my own..
Thanks broski, tight lines 🤘🤘
Does the PWM come already with the speed control switch?
