My goal is to help create a better quality of life for my viewers by becoming more self reliant and learning how to fix, repair, build, and install things for themselves. My whole life I've been surrounded by people who wish they were more handy. They own homes that they can't repair. They own cars that they can't maintain, let alone repair. They spend piles of money and time covering for their lack of confidence and know how.
I win when I can help someone save some money and build confidence by learning to be handy and do it yourself (DIY). I teach these principles and techniques by creating videos of step by step tutorials about my interest which are home repair, auto mechanics, off-roading, overlanding, glamping, and off-grid living.
Quick disclosure - I am not a professional. I cannot be liable for any damage or injury caused. Also, as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Table Saw Rocket Launcher - A lesson on the power of kickback

I wear a face shield, always
Thanks for posting this. Just replaced it on our door, wasn’t as difficult as I thought.
8 bucks vs your eye 👁️ do the math and see that it is worth to always put glasses on
Appreciate your advice 👍 . I really hope you get your eye checked and working back again. I have a similar experience I was using my chainsaw and the small dust of the wood reached my left eye, even though I was using safety glasses I simply rubbed my eye to get the debris out but that caused a cut in the cornea I noticed i wasn’t able to see by that eye so I had to go to the hospital and they took care of it , after that I gained vision again but that was a lesson learned for me to always carry professional safety glasses 🥽 not cheapy dollar tree glasses .
People who wear prescription glasses often don’t add safety glasses due to the poor fit and added weight. But I’ve heard that if you shop around, you can find safety glasses that you can order with your prescription built in.
I m so sorry man
Thank you for making this video! I really appreciate your concerns for others and sharing what happened to you. I've done the exact same things using my table saw! (Except the injury) I am sharing your video to my work group. We have a monthly staff meeting and include safety. Also, I represent our R&D group in a monthly Global Safety meeting. I have shared your video with my employer's global safety group so it can be seen in China, Germany, Belgium, England, Italy, Brazil, etc, etc! Thank you!
Sometimes on really windy days your fridge will go out and you don't be able to light it so if it's really windy wait until the wind dies down and you should be good!!
Model number Sperry?
Thank you brother, i feel so bad for you. You did not deserve this! Eye sight is precious. I will heed your warnings and advice. Please get well.
Where have you been! I have been searching for safety glasses as I had a similar accident but I was not hurt. The wood hit perfectly between the lens and on the nose piece. The safety glasses shattered in two pieces. The were arnourRX but they were old at least 9 to 10 years. It appeared the plasticseemed to have lost its pliability.anyways I wet on a hunt for a new pair.
I'm looking for some reviews on D5 dust rated safety glasses.
Thanks for teaching us
245 crack that window let oxygen in there. 420 use small c clamp up fron on either side. Leave in place
Exactly what I needed. My unit was clicking. I could smell gas. I took off the covers and could see a spark. All I had to do was increase the distance of the ignitor to create a bigger arc and then unit fired up first time. Thanks!
Josh thanks so much for this video! I've been using my Rx glasses thinking they offered some safety benefit, couldn't be more wrong for sure! I'm going to share this with my optometrist too to help get the word out!
Same problem here. I rewired a gfci on bathroom wall bec it was reading "neutral & hot reversed." But then the bulbs blew out on vanity light & ceiling light. There's 3 wires to the neutral & 3 to hot/black wire on the vanity light fixture. Question: Testing as you did in video I should connect the highest V wire to the black/hot side of the vanity light, regardless of jacket color correct?
I always give props to folks that have an unfortunate accident and use their misfortune to educate others to keep it from happening to them. Thank you for posting this and prayers for a speedy recovery! For the rest, yes this can happen to you, take the advice or not , your choice.
I worked with a guy who took a nail gun nail to the eye and lacerated his eye ball . Eyesight is precious
Kool. Nice medical intervention.
Thanks for the very helpful video. Just a little question, some of my electrical outlets have ground and some don't. For the cases when there's no ground wire, can I run an extension cord from an outlet with with ground and touch the ground with the black probe and then touch one of the wires with the red probe to find hot wire?
Remember you can create a projectile without a motor too. Chiselling and hammering can chip off parts of the material (or parts of the tool!) and send those at high speed in any direction. Likewise for anything that could shatter. Or splatter, we often forget chemical risks. Just wear them all the time really, any time you’re doing “work” or are in an area where “work” is being done. Invest in good ones and keep them clean and in good working order. Like you said, if you feel like they’re making your vision worse then you won’t want to wear them. Stay safe out there all.
Seems like the biggest mistake was letting go of the block while turning off the saw. Had you held it in place I’m certain it wouldn’t have become a projectile. Hopefully you are healed by now as this video is old.
Thanks for sharing your care for everyone. You definitely have my attention. Quote: "Any time there could be a projectile... when you are using a tool with a motor.... drilling, grinding, sanding, sawing wear safety glasses & keep them on your face." You are in my prayers. I'm so sorry for your struggles. In heaven everything will be restored. I'm saving this video everywhere- youtube saves, pocket saves, bookmark, so I have reminder of it everywhere.
Could have been any of us. Accidents happen. Ive been hurt while wearing my PPE. Still unfortunate. I wish u well and we all hope u regain your vision. I dropped a running grinder on my foot that had a diamond cuttoff wheel on it on a steel toe boot. It helped some.
I hope your eye gets better mate. My neighbour smirks when he sees me with safety glasses and hearing protection. It's not a macho look l, but if anything ever goes wrong, I'll have the last laugh.
Thanks for sharing your story. I need to do better.
Man, what a rough time over a moment's negligence! Sorry for what you've gone through. Just wanted to pass along some safety glasses info for those that need a little help with their vision. I've been using safety glasses for years that have the readers in them but they just aren't that great for extended detail work. I have both woodworking and metal working machinery in my shop so there's lots of exposure to hazards. A company called Delta Plus makes full lens diopter safety glasses in a broad range of diopters. I got some in 0.75 diopter for general shop use and 1.0 and 1.5 for finer detail work and reading precision measuring instruments. They're much better for reading that the tiny reader at the bottom of the lens. Amazon and many safety equipment retailers sell them and they're very affordable and Z87 or better rated. I have no affiliation; just wanted to let people know.
I ordered safety glasses while watching this.
Sorry for your accident dude. So so many of the videos like this is due to no riving knife
Thank you for sharing this story, such a great reminder for us all about how the small moment to moment safety decisions we make in our shops can be so much more important than we give them credit.
I trust my prescription glasses too often as "safety" glasses.
I just want to say I'm sorry this happened to you. We ALL have done things in the shop we wish we could go back and change. It makes my me shake my head when I think back how may times I've been very lucky. I've had a few nicks and close very close calls. I hope you get you site back. Thank you for sharing and I truly hope people listen. I truly hope the best for your eye.
Thank you for the timely reminder.
You're awesome. Thanks for sharing your story.
Kickback's are no joke I have been doing wood work mainly cabinetry now for over 25 years and have had a few myself but I have always wore safety glasses the small boards and deep rips are tricky hope you heal up good. Clay from mobile
Thanks for sharing, I used to think my prescription glasses were giving me protection, I learned that I was wrong.
I dont wear glasses or contacts, age 64, but could use something that helps magnify the TINY milimeter markings on the table saw rip fence, but that safety glass outfit seems to offer only prescription glasses.
Thanks for making this video. It does help to heighten safety awareness - which is a good thing - I sent it to the other guys who also working my shop. I am also aware that it takes a fair amount of humility to send something like this - thanks!
I was at a jobsite a few years ago, and a colleague was chipping concrete with a hammer drill. A piece of concrete, about 4cm (1.5") was launched *exactly* towards my eye by the drill at a surprising speed. Fortunately, I was wearing safety glasses, and the piece just **ding** bounced off. Had I not used eye protection, I'm sure that would've been a life changing injury.
NEW FEAR ENGAGED
DAMN THAT SUKS, I CANT IMAGINE JUST HAVING ONE EYE, PROTECT THEM AT ALL COST
Just one question about the lens. Were they plastic or glass? I assume they were plastic, since most nowadays are, but since they are quite flexible they shouldn't just shatter like that. Hope you recover well!
Wow, every wood worker should watch this video. Thanks for sharing it.
People around me get miffed because I always use safety gear. Experience taught me to. Always wear protection, especially on a weekend lol
I had a kickback that spits my thumb so now I never ever make a cut without the blade gaud on, unlike you I have a 14-inch band saw that if I feel it to small for my table saw get cut on the band saw
I am going to tell you how it all changed for me. A long time ago when I worked as a carpenter professionally my girlfriend asked me if I wore safety glasses. Being a dumbass I said sometimes. Her next question was like a hammer to the head. She asked "will you wear them all the time AFTER you lose one eye"? BOOM!
Thanks for sharing! This is the second video I watched from your channel the first one was from the original incident.
The human body is pretty incredible at healing and adapting! I injured my left eye a year ago, but not nearly as bad as you. I ripped the lens open, and had double vison in it for about 6 months. I still see glare around lights and apparently, that eye is more prone to injury in the future.
looks good. now step away from the woodworking tools, you do not have the common sense to safely work with them. sorry I know you are a sensitive guy and cant handle criticism but the truth is evident...you should not be using tools at all with such a stupid mistake as you made.
