Holden Torana gets a dyno run
This engine was built 7 years and 9000km's ago and I've never checked its output. Old school technology was never going to see huge numbers, but I always thought it was good for 300hp at the crank. I forgot to remove the a/c belt which probably stole a few hp too!

The ZL1 gets PPF & Ceramic coating

Yes, the car has such low mileage I had to do the right thing, so the front bar now has PPF and the rest is ceramic coated. The guys provided me with a few video clips during the process, so I put a short vid together.

I upgraded from a 600 to 650dp and it ran so much better that i thought I had fuel injection
Carb to big is a myth , i run a reworked 1050 dominater SBC , 20mpg no flat spots , tunning carbs has advanced since the old days , air fuel gauge tune it were you drive on the Street
I don't disagree with what you're saying although time will tell. I've done a lot of RUclips searching since the dyno and there are a few things I want to check on my carb to hopefully remove the low-down flat spot. Failing that, I've bought a Holley 600 vacuum secondaries which I want to put a kit through and trial that. I forgot that I have a O2 sensor bung in my extractors which I could use to hook up a an AFR monitor gauge which will help too!
Update - I've bought a 600 vacuum secondaries square bore to experiment with. It will be interesting to see if it removes the flat spot, but I don't want to upset the AFR which was excellent when dyno'd.
600 vac second will be perfect for that motor. What I've got on my 308 with similar specs
304ci from vn commodores not 308ci but decent power and sounds great
Cheers, yeah I listed it as a VN Commodore 304 in the beginning of the vid. A lot of people interchange 304 with 308. I think the main difference to the block was no hole for a mechanical fuel pump and the cam wouldn't have the lobe for the fuel pump. Other than that I think it was pretty much the same block.
185hp!
@@DontForgetOldKolobok 285hp, or 286 to be precise (at the wheels)!
285rwhp is pretty healthy and remember it is pushing around a 1200kg car not a 1600kg+ late model
@@Surly34 so true although from memory it was around 1450kg when I got it engineered. Probably that power-sapping lug of a Ford 9 inch diff lol.
Nice car mate!
@@fishingking6337 cheers, much appreciated 👍
11.18 dead hole sounds crank speed? Hope not, nice looking Torana miss my one. Maybe choped a lobe of cam. :)
I went back to listen but couldn't pick it on my phone speaker. Can you give more details of what you are hearing?
@@markgrovenor389 Hello mark, 11: 17 there is a noise (sounds like detonation) but only on one piston, noticeable on second pull but drops off with revs. Maybe just a leak at the header on one cylinder. I had my computer speaker on loud as weekend and few tins. Hopefully all is good
@@desmondwright5463 yeah I can hear what you are referring to, if anything I would say potentially the headers or exhaust as it is the oldest and worst part of the engine. I will keep an ear out when I bring it for another run.
Looks like a Vauxhall.
Lol you will have to let me know which model? The Torana is a well respected part of Holden history but every model has influences from other GM products to some degree....
The HB Torana (the one that nobody talks about) was a rebadged Vauxhall Viva. Subsequent Torana models were an evolution of the HB, and also incorporated GM styling cues so you can see similarities to other GM cars. Same story as the Opel/Vauxhall Rekord and Holden Commodore. The Holden Gemini was a locally manufactured Isuzu Gemini. Great Aussie cars! Unfortunately Australia never got any derivatives of the Opel Ascona or Opel Manta.
Nice to see a non-LS Holden.
Are you not a fan of GM engines? The LS is the pinnacle of pushrod V8s.
@@blairo15 I think it is the fact that everyone is throwing an LS into old Holden's these days. It gives instant hp but you are losing that old school look, sound and feel. There are days I want to throw an LS into mine but then it will lose a certain charm. It's a hard one to decide on.
Where did you get the gauges for your car? Are these from Heath with the Torana hatch?
That’s a dash from Peter Nash I’m betting
@@johnszwede8516Both wrong lol! I first saw the gauges in Simon Reid's hatch (Sydney Torana Club) and bought a set myself. I'm proud to say I designed a casing and wired it to the original cluster plug myself, before seeing any examples from Heath or Peter. I am sure theirs are a cleaner finish (I have since followed both of them and seen their excellent work) although I was happy with what I achieved by myself!
Great looking car. Stance is perfect.
Cool. Nice tori mate. 😎👍
Thanks 👍

@@job7016 cheers, I have to agree 👍

@@sixhunt cheers, they are Speedhut gauges I bought from the U.S. You can choose the style, font and colour so I tried to stay true to the original LX design as much as possible.
Love the Tori mate! Wish I could afford one! ❤🔥🔥🔥
@@eezee187 there's something out there for everyone although I have to admit the value has gone up since I bought mine about 12 years ago! Cheers and thanks for watching 👍
Fantastic car mate. Great numbers. Have to agree with the carby! I’m running a mild 318 in my Chrysler and that’s only got an Edelbrock 500 on it but it performs very well. I’ve often wondered if it would benefit from jumping up to a 600 carby? Dunno 🤷♂️
I run a eddy 600 on my 318. Runs great. No 1/4 mile times yet. Will have them by end of 24
Cheers mate, yep often it is just a case of trial and error. There's a level of adjustment with jets, throttle cams etc although the venturi may just be too big.
@@markgrovenor389 I have not touched the heads on mine yet as they’re very expensive but had had a mild cam installed with all the bolt on goodies. Extractors, exhaust, intake, hei ignition and carby. Goes very well but mine only made 210 at the wheels so perhaps one day I’ll do the heads ? I’ve been told that the biggest let down in the 318 is the pistons but if I’m going to go that far then I may as well keep saving and do a stroker kit? And that of course means engine out again. Don’t know if I can be bothered to be honest. It runs fantastic now so why mess with it. Hmmmm 🤔
@@Tk-ou9ec there's nothing wrong with 210 hp at the wheels. You and I are not looking to win any horsepower hero competitions and after you reach a certain point every extra hp starts to cost more! I may have the advantage of higher compression with the flat top pistons. Regardless, the main thing is you can cruise and enjoy the ride with that old school charm and V8 burble. That's what counts! 😎
@@markgrovenor389 agreed. Love the old school.
what you would expect fpr that combo, congrats on a beautiful build, great street car with plenty of poke to have fun. I can hear all the "1000HP Barra " owners laughing already but they dont own a TORANA LOL
@@71honky lol cheers mate, it isn't always about horsepower! Old school fun when 300hp was plenty until you coughed up for a GM671 blower 😁
sweet ride, took me back to carb days when you pumped the throttle before turning the key.
@@MrPsiclone666 lol yep, something the younger ones wouldn't understand!
Excellent looking Torana
@@jimclarke1108 thanks mate, I love it but don't look too close 😁
What was the torque? That dual plane air gap is beautiful.
382Nm at the wheels. Yes the Edelbrock manifold is still low enough to close the bonnet with the reverse scoop while letting some cool air flow through it!
Nice car mate. Where were the fuel mixtures and did they try different timing settings?
@@chriscarey3625 The afr was perfect through the whole rev range so they didn't need to change anything there. The timing was done a little while ago and there was no pinging although there is always the chance it could improve with a tiny bit more timing.
@@markgrovenor389 stay with the 700. A quadrajet was 720 CFM. Did you do valve springs? A bit strange how it started to fall over at 5 and a 1/2
@@chriscarey3625yep it's got new double valve springs. I have heard the quadrajet flowed in the 700's although I noticed they have much smaller primary venturis compared to the Holley. Also I assume they are a vacuum secondary set up too? The guys couldn't feel the flat spot on the dyno but it's very noticeable on the road at low reva. Maybe a quadrajet is the way to go 🤔
@@chriscarey3625I was also surprised about the power curve dropping off. I posted the description of the am model straight from Crane which suggests it should pull to 6500.... I set the redline warning lights at 5000 for a safe margin, which may have baulked Shane when doing the power runs, although I haven't set the MSD rev limiter and I know I have often brought it over 6500 and it is still pulling strong.
Shes a clean car, Id have to agree with going for a 600. Should improve the drivability.
Cheers, if I can pick one up at a decent price to experiment with I will definitely be trying it.
@@markgrovenor389 Get the 650 double pumper. I had my first LH SLR 5000 torana back in 1977. My brother in law too. I bought my car already cammed and heads with headers. I went from the original quadrajet to a 650 Holley and night and day difference after tuned.
When is the c clamp needed ? is it not needed when I change out only the break pads ?
Hi there, yes you might need to push the cylinders back in if you are replacing worn, thin pads with new thicker ones. Using a C (or G?) clamp is a common method to get the cylinders back in although you may need to unbolt the caliper from the rotor to make room. Alternatively, leave the old inner pad in place and use a screwdriver, chisel or similar to gently pry it back away from the rotor, which will push the cylinders back. Make sure your fluid doesn't overflow from the master cylinder when you do this! I hope that helps!🙂
Awesome with giving the other car too Matt stone racing. It looks like a 2SS the car you gave?
Yes mate, I thought it was going to be my "forever" car, but I guess you should never say never lol. The opportunity came along to buy a near-new ZL1, so I had to do it. Check out my older vids on the 2SS as I did plenty of mods on it before eventually selling it. It had an aftermarket ZL1 1LE front end plus side skirts, 1LE wheels, lowered etc. I loved it!
@@markgrovenor389 yeah it was a nice SS you had but a good story to tell where it went and now racing. I love the ZL1 as well and of course much more speed and kws haha. It’s funny you say that as after sending the comment I went through and watched them all. You’re definitely car savvy and the clear coat looks awesome too on the new Camaro.

Hi Mark, thanks for the videos. I glad that you discussed your thoughts on changing engine oil based on calender life, an issue many of us are facing, weve done around 2000km since last chane, oil looks like new. Where did you purchase the air filter?
Thanks for the feedback, yes oil changes will always be the subject of many opinions. If the car hasn't been used much, condensation will enter the engine block over time and contaminate oil. It won't be much but it is up to you how much you want to look after your pride and joy! Just search for the k&n filter 33-5047 on Google, they should be readily available.
@@markgrovenor389 thanks for the info.
Thank you very much for the video and for the comments, I have a similar problem on my Yamaha Wild Star XV1600A, watching the video and your comments, as well as other people's posts, I have decided that the first thing I will do is clean the solenoid contacts with an electrical contact cleaning fluid, then I will close the solenoid contacts with a screwdriver to make sure the starter motor is in good condition, or not. This way I will know if the problem is the solenoid or the starter motor. Thanks for the video and comments, it has been an excellent help. Good video.
I'm glad I was able to help and thank you for spending the time to comment. Let me know how it goes!

I was gonna ask why didn’t you get a 2023
That’s a right hand drive that was converted by Holden so they are not easy to come by.
@@danielfernandes711 gotcha..
Yeah there were only 350 ZL1's remanufactured in Australia and just a handful of these were done in 2020 before they stopped.

@@markgrovenor389 that’s awesome and yeah lucky it’s not the 1Le version as they’re boosted even more in the kw. Yes, how can you not love these things!
Thanks for the update though Im wondering what your first upgrade might be, would love to see/hear what a Manta exhaust would sound like🤔, Im still loving my 2019 2ss i bought new cant think of anything else id rather have such an experience driving a camaro.
Thanks, yes I want to keep the mods to a minimum with this one, being such a good original example. The first few items that might make a small improvement will be a K&N oiled filter (as I already have it waiting to fit) and a Velossa Tech big mouth cold air induction. This alone will be as good if not better than any aftermarket air box but will remain hidden from view. I have already trimmed the front license plate holder, so it is now slimline and doesn't impact the beautiful front end as much!
how does one know if you have magtec struts?
I'm only guessing but I think mag suspension is limited to ZL1 and 1LE models. We didn't get any 1LE in Australia so I can't confirm. The onscreen options will have suspension settings if you have it.
Hey man congrats on the zl1🥳 saw this car go from a regular SS to the beast you made, will miss it but on to the zl1💪🏽
Thanks heaps! Glad I was able to keep a few people amused. I'll keep looking for things to use as content, the first will be picking up the ZL1!
well done - i reckon you got all the cars that were there when you were filming - you got my 1991 holden apollo - most people i've seen at a car show i've taken my car to - mostly it's just us looking at each others cars
As an American with an 18 SS: 1. Doing this to your Camaro decreases its value. 2. Sounds great...no performance increase whatsoever. 3. The 2019 is the "ugly duckling" already. 4. Having the exhaust sticking out that far betond the valance destroys the intended tapered look of the NPP quad exhaust; which IS a Borla design. I love mods. When they are done to improve the performance or look of the car. This achieves none of those objectives; making the back of the car look like a boy racer trash can muffler equipped Civic. Makes a bunch of noise; but w/o engine tuning produces no horsepower or performance gains. Sorry. I even love your cars color. It is because I love Camaros that I dont see the point. Why didnt you buy a diffuser that would have at least looked nicer? -yank * edited for spelling
Everyone has an opinion and it is fine for them to be different! I wasn't chasing performance gains, just a more unique sound and a unique look. I love the black pipe tips, to go with my black and blue theme. If you have watched all my videos you will see that is the common theme. Replace the ugly duckling front end and have a car that is a little different and (in my opinion) looks better than average! All the best with your car and any mods that you do sir!
@@markgrovenor389 Yes and I was a bit nasty. Sorry about that. The 2019...being a 1 year only design....might be worth the most in 20 year!! I don't hate the front end. Riverside Blue is gorgeous. I had a 2020 V6 in Riverside Blue before I committed to my SS in hot red. I liked the blue a lot more... Again sorry. I see a lot of people make that mod and indeed...your car your choice! Glad we all have choices and can really personalize our rides. Cheers! 🌞 Slava 🇺🇦
Thanks Slava, all good my friend!
My younger brother sent me your video as I was tearing into the wiring. I think you did a great job! Good on ya' sir. 2003 ROAD STAR (XV1600AR). Only just now had an issue with the starter solenoid. Did the proper troubleshoot, battery, fuses etc. Jumped across the two terminals on the solenoid and the motor fired up. New solenoid on order (I went OEM), we'll see in a few days if 'SAS' <--( the bikes nickname) problem is solved. I think I'm always going to keep a jumper wire in the emergency kit from now on.
That's great news! Thanks for the feedback!
@@markgrovenor389 Update. Changed the solenoid, and sure enough that was the issue. I did however, go with an option in case it should go out again. (For Safety) I put more insulation around the already insulated heavy gauge wire I was using as a "jumper". I happened to have one laying around. I then installed the heavy solid gauge jumper wire onto the "M-Side" of the solenoid terminal, and covered the loose end of the jumper with a wire nut. In this way, in an emergency I can remove the cover, un-screw the wire nut, and touch it to the "B-side" terminal to get the bike started. Then, dressed the wire nice and neat around the fuse box, with a small note: "Emergency Solenoid Jumper". More than likely, if the solenoid does go out again, I'll forget the jumper is there until needed to bail me out again. 😎
That sounds like you will be ready for any future problem but hopefully you won't need it! Thanks for providing the follow up!
