The same in many ball sports, it’s the psychology! When I played soccer, if they were fast, I would be slowing to a walking pace near the shooting areas, and they were all slowing down and started yelling like pass it, what are you doing man? That was when I got them off guard with a quick dribble or sneaky shot and scored. It worked most the time. I’m older and slower but I’m a goal scorer.

    • @hockeyhacks2.0

@@Dean-h5p7n it is psychological. But you need the physical to match the mental. If you don't have the physical mechanics to match the mental psychology, you won't get this hockey ability.

Sounds like how basketball players develop. We got obsessed with doing tricks like through the legs and behind the back. Then when you get better you realize the dribbling is only a tool to allow you to move effectively, it doesnt matter what type of crossover you use if it is coordinated with your body to go where you want to go.

Watching a bunch of D1 D2 ACHA on EAST and West Coast. Lots of standing still. This allows for spacing in Box formation to open up and also settle down. Which is normally broken from a Diamond on the team defending. This forces spastic players to second guess their decisions or move up and pressure the puck. If they pressure puck that forces them to give up zone coverage and forces the defending team to focus on you and their zone with split attention. While your offensive team only has to worry about gaining zone priority or shaking off the zone defenders who are now working on split attention. Its a great way to slow the game down and let your offense catch a breath. While cause the defending team to feel excessive cognitive pressure. These Videos are Awesome!

One on-ice drill that's always annoyed me is sprints. Their purpose isn't really to develop a particular skating mechanic, their purpose is to exhaust the player (and the mechanic they develop, if they develop anything at all, is straight-line skating from a complete stop). What a waste of valuable ice-time! Have players run off-ice if that's all you want to do. Actual training will be plenty exhausting on its own!

Thank you for recalling this for me. I've been doing this naturally when I was younger and when I started to actually learn from coaches "correct" technique and started picking up my heel it stopped working. Now I realized that I basically traded advanced technique for the rookie technique. First, I am giving away my move by picking up heel and second, there is a lot of going on the ice and when you pick up your blade, small bump, small amount of snow or little poke and puck is out of control or even behind you. Total nonsense if you think about it again. I don't even know why I changed this. It really seems I just forgot how I used to do it before because of training. Thank you again for reminding me about it.

I recently integrated some stick handling drills into my cardio workouts where I work on controlling my stick handling while I am also moving my legs laterally and I've already noticed (after about 1 month) how nicely that translates to better control and confidence on the ice. I'd take those exercises over random top hand stick handling every day.
