A Short Ride in a 8v71-Equipped 1969 GM Fishbowl San Francisco Muni Bus!
Short video (about 1m15s) taken from inside 3153, a 1969 San Francisco Muni GM fishbowl transit bus. The transmission goes through two upshifts and one downshift. The more astute will notice that the first upshift slips a bit.
Please pardon the messy and rattling interior. Parts for its restoration are kept inside.

This is what happens when busfans ride in a Gillig Phantom with a "compromised" exhaust system Powertrain is a DDEC 6v92ta coupled to an ATEC HTB-748. It's a 40-foot bus that served Foothill Transit in SoCal as well as Coralville, IA before being sold to a private party. Smallest RTS Bus
Grew up riding RTS with that exact Sound at Kalamazoo/ Battle Creek, Michigan and Gary, Indiana GPTC
Putting the scream into "Screamin' Jimmy".
Bus leaves at 0:55.
Most of the ones we had in Houston, Texas sound like that too
St Bernard Parish had two RTS buses had that same motor sound
St Bernard Parish had two RTS buses had that same motor sound
To me the best sound on tbe rts was the 6v71 with the allsan 731R
I miss these classic busses.
Very impressive Detroit Diesel V-8 sound
Even tho this video is kinda old i like how he put the pedal to the medal
Back in the 90's as a kid that how you knew the bus was coming blocks away.

I thought those old fishbowls used the 6v71, not the 8v71 ...
Quite a few cities ordered their fishbowls with the 8v71. Off the top of my head, really quickly, I know San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Atlanta ordered 8v71s. I know there were more.
Quantos HP? ?
About 300
Thanks for the great ride up through Dolores park and the private right of way!!
We had these in Denver for RTD transit back in the 90s and early 2000s, I was so jealous because we never lived on the routes that operated these, we always had the ugly ass 80s neoplan buses lol
I remember these old GMC city buses
Hope they kept the holes! Sounds like the 2 strokes used by the GMC new look fish bowls! Ahh the child hood memories that come rushing back!
I think those shared the same engines as the fishbowls.
The cylinder head hangs out over the rear bumper. No realized that’s how they were designed. Someone rear ends that bus… Ughhhh
Is it just me or does the bus look so old and decrepit
Well, it's over 50 years old, and the owner has a bunch of large spare parts inside that rattle around when we're driving.
Like going home from school on the 28 line on 19th Ave. Lived near Stonestown. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Janesville used those buses back in the 90s and early 2000s. They use new ones now. Different colors and layout.
1:02 he sounded like a steam localmotive train whistle
He did😂🤣
Shame the parts for these engines aren't made anymore. Gotta preserve these buses as long as you can
Why do some have pneumatic air starters and others don’t?
It all depends upon what kind of starter the agency wants. An air starter takes much less battery power, especially in winter when colder temperatures can greatly affect battery performance
Turbine air starters do not have the melodic whoosh that the vane types do. I know this for a fact, since Tri-Met's New Flyers (the 2200s, 2300s, 2500s, 2600s, 2700s, 2800s and 2900s) all had the turbine air starter with the straight whoosh sound, while such buses as their 500s, 600s, 1400s, 1600s, 1700s, 1900s and 2100s had the vane version with the melodic whoosh.
@@L-Taraval However, they can still be dragged down by low air pressure. TriMet had switched, for emissions reasons, to electric starters beginning with the 3000 series, and even converted some of their older air-starter equipped buses to the electric type.
Why are u showing the people and not the front windshield so we can see outside
I was focusing upon my friend who really likes this kind of bus. As an aside, there's not much to see inside a tunnel. :-)

I am a former Foothill Transit Bus Driver. I worked out of the El Monte Yard. If you know the bus number I can tell you what yard it was out of. They hired me a few days after my 21st birthday. It was a fun job but not what I wanted to do for a career. El Monte Yard Bus Numbers (1998) 100-106 Gillig Spirts aka FastTrack 600-629 1989 Gillig Phantoms 630-636 1991 Gillig Phantoms 700-738 1989 Gillig Phantoms 750-760 1991 Gillig Phantoms 1000-1012 1994 Gillig Phantoms 1020-1035 1995 Gillig Phantoms 1046-1055 1996 Gillig Phantoms All other numbers operated out of the Pomona Yard.
This wasn't a Foothill bus. It was from Coralville, IA
@@L-Taraval you better read the description more closely. It was an original Foothill Transit bus. I drove those busses for a year and a half and instantly recognized the interior.
Whoops! My bad! Good catch, and thanks for the update/info. It's very appreciated.
damn ... omfg
Sounds like there is a mild slipping condition on the first upshift. Many years ago (1982) to be exact. I was on a Westchester County bus (became the Bee-Line) with the same engine as the bus in this video. It was vehicle #311 originally operated by Liberty Coaches and was manufactured in 08/1970. Could have been either a 1970 or 1971 (more likely) model. The transmission as it was trying to shift out of first gear slipped a number of times before it shifted into second gear. The engine speed would rise and fall around 3 or 4 times before the shift was complete. It did not make for a smooth ride. The transmission was later repaired. The model of the bus was T8H5306A which means it had factory A/C. The bus that you have did not come with factory A/C.
Few things here: The transmission is definitely older and tired. It could use an overhaul. Also, it could've been low on fluid and/or not warmed up enough. After a little bit of driving, it began to shift normally. As for AC, SF Muni got almost 400 of these fishbowls. 380 didn't have AC. 10 did. This is one of the buses that doesn't have AC. My friend bought and restored a SF Muni GM fishbowl with factory AC.
Gears?
Sounds better like that!
Dont fix it! It sounds perfect 👌
Looks to have taller valve covers. Does it have a Jakobs brake?
Yes, it does! Very observant of you!
@@L-Taraval I volunteer at a transit museum in Vancouver B.C. While none of our buses have an 8V71N, one of our members brought his PD-4108 in and it had an 8V71N with the same covers and a Jacobs.
1980 and 1983 San Juan AMA GMC RTS units, the best the first order consist of 126 units replacing 1962 and 1968 GMC New Looks, and part of the 1970 Flxible New Looks, the remaining renumbered to 723XX and 724XX units
I used to drive one like this at NIU in DeKalb, IL. Loved them.
Dig the RTS. My 4106 has no muffler: ruclips.net/video/CsG2qMCmLYE/видео.html
very sad what old style buses not anymore(
Janesville, WI had a GM assembly plant!
I love that sound. I really miss those buses
They came out of the tunnel into bus heaven.
Damn. I want more
Try my old 8v71: ruclips.net/video/CsG2qMCmLYE/видео.html
I dont get what he was mad about
He wasn't mad. He was excited about the unique sounds.
I'd love to do this full open in a city bus please give me a ride!!!!
Great share video new friend! Thank for sharing!
Was this coralville transit #106? I used to live in the Iowa City/Coralville area and remember seeing these buses in service back in like 2009; i also saw it parked outside my middle school (Northwest Junior High) once for a school trip in 2015 (but that was after they were retired from service) I'm actually really interested - I've seen several videos with this bus after it's been retired from Coralville Transit, and it's really cool to see where buses from where I used to live end up after they're retired (especially with such a small transit system like Coralville Transit which has like 10 buses lol)
Thanks for watching my video! It's definitely a Coralville bus, but I can't remember its fleet number. Maybe @crtman can help out.
Gotta see that one day!
I've seen 3210 in San Mateo in 2018.
Damn it used to not slip when going to 2nd lol.
It's either a bit low on fluid or simply wasn't warmed up enough. After a few minutes, it began shifting normally again. XDDDD
@@L-Taraval Probably both lol.
