A combined NED/BEL league has been talked about since the 90s and the BeneLiga, as it was dubbed, came very close to happening in 2022. The attraction of a bigger and better league and the commercial opportunities this would afford were clear to many but ultimately, this was deemed not tempting enough to the Dutch Eredivisie.
