At the beginning of my cruising life I would have chosen a boat very like this as my ideal boat. Now, 40 years and 206,000 miles later my ideas have changed radically. I really now dislike skeg hung rudders as skegs are very diffucult to fabricate and tend to be much weaker than intended. Its much easier to design and make a very good spade rudder. That most boats with spade rudders are not well designed or built is a different issue. I like light displacement boats that perform well and to some extent speed is safety: if the boat is very fast in good conditions its usually still performing safely fast in poor conditions. There is definitely a need to have some level of safe performance to windward in both very light and very heavy weather, and this is a test which many cruising boats fail. Light wind performance is crucial to safety. I have more than a few times had to sail to safety in 4-6 knots of wind with a diesel that wont cooperate, usually due to fuel issues, but once with a sheared shaft coupling. I have settled eventually on a Sundeer 60. Despite the length it isnt much bigger than your boat, just longer. Its light, narrow and low, but has 6'10" headroom. Its easy to sail with a small rig and light displacement and I frequently singlehand the boat including docking with no thruster. The bow and stern are immersed at rest so the bow does not blow off quickly. In addition the rudder is oversized which gives full authority at 0.7-1 knot . The rig is identical mast height and area to a Hanse 430. The boat has two watertight bulkheads with no through hull fittings between them. The tanks are glassed in around the waterline on either side and both water and fuel can be moved to the windward side for long legs giving around 4⁰ less heel. In the last two years I have done around 19,000 miles at an average of 202 miles per day. About a third of those miles were downwind in the trades, the rest are mixed with some forays almost down to the sub-antarctic. wavetrain.net/2011/12/26/sundeer-60-an-ideal-bluewater-cruising-boat/

Was tensioning your forestay the right thing to do? It will tend to move the masthead forward and the lowers will prevent the middle of the mast moving which then means the mast will take prebend the wrong way, making the main fuller and the leach tighter. Is that what you wanted? To simply increase forestay tension normally the backstay is tightened, or at least both.

What a difference a few decades makes. The movie "Romancing the Stone" was centered around Cartagena, but most of it was shot in Mexico due to the high cartel crime in Columbia. It is so nice to see such a beautiful city recovered. Maybe someday, some American cities will be as well. This was a great video, guys. Thank you so much, and say hello to Lucy and Penny.
