Morning Coffee - One Year Later
After living for just over a full year full time in the Kimbo I make another morning coffee video, this time in some Oregon grasslands. A little bit has changed in the routine and the Kimbo since that first morning coffee video but much remains the same, which to me means that I got a lot of things right when I moved into the Kimbo with no experience camping in it yet. Compare this video with my first to see if you can pick out some of the changes.....

Our visit and stay in Texas to see the Eclipse was a rather surreal experience in more than one way...I try to convey that feeling in this video of Texas Spur 406 Campground in the Amistad National Recreation Area. How does the 2.7 handle all of that weight? I’m considering moving over to a regular cab, but not sure if it would be able to handle a slide in.

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 14 дней назад

      I have the 5spd manual tranny so it's just a matter of selecting the right gear the the 2.7 will pull in the situation. generally I'm keeping up in traffic even in the hills but ur not going to do 80 on the freeway with this combo lol. I try to keep the revs up between 3-4k so it's 65-70mph in 4th and if it won't pull that up a hill shift down to 3rd and 4k rpm for 60mph and it goes up about anything but the steepest of hills. off road in 4 low it has tons of torque no issues there

    I don't understand how so many people with Toyota trucks are able to utilize the Kimbo platform. Even a new off-road Tacoma has a payload of only 1200 lbs, whereas the kimbo weighs ~1200 lbs. That means there isn't any room for the driver, wife, dogs, gear, water, food, etc. Only thing I can figure is people are adding suspension modifications and going over their allowable payload. Someone please clue me in on this.

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 3 месяца назад

      The Kimbo was designed specifically for/to fit exactly in the Tacoma. Plus ..I'll bet any overland rigged Taco owner will admit to being over ..but the good rigs have been built up to handle it. My regular cab 4/cyl. Tacoma is a bit lighter than a V6 extra cab or 4 door and thus has a higher payload. Still I'm sure I'm a bit over with all my gear! So ....I've added an Icon Stage 3 suspension kit for a 2" lift and added Firestone Air springs to the rear...ride is great with the air springs, pretty much don't notice the Kimbo on board. Tires are important too! Took my jacks off the Kimbo to save 100lbs. thanks for watching and the comment!

    • @colbybrady2187
      @colbybrady2187 3 месяца назад

      @@BirdPhish, yeah, I just want a midsize truck from the factory, with rear lockers, that can handle the weight of a Scout Yoho or Kimbo camper (with people and gear included), within the factory payload, and without mods.

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 3 месяца назад

      @@colbybrady2187 I suspect even with a full size truck and 2000lb payload when you put 1500lbs of Kimbo and gear in it the truck will sag in the rear some and you'll want to have something to handle the weight bring it back to level...you don't want to back that guy with the head lights pointing up with low beams and blinding everyone lol...I imagine most people towing and with slide in campers are doing something to their stock trucks so the nose of the truck isn't pointing up n the air. Also...shocks are a wear item...when my shocks needed replacing I put the Icons shocks on and it made it like a completely different truck...in good way...much, much better ride than stock shocks...good luck and thanks for watching and the comments!

    • @colbybrady2187
      @colbybrady2187 3 месяца назад

      @@BirdPhish, indeed, I figure something minor like airbags rubber bed mat, and even new shocks is fine, I just don't want to throw $15K or so into mods. Also, I just want something that is engineered from the factory as apposed to a small shop's recommendations, recommendations that might change substantially between various shops. For example, the guy on Trail Recon said that when he beefed up the suspension on his Powerwagon build with new shocks and springs, that it didn't handle quite right after that. So just trying to avoid an expensive headache like that without compromising my ability to lightly off-road too much. I'm glad your build is working out, I've always liked those regular cab Tacomas.

    It's always great to see people full timing in Kimbos, but then again I'm biased because I'm waiting on my own Kimbo to be built. I've seen a number of your videos and this one is easily your best work because, at least to me, you've chosen to exercise some faith in the ability of your camera to tell the story without narration. At the moment, there's lots of overlanding channels and I think many of them make the mistake of featuring the creator on camera way too much. It's the landscapes that should feature in these videos above anything else as far as I'm concerned. When the landscape gets taken for granted, they start fetishizing the gear and talking too much. I hope you consider getting a wind sock for your microphone. They're super cheap. Remember sound is half the picture. Cheers.

      Awesome comment! I've noticed the same thing about overlanding channels...seems to be a rule they have to move everyday lol....trying to do some things different with this channel sometimes at least. I hated to include the video clips with wind noise but decided to...the cowboys caught me by suprise and the first shot I didn't have my mic and sock on the camera. Just picked up a new mic too this week should help with sound hopefully. thanks for watching and the comment!

    @Birdphish - how does the Tacoma do with the Kimbo in the back? Is it a 4-cyl engine and what did you do to the truck for the weight of the Kimbo?

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 4 месяца назад

      yes it has the 2.7l 4 cyl. with a 5spd manual...2" lift with stage 3 Icon kit and Firestone air springs in the rear do real well with the Kimbo and all my gear. Getting 13-14 hwy mpg and it does well in the mountains...gear selection... keep the revs up

    Ok. So you're out in the middle of nowhere and having a coffee. Excuse me, but what's the point? Likes? Subscribes? Comments?

      Fair question...it was my way of unveiling, showing the viewers that I had a new camper... without getting in front of the camera and saying "I got a new camper"...also I made the coffee with an induction hob which a Kimbo owner would know a stock Kimbo will not do... so there was that tidbit too. thanks for watching and commenting!

      looking around at campgrounds I've been to it seems like more people have hard folding panels than these fabric based types....a bit more bulky but that is what I'd recommend to go with for portable panels.....thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hello! Congrats on the move into the Kimbo. I am looking at one myself for living in during the alaska summer. How do you deal with having a lack of a bathroom?

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 6 месяцев назад

      I've yet to cover that topic in any of my videos lol...thanks for watching and asking! We have a bucket-like container that I've made a seat for...we put bio-degradable bags in and dispose of them accordingly depending on where we're camping at. Sort of like the Thunder Box you can purchase but my own DIY version that closes and has a seal to keep the orders contained. thunderboxusa.com/

      Lol. Well thanks for covering it for me. Do you find the kimbo pretty doable to live in, in warmer climates especially if you were living in it by yourself?@@BirdPhish

    • @BirdPhish
      @BirdPhish 6 месяцев назад

      absolutely doable...very comfy space but it is small so you need to be well organized and keep organized or else it can get frustrating moving things to get to other things...i'd say the first 4 months it felt like bailing water that was coming in as fast as I could bail but now I feel things are where they need to be and it's easy. So glad to have made the move into our Kimbo! @@tyb3542
