Skywatcher StarAdventurer GTi Unboxing
my question is with the usb and power connections running through the mount, why do you have so much stuff on top of the scope. makes sense if you don't have connections through the mount but not the way it is now. Just because the mount can handle the weight, it doesn't need to hold it all. By the way, with a usb connection on the mount, an eqdirect cable is unneccesary.
Very nice review, that Wave 150 mount looks really interesting. But I wonder why nobody on the internet does a real test with heavy payloads on these strainwave mounts. That being said, I would never trust that tripod ...
Thanks. The tripod is the problem for more weight. When the adapter for the EQ6-R tripod comes out in January, I'll test with a large refractor and a SCT. Not willing to chance it with the CF tripod.
@@bluegrassastro Thanks, looking forward to you review with larger payload.
Thanks for the Review and Unboxing, one of the best reviews yet of the Wave 150i in my opinion
Glad you enjoyed it
Omg the audio sounds like Apollo….did you record this on a reel to reel? Lol
LOL you are Sooo right. This was an early video and I was using on-camera microphone. I've since upgraded equipment and hopefully you'll find my later video's audio much better!
I have posted a screen shot of the PHD graph in the community tab.
Weldone mate!
Thank you for taking a chance on this new mount. I’m surprised the typical influencers haven’t been given mounts to throughly review yet. Low carbon, what nonsense. Looks like once you adjust the altitude you can’t put the mount back in the case. I have to set up and tear down every session and would need to put the mount back in the case. Guess you have to cut the foam. Looks like guiding worked out great. How did your orthogonal graph come out in PHD2, right angle? Did the Guiding Assistant show any backlash in the pyramid graph?
You are very welcome. Yes, you have to move the altitude back in order to place it back into the case. Another slight issue, if you use their pier extension, it requires tools (allen wrench) to remove three screws in order to remove. If you are going to be placing it back into the case each time, this is sort of a pain. I have posted a screen shot of the PHD graph in the community tab. There was almost zero backlash and the graph was a perfect right angle. I've had clouds since my first night, but hope to get it back our early next week for some more star time.
I've been looking at this mount to replace my Celestron CGX mount (which is showing its age) and host the big Celestron 11" Edge scope. I am impressed with its statistics, and seeing it functioning in the field shows that those stats are very real. One of the reasons I prefer investing in this mount vs. the AM5N is the issue of being able to balance in the declination axis. I understand your mount has a clutch for this axis; is that correct? BTW, I went to Murray State University many, many years ago and now live in Savannah, GA. Clear skies - Patrick -
Pat, Love your channel. I went to your rival school, also a long time ago, Western Ky Univ. The releases are not actually clutches, but rather locking pins. You remove them and the axis can move freely for a limited amount. It would certainly allow you to balance in either axis. Clear skies.
The 11" EdgeHD is not a scope I'd be comfortable strapping to a 150i or AM5N. Assuming your imaging camera is one of the modern 3.76 micron pixel sensors, even with a 0.7x reducer, you're at an image scale of 0.4"/px. No way these small strain wave gear mounts are going to track/guide well enough to support that scale.
@@JonnyBravo0311 Good to know. Thank you, Johnny
@JonnyBravo0311 I would say it depends. The reason I say this, is people have had great success with 8" edge hd on the old am5. In addition, assuming you have paid for it, blur exterminator does a fantastic job correcting misshapen stars. I am on the trial and blown away what it does with my images from a 6"sct taken on a star adventure gti. (Yes i am at 15lbs payload on a mout rated for 11lbs)
@@lcmattern If you have to rely on software to have round stars than I guess there is something wrong in your setup ....
Great vid, thanks. Maybe concider using a different color scheme. RUclips compression washes out the black fonts with the white background. Clr Skies.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I love Kentucky, it was a beautiful place and the people there were very nice loved it loved it loved it
Thanks. It's a wonderful place indeed.
It was an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing your experience
Thanks. Words really can't describe it!
Well done!
This was a quick response from me whining on your last video that you didn't show your roll-off method. Thanks for the fast response. I was staying away from the chain method because I didn't want a sagging chain making the mechanism both unsafe and unsightly. You solved both problems by running your chain horizontally instead of the common vertical configuration. I really like it and will, with your blessings, incorporate this in my new 8x10 building!
By all means, feel free to use this idea. The issues you mentioned are the exact reasons that I didn't go with the chain drive in the first place. However, the rail solution caused other issues as I outlined in my video. I went through several scenarios before I settled on the horizontal solution. It has worked out fantastic so far. Good luck on your build!
Building a small observatory is not much different than a garden shed except for one major difference. The method used to make the roof a roll-off. This is a nice video but would have been totally complete if you had included the roll-off mechanism.
I have another video that shows the mechanism and upgrade. If you have questions, let me know. ruclips.net/video/YeHWzAaH4Dc/видео.html
How does the Deep Sky Dad panel show up in the flat panel equipment folder? I don't see a DSD choice there. What should it say?
Once you install the ascom drivers and connect the flat panel, it should show up in the drop down equipment list. I've posted a screenshot in the community tab.
Thanks. I have the bigger flat panel for a 6 inch Newtonian. Unfortunately, like you, it blocked my guide scope. I can't mount it to the side like you did because it will throw off balance and DSD says it has to be mounted straight up. I would have to go with an OAG, which is a PIA. Oh well, my scope is going to a remote hosting site and they won't let me keep the flat panel mounted because as the panel opens and closes, the "swing diameter" of the rig exceeds the limit. They pack in the scopes and you can't hit anyone's rig. So they will have to come stick it on there every time I need to take calibration frames (which can't be every day, they won't do it, I will have to reuse flats/dark flats/darks, too bad). You figured a lot of data in there for your filters. I must learn that, I have just let NINA tell me that my light is too bright or too dim and then adjust the brightness. Your way obviously better.
Nice. I have DSD flatpanels on my Stellamira Apo's, great bit of kit.
The sun? Yeah, it's got a flare for thst kind of thing! 🌞
So magnificent. To put it in perspective, you could fit 1,000 planet Earths inside of those ‘clouds’ involved with the prominence.
24 years ago I bought a Lowe's storage building about the same size of your building. I installed it on bricks and left the top off. I still have the building. It was great for keeping from seeing street lights etc. It sure worked good. But of course yours is much better. But Mine got the job done. 🙂
About 24 years ago I bought a Lowes storage building that you put together. I put down bricks and set it on top of the bricks and left the roof off. It was a great place to view with my telescope and not have lights messing up my views. I still have it.
Thanks for the video. Can you still manually open and close the roof if needed (i.e. power outage)? btw - I'm doing astrophotography near Somerset, KY and getting a ROR is my next project so I'm getting as much info as possible.
Yes, there is a mechanical release on the motor that allows it to free-wheel. You will love a ROR! I have some earlier videos of my construction process and an early tour. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to help in any way that I can.
Any particular reason for the orientation of the building (doorway facing North)? I would have oriented the area the roof rolls to as North, mainly because I don't go "below" Polaris in that direction, most of my good sky is from E to WSW. I wish I'd built something like this many years ago. Too old to start now, and light pollution has reduced what I can see where I am now.
Light pollution is getting us all! And we're never too old! I'm 62!!! As for the orientation, I have ridge with a line of tall trees directly to the west. It is my most occluded direction, so it made sense to have the roof roll in that direction. The roof has the least amount of interference in that direction for me.
Wow! Thank you for sharing!
You are very welcome!!
That's awesome
Thanks!
Thanks!
Absolutely Awesome!!
Thanks. It was an amazing experience!
Look forward to watching your new video ( Venice is a good drive from my location, I live in brooksville mid state in Fla.its a small town with Bortle4 sky's but don't know how long that will remane, I'm from Virgina my wife is from Paintsville KY and my best friend lives in Russell Springs KY look forward to haveing conversations about your videos and your techniques in Astrophtotogry god bless hopefully your Astronomer pin pal Archie.
Great video I'm starting to get up in my years now turning 65 this year purchased the plans from sky shed your video shows the roll off observatory better than anyone else on RUclips so tired of setting up my C8 on a Celestron Avx mount with all the accessories that I use to visually and take Astrophtotogry keep up the great work you have been doing I look forward to seeing more videos from you down in brooksville fla were I live 10:25
Thanks for the comment. We are in the same boat, I'm 63. I automated the roof after that video, but did not like the way that it functioned. I am in the process of upgrading that system and should have a video up in a few days covering that process. (Also, I lived in Venice, Fla for 8 years - a long time ago!)
I don't know anything about telescopes or even if that is one, but that is so goddamn cool!
Мечты сбываются!
Absolutely!
Thx for sharing, looks a bit harsh at the end, but I understand it was for only for showing the workflow. I would love to see this image as a final one.
I'm traveling right now but will upload when I get home.
How did you collect this? What scope?
It's an Orion 8" newtonian with 2.5x telemate. Zwo asi462mc camera and skywatcher eq6-r pro.. I use sharpcap, autostakkert, registax and photoshop.
Good catch, friend! @@bluegrassastro
Thank you for this video! Very helpful to see what the size is like.
I really want to build a small observatory for astrophotography in my front field. this looks awesome.
I've had it a little over a year. It is a true game changer. Well worth the effort and expense.
I managed to get a somewhat muted picture of Andromeda last night before the mosquitos drove me back, unfortunately the light pollution around Bowling Green is a but much so it's a little washed out.
too expensive for most people
It is higher than a standard star tracker, but the goto capability is a game changer.
Thanks for showing us the comparison.
Oh Dang.
Oh Dang, I feel for you! Clear skies
Now its smoke!
What size are the hex bolts holding in the original GTi saddle?
They are m4 x 20
Lip smacking good 😂
Thanks!
Nice upgrade!! I have one of these ADM brackets and I will try it on my Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi mount. Thanks for sharing!
looks like a great little OBS!! CS
Thanks. It changes everything!
@@bluegrassastro it really does!
Beautiful!!!!
Thanks!
I feel your pain when things go wrong during an imaging session but the resulting images you have turned out great so all good in the end, gained another sub clear skies!!
Thanks 👍
Man that's a lot of spaghetti there guy.
Yes..yes it was. That was out of the box first setup. Believe me much better now!
Very nice little build! i'm hoping to put my pier in this year once the ground thaws. that will be likely my start the rest may have to wait a year ish. i'll be happy to have that as a start! well done!
It really is a game changer. Good luck!
@@bluegrassastro Thank you! Certainly looking forward to it being done. I've left my rig out for months before covered. Not having to polar aligning every time, simply go out and power on, come back in and set the playlist and target for the night really is the best way.
Awesome
We have very similar style using NINA, similar guiding numbers, similar star HFR and similar rig (my little bit more simple). Scary!!! I just don’t have observatory.
Thanks Steve, This will be very helpful finding the Comet as I have NINA software on my Telescope computer
Glad you found it helpful!
nice job, thankyou very much
