The clogs are swedish clogs! Japan made all kinds of stuff that was based off of Swedish and german items! It was very popular at the time so they jumped on the bandwagon to make that stuff as well! So you were correct, that they are Swedish clogs :)

i love these alterations video! for the checkered top, i think it would be really cute if you attached some black thin ribbon or lace at the sides so you can tie it at the back. that way you can still fit it over your head and cinch your waist!
