Post-recording notes: This is what I consider a true blue-black - enough black to really darken and de-saturate the blue. Unfortunately, I can't find it for sale at any of the US stores I generally use. Though it's a dry ink, I think if you want to see the b...

I found Smoke sitting in the sink one day, staring at the Dawn dish soap bottle. Mildly disturbed, I went to see if he'd found a bug. Nope. We ended up seeing how he liked running water. And, just in case anyone seeing this is the person(s) up-voting Diamine Onyx Black, I went to ink my pen with it today, and it's bad. The sample was a gift, so I don't know enough about it to go forward. It seems to have suffered pretty badly from evaporation. Since I don't know how much should have been left, I can't just add water. It's gone down the drain and I'm picking another ink for #307.

    I like the addition of CMY color chips, making sure the hue is mostly correct. Saturation and vibrancy seems to be wildly different between camera manufacturers

    • @EFNIR

    Arghh. Like American Aristocracy, I adore the colour of this. Sadly the super fast dry time invariably leads to feathering and is a deal breaker for me. I've tamed American Aristocracy in a0.2mm Platinum Preppy. Might risk a sample of this in the same pen and see what happens. Thanks as ever for these informative and enjoyable reviews.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR 8 дней назад

      🥰 So nice to see you, Tas! You're most welcome! If you get a sample, I hope you enjoy it! If you're like me, it'll grow on you and you'll start to overlook its faults. It wasn't so bad about feathering (usually, if it does fairly good on the absorbent and copy paper, I don't worry about feathering), but it definitely spreads (probably whatever causes it to dry fast does that). You could always try an additive like glycerine or InesF on FPN sometimes adds gum arabic - apparently this reduces the bad behavior (link below). www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/360624-an-alternative-look-at-ink-wetness/#comment-4436964

      You're welcome! 😊 Oh, I didn't think to chill the ink itself - though I guess I'd have to do that with the whole pen. Not sure I want to get my pen *that* cold. I do have other Polar inks that aren't reviewed yet. I'll ponder this for the next one.

    • @Euripides_Panz

      Water-based? I don't think it will write. Probably damage the pen, even.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR 3 дня назад

      @@Euripides_Panz The Polar ink series are explicitly designed to write in freezing temperatures. There's obviously *something* added to keep them from freezing. When I do my next review, I'll try some tests in that direction and see how the inks perform.

      the fact that it spreads is not good news for those of us with small handwriting, so that’s a ‘no’ from me but it is an appealing colour although whether the next bottle you bought was the same colour would be interesting!; does anyone know what gets added to make it a ‘polar’ ink: not sure anti-freeze and ink sounds like a good pairing!:)

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR 9 дней назад

      @@anguswhite8233 The spread may well depend on your paper, so I'd say if you like the color well enough, and tend to use a single paper, it might be worth testing a sample. (Though as you say, the next bottle may vary...) No doubt, the secret ingredient is a "trade secret" - I've never even seen serious speculation as to what it is - though a simple (but probably expensive) chemistry test would reveal that.

    I ❤ the pumpkin, but it cakes up on the back of the nib in the feed area, not ruining anything. I rinse it and go back to using it again. This seems to happen after like a day or two and I have like two or three different bottles. I don’t know if it’s something to do with aging but one of the bottles is pretty new. I use it mostly in my Noodler’s Ahabs and Neponsets.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR 16 дней назад

      Ah, I didn't see crust, but yes, orange inks frequently do that. Evaporation from the pen will speed it up. If you use the pen enough that the ink in the feed is never that old, then it might not happen, but it is normal for certain colors and not really harmful.

    I do like Diamine pumpkin, but like yourself I prefer burnt oranges like Iroshizuku yu-yake which, like pretty much every other Iro ink, just doesn’t work well on the lightweight DesignPhil paper in my traveler’s notebook - J Herbin inks also seem to write fat on this; have decided the best approach is to find as close a match as I can in an ink by Graf von Faber-Castell, Montblanc or Diamine(not their 1864 line as suspect these have added lubricants); thanks for this:)

In a dry EF this mixable ink is somewhat usable, the colors are nice, very saturated indeed.

      🤣 I keep all these cartridges - as you say, the agitator ball is great and they're so easy to refill. I'm finding that for ordinary use, you really want to dilute them pretty heavily. That looks like a fun ink! Sailor's Manyo line contains a number of Interesting inks like Haha, Hinoki, and Ayami. I have not used them in the vicinity of kitties so I cannot speak to their influence over those wild felines but I imagine the effect will be the same as with Nadeshiko, so I will have to be careful! Thanks for the excellent review!

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR Месяц назад

      You're most welcome! This is my first Manyo ink. I expect it would be much more interesting in a larger nib or a wash. In most cases, I find that an ink works well in an EF nib, even if differently, but in cases like this, an EF nib just doesn't do it justice. Kitties are so unpredictable! 😸 Always best to keep an eye on them.

    that is an attractive colour, will definitely be getting a sample of this to try out: thanks for this:); for what it’s worth, I definitely do get all sorts of chromo-shading using Sailor manyo nekoyanagi in my resin Pilot falcon which has a SEF nib writing in my traveler’s notebook on Midori’s lightweight paper:)

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR Месяц назад

      You're very welcome! Hope you enjoy the sample! I recommend trying it in a broader or stub nib as well, to see the interesting colors. And now that you mention it, I'll try it in my Falcon SEF one day - the flexing might be enough to bring out some color variation, plus its wetness. 😊 Thanks!

  • @maidpretty
    @maidpretty Месяц назад

    This ink needs a smooth wet medium. For a EF/F nib Herbin Eclait de Saphir should hit the "milky royalish blue" mark better.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR Месяц назад

      I agree on both counts: broader nib for this ink and Eclat de Saphir is more compatible with EF nibs! There was also something about its color that I found relaxing, which didn't seem to be there in other similar color inks.

  • @Volkmannx
    @Volkmannx Месяц назад

    Awesome ink, pretty similar to Troublemaker Milky Ocean which has a little more shading and play of colors. Comes with less wetness because of this, though. Anyway, thank you!

    The quink blue ink available in India is very diluted, like only 1/5th density of color as the ink reviewed here.

    I’m sure that others benefit from these reviews. I don’t understand them. Strange “typewriter” sounds plus street ambient noises, printing rather than writing, and finally no close-up images.

    • @EFNIR
      @EFNIR 2 месяца назад

      Hello, @fedya4445. The "typewriter" sounds are the sound of my nib against the paper. The street and ambient noises are simply what my microphone picks up - nothing I can do about that as I certainly cannot afford a soundproof studio. There are close-up images, though - the video description includes "Chapter" links, and the last three are always a closeup photo of the review sheet, a still of the scan, and the end screen (which is just there for links to the previous video and the channel). The video description also includes links to still images. I know that a decreasing audience watches videos on an actual computer with a decent size screen rather than a cell phone with a tiny screen, nonetheless, my videos are designed to be best viewed on a computer screen. A phone in landscape mode is still readable (for me), but not in portrait mode. I print the vast majority of the text because an increasing number of people cannot read cursive. I do always write the last two "exit" lines in cursive, though, for those who prefer to see what the ink looks like that way. Sorry this doesn't suit you. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or tools to accommodate all the various requests I've received. If it suits you better, I do post my reviews on the Fountain Pen Network and FPGeeks forums (as LizEF), on reddit's r/fountainpens (as LizMEF), and on Instagram (as linked in the video description). The first three are linked from my shared inks spreadsheet (again, video description), if that helps.
