Hello Alby, I have an old Z800 Workstation and I’m trying to update the internal hard drive to a Samsung 860 QVO SSD drive. I did first buy a Samsung 870 EVO SSD but after watching your video and seeing that it wasn’t directly tested I got the 860 QVO SSD. But the system cant seem to see the new SSD either. Note I’ve updated the BIOS to the latest BIOS v03.61 and the new SSD is in slot 0. Where the old harddrive containing the OS used to be. In the BIOS, the ‘SATA Emulation’ is set to ‘RAID+AHCI’ and ‘SATA PORT 0’ is set to ‘GEN2/3.0Gbps (Internal Only)’. Do you know what I might be missing?

I had endless trouble with a HP Z820 I bought on eBay. To get it going properly almost cost me almost the price of the machine again.

I was wondering if you could RAID0 different hard drive? every video ive seem they always take identical hardrive. what happen if i take different brand and size HD and created a RAID0 with it? Would it be faster with a 6 Gbit/s PCI controler card?

For curiosity, the missing top cover suggests yours had the rackmount rails installed.

The fastest ssd for the Z800 is the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD. it´s my bootdrive and comes to 1200mb/s because of the pcie 2.0. in my Z820 same ssd comes to 2500 mb/s!

Yes a video on the wiring would be great. I used a piece of brass tubing to compress the plastic tabs that secure the 3 power wiring plugs to the case. A video on that to help other people would be great. Z's are great machines. I waited 3 years for my Z820. My CardDeluxe audio card was PCI and the Z820 had one PCI slot; that worked out great. You're doing a great job here.

Hey alby I have a problem. I have the same system and a ssd which supports sata 6gbs, but after installing it. It shows only as sata 1.5 gbs interface and my read and write speed is no more than 140-150 mbs. Can you help me with this?

Btw - my Z800 has 96gb ram, x6590 x2, and a GeForce 1080tx, along with a SSD and a nVME. I don’t think I can upgrade it further. Maybe a better vid card.

In the middle of the upgrade now. The WinPass11 at softpedia did not work, but I found a newer version that did work. Not yet completed, but hopefully it will all keep going and finish. I had troubles with Win10 on the Z800. It didn’t like to sleep and when it did, it would wake up right. Always had to either shut it down or reboot. Hopefully Win11 fixes this.

can you install hdd in those slots and not use raid? will they just show up if they are formatted or will it not read anything if its not in raid?

Thank you Alby, I used your method on an HP Z600 with the Windows 11 22H2 release, and despite a couple of error messages from WinPass11 saying that it couldn't download the files needed (and then it downloaded them anyway) it worked a treat.

I also got a z800 for around 100 pounds a while back. duel xeon5690's 40 gb of ram. 6 500gb hardrives 4 mechanicle, 2 solid state. And a low end GPU from around when the machine was new. and two network adaptors I didn't really need. physical state was great. not a scratch that I could see, even still had the plastic film on one panel. Basically looked new. pretty good deal I felt. I also had a simlilar ram issue, where one of the slots was given a failing rank. But this only happend after It had owned it for a while. I moved the ram to another slot, but it flashed an error about ram opopulatino rules, if i had had the ram lopsided. I assume that's just a thing with these z800's? I later got a ram upgrade was fits into the 8 top slots, thus bypassing the bad slot and remaining even. But I am concerned another slot might fail in the future. so do you know if the slots can be fixed at all?

I took out the two small torx drive screws. I tried bumping it with a piece of wood, but it wouldn't budge. I didn't want to get arm strong with it. Think I'll pull the drives out so I don't shock them. Thought I was doing it wrong. thanks for the info.

Thanks bud! Good tips, good info and I didn't have to read much lol :) Great pc's they take a graphics card no problem although you can't overclock the cpu because of the dual cpu. I use a raid configuration with two 1tb hdd's but I really need to upgrade. I also use a massive sas drive. I'd heard that disabling the sas controller speeds up the boot time. My main issue is not necessarily the boot time (although...) but how sluggish my pc has become over time. I added a titan x to replace my gtx780 and it began to... sort of crash on it's own sometimes, often predictably. I am not always nice to it. I might have to just blame myself? I has a 1400w linear uninterrupted power supply and I can be away from home weeks at a time and constantly stream games on it. But when updates roll around, as soon as I unpause them and start to let it do it's thing, the multiple reboot processes can cause me to go into a boot loop. Imagine how glorious if microsoft let you update without reboots. I'm scared of experiencing bootloops on this more than any other pc. Getting it to snap out of the bad bcd is like... letting it sit there for 2 months without looking at it, idk. I guess it has to run all those selfcheck tests on the ram with ecc and whatnot. Chances are you're running one of these with over 40gb ram for maximum productivity. Oh well. Have a good one! thanks again.

Hi Alby, thanks for the video. Can you remember which particular USB3 /PCIe adaptor with internal header you used ? I'd like to fit a USB3 front panel too. I've got a couple of Z800s along with a couple of Z840s but the Z800s can be a bit fussy regarding which USB3 card they will recognize, especially if it isn't an HP branded card. Thank you

You can run Ubuntu-Mate LINUX on an 800, why on Eaerth would you want to run any sort of microschlock SW on a super-computer like that?? Isn't that a bit like using Secretariat to pull a plow???

How much power do they supply. Also do you know, on the 800, with pci slots will also supply gpu power and how much they supply?

Great video. Could you please test a RAID5 setup instead of a RAID0 (stripe with NO redundancy). If just one drive fails in the RAID0 array all your data is gone. Please compare speeds of both array types in another video. You could also try/test 2 large SATA drives in RAID1 (Mirror = Redundancy) and 2 small fast SAS (10-15k rpm) drives in a RAID0 (Stripe for but no redundancy).
