New Rivian R1T Takes On Our Driver Assistance Test! Pre-mapped Routes Bring Problems
Jordan and Jess take the second generation Rivian R1T (tri-motor) on our Hogback Driver's Assistance Test! Generally a great showing other than the issues around pre-mapped road data falling short in construction zones.

Mercedes AMG EQE SUV Takes On The 10% EV Road Trip Challenge!
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but my hummer EV SUV omega edition can’t even do 196 miles without needing to charge on the way. I don’t get it!? I have a Rivian R1S as well, and it has no issues covering the same route. My Rivian has the off road 20 inch tires and is rated for similar range as the hummer.
How did Kyle’s generation one Rivian stay locked in, and a GEN two Rivian cancel ADAS on you in an entire section? That’s ridiculous, they’re going backwards?
Would be great to do the same test at 65 MPH… maybe would go 250 miles?❤😅
The part where you follow the food truck, then switch the the middle lane and never pass, only to be passed on both sides is bothersome. Why wouldnt Rivian software allow you bump up to 70 mph to at least match "general flow" of traffic. When a food truck is pulling away from you going up the mountain, its a sign that you are too slow lol
Not suppose to drive with regenerative braking (B) on, that is only for mountain driving.
I think this a fair review, not a hit job like others, who went out of their way to the point of making it personal.
Looks to me from the views out the window that you are always in canyons when it quits. It could be it cannot receive enough GPS signals to know exactly where it is. GPS can require up to 8 satellites viewed simultaneously to get super accurate location. Down in the canyons the GPS receiver may only be able to view a few sats.
Hey guys! Is it sure that the pack was the 75kWh? The math doesn't add up. Try figuring the average rate from 10% to 60% that took 6 and a half minutes. For let's say 70 kWh usable, that would be 323kW average. From the graph we can see it was way above that. Can you please confirm or double check? 🙏
The good news is that Comma AI support is coming to Rivian soon, to fix this mediocre ADAS on a $100K EV.
Is this the large pack dual motor or max pack tri motor? The large pack dual motor has an EPA range of 329 and the max pack tri motor has a range of 371 (405 in conserve mode).
231...is a pathetic #.
Your hogback data needs fields for Date Tested and Software Version. I got rid of my gen1 R1T mostly due to Driver+. If you have zero desire for ADAS, its a great, innovative product. Only company to rival Tesla OS.
The spreadsheet you're using to collect your data would be a lot more useful if you explain each variable you're observing with the document, and it would probably promote better data collection since it's not the same person doing each test.
After seen Kyle and the autonomous driving car in China, i am curios to see these car doing this test. I think it could set a new benchmark. It is not possible yet, but the technology will come. Thank you Jordan for doing this Test. Since i bought my first EV years ago i am very interessted in the fast development of EVs. To keep me imformed of all the new tech around EVs i have to say thanks to the whole Team.
While construction zone disengagements are important to test, I kind of feel like this test needs to treat those separately. "Regular road score" and "construction zone score". Of course, that would need a section of road that reliably has "difficult construction zone" and a section of road that is "never construction" to compare vehicles acceptably.
The two annoyances I have with my Gen 1 Rivian's driver assistance are: 1. Premapped-only. C'mon, Rivian. My *NON*-BlueCruise Mach-E is more capable on a random two-lane road than my Rivian is on premapped highways. 2. My Gen 1 seems to *REALLY* want to stay on the side of the lane that the vehicle I'm passing is on. Change from right to center lane to pass a semi? It'll hug the right line. I'm in the center lane in traffic, and a semi passes me on the left? The vehicle will hug the left line. And because mine doesn't have "rear vehicle detect," it will veer to the left *WHEN THE TRUCK IS NEXT TO ME.* (That one is often in an area where the left lane exits a mile ahead, and during rush hour, the main lanes will be slow, but that left exit lane will be fast.)
10:30 - Those are solid white lines. That's a no-lane-change zone. There is no such thing as a "passing _discouraged_ zone." Methinks maybe you need to re-read your driver handbook. (Colorado Driver Handbook, January 2025 edition, page 9.) You can even see the "PASS WITH CARE" sign marking the beginning of the "passing allowed" area/end of the no passing zone.
3:40 - I thought the Gen 2 (2025) had eye tracking… Is it not active yet? (I know it will never be active on my 2022, even though the camera is there.)
3:30 - "Adapt to speed limits" is +5 points, but "doesn't have offset" is a full MINUS five? I could even understand -4, but removing the points entirely with no offset? While for many people in many areas, having an offset is preferred, there are people who would want zero offset. Enough to at least grant 1 point for "adapt with no offset." (Obviously irrelevant to the Rivian.)

I don't think people realize just how pathetic everyone else's ADAS is compared to Tesla so kudos for Rivian for saying they even have game😊😊
Road trip able until you are going West into the headwind for a full day.
Pre mapped only is a wild failure of the system in 2025.
When the traditional manufacturers are competing with Tesla better than software focused Rivian in terms of ADAS, the reason is pretty obvious. Volume of data points. Ford, GM, etc have so many more cars on the road collecting data to program these systems. I put a deposit on a Scout but my guess is that at launch it will have a far worse ADAS system than my F150 Lightning
Those 70 kph range added curves should end at the point the battery is fully charged. Projecting the plot line horizontally after that point makes no sense.
Great Video. Jess adds a lot to the review. Please try to keep using A passenger that is not an EV expert and super enthusiast. This adds to the review for people that have a more limited experience with these kind of Driving assist systems.
as a Chinese who trace local car news i found really really weird that Western audience really love to compare the charging speed is not even on me or a lot of Chinese check list if i want to buy an ev is good to be charging fast but if not so be it
Driver+ is disappointing and inconsistent. The lack of expanding premap areas is lame. I’ve had it in driver+ on fail on crossing a bridge then become available again after off the bridge. Phantom braking is still happening. Flat straight interstates is only place that it passes, but so does everything else. C-
Rivian 2025 ADAS is comparable to Tesla 2018 EAP
Fun to cruise and chill with friend, Jess.
My husband wears golf gloves while driving his gen1 R1T always. No worries for screen touching or steering wheel nagging.
Automatic lane changing in my Ioniq6 is so slow as to be useless. Otherwise, good ADAS in the Ioniq6 except naggy about putting hands on steering wheel.
GreT video again. Love Jess. I love the fact that she asks questions which Jordan answers. Greatest Out Of Spec team so far.
$72,000 VW minivan. I don’t care what it’s reminiscent of. It’s an otherwise completely regular minivan. The mid seats do not come out. So the completely flat floor and utility that is supposed to be afforded by an EV’s skate board drivetrain architecture is lost. You’re left with a $45,000 minivan that runs on batteries. Is that worth $28,000 more? That’s 150k miles of gasoline. No special utility, no special economy, what is the point of “People’s Car” moniker? This makes no sense.
I think you need to add a category for 'miles driven with ADAS unavailable', and the higher the number, the worse the score.
Unfortunately Jordan essentially ended the test when he failed to take over when prompted going into first construction zone. Results were skewed due to being in "jail" for 1/3 of the test. Hands off driving being disabled in construction is a positive in my opinion. It is currently not safe for road crews or driver's. All that said Rivian ADAS system needs a LOT of work.
Sorry but at this point it’s Tesla. FSD is life changing for me and will be for my wife. Also a non Tesla on a non Tesla charging infrastructure can only be described as traumatic for someone that is not familiar with the subject matter. To your credit and others watching the charging videos educated me greatly but you should not need education to be able to go on a 500 mile trip
Great info here. Thank you!
Wow. You guys gave no idea about the gulf between FSD and other ADAS systems. Its like comparing ChatGPT with Alexa.
Love the copilot and the honest reactions! And the occasional look of terror 😂
I think you need to rethink how premapped is scored. Being unavailable for a large amount of the drive should either be DNF of negative points proportional to the time. Seems unfair vs cars without premapped to only penalise this with a -5 when it seems like you had to do a third of the driving?
I'm a Model Y owner with FSD. Looking at Rivian R1S, need more space for longer and larger car camping adventures. Really, really do not look forward to downgrading from FSD. I hope Rivian can license FSD from Tesla sometime soon, or at the very least Autopilot...
Gen 1 Driver+ sucks in tight curves but is pretty decent on long straight and gentle curves.
looks like Lucid and Rivian biased. Too much praise for things they do wrong. Looks like not a hogback test but praise and future hope. Dogsh*t. 😢
I hate that it slows for corners. Make it an option that can be turned off or at least parameterize.
Hello Jordan. And welcome back Jess! AKA co-pilot😊
It's funny how our standards change so quickly. 6 months ago, FSD would not be "enough" for Jess' mom. But our expectations only ever get higher (and we wonder why cars are more expensive now lol). Which is also why I'm surprised to hear her judge everyone else so harshly. Tesla benefits from massive AI investments that no one else can hope to match and it's taken them this many years to get to this point VERY recently. Obviously good on tesla, but that's not something you replicate overnight. Hence why I think we may be moving toward a situation similar to Huawei in China - 3rd party provider that can be licensed and put into many manufacturers' cars. Maybe not as good as bespoke integration, but good enough to meet level 3 expectations. Kinda like how Ionna is the only way manufacturers are going to be able to challenge the super charger network in the US. We'll see. But I was interested in FSD even before the end to end AI and it's hard to deny how quickly it's become extremely capable. Exciting times for sure.
FSD IS NOT DRIVERS ASSISTANT, FSD ID THE DRIVER
Totally agree with you Jordan and no, it’s ok, but not pretty good. I love our gen 1 R1S but the Driver+ just sucks. Luckily, my wife drives it and I do for local driving and when we go on family trips, I can live with it. Rivian can copy Tesla’s basic autopilot system and I don’t understand why they keep sticking with this mapped BS. My gosh, I rented a Subaru and it had a better ADAS than Rivian. My daily driver is a 2023 Model Y and it’s great for the ADAS aka autopilot.
I personally don’t think every car needs to have tesla level of adas. Not everybody wants that - i think most people just want something decent. I’d be interested to seeing the metrics in Tesla on how many % of hours driven is on adas vs manual. Im gonna guess its less than 50%
My FSD usage (v13.2.2) is over 95%. I always use it, except parking lots basically.
