Did I miss the picture of the Esplanade before Roy Roger's reconstruction. I remember a delightful long water fountain flowing over the wall on the Gallia street side and have yet to find any actual pictures just a sketch in library archives. Everyone around my age remembers and misses that fountain
Pause the video at 24 seconds and zoom in. 😊 I loved that waterfall!
I was born in portsmouth ohio this is incredible
I’m related to 1901 Portsmouth Mayor, Cread Milstead
My Dad and his brothers were in the children’s home in the early 1930’s
Well done! Thanks!
That is the site of OSCO the company that makes the castings for the Great American Cast Iron Co. They sell high end waffge makers and fry pANS.
That's what I use to think but it turns out this was a completely different company that went out of business long ago. Seems having similar industry in the same town was pretty common because it made easier to share suppliers and a skilled labor force. Here's the video I did on OSCO: ruclips.net/video/L7cnCvhYJ5M/видео.htmlsi=vo1dlxcd7F4faYsD
My name was Blevins also. Love the pictures. Like I said I was born in 1941.
Thank you for showing these pictures. I was born in 1941 in West Portsmouth. I also lived in Portsmouth.
Wonder if there are photos from Kindergarten classes from 1970?
I've seen lots of Kindergarten pictures in the Portsmouth Facebook groups. I was a Highland kid, myself.
I love these videos and pictures of portsmouth, all my family are from the portsmouth area, Reinhardt, Buckle, Gahms and Jones. Spent time there in the summerm Lake Margret, Lucasville, Davis Camps my grandfathers house in New Boston, beautiful area.
Do you have any pictures of the john dice carriage manufacturer I'm an aspiring horse drawn equipment restorer and kind of want to see pictures of the place that sold carriages as far as Missouri from my hometown of portsmouth
Not that I know of. …that I know of. But you have perked my interest to research.
I'm guessing you already know that two stories of his three story shop still remain at 418 2nd street?

@vicnoel7837 yes, but barely the thing is leaning away from the ax throwing place by probably 8 ft minimum because I have very little help to even start the carrage shop I want there's no way I could save the building unless some miracle happened I literally spent the last of my savings at the rinky dink carrage shop auction my friend Steven's, dad's carrage shop over in unity that sold after he passed there was multiple items i wanted to buy but a extruded tire machine to install the high tension wires in buggy tires was the only thing that I wasn't out bid on at the time it was the primary thing I wanted but I now know who makes the machines I met them at the buckeye limited 7 1/2 inche gauge train meetup
Nice work Vic! Don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd that large in Portsmouth. These days I’d be concerned :)
I wonder who the statue was of in the esplanade in the 1800's? Thanks for the look back at my home town.
I would guess Cogswell that donated the water fountain, but I could be wrong
I wish you would do Millbrook Park!! These are great!!!
Thanks! I've been kicking around doing another - it's been awhile!
I was born in Portsmouth Ohio Sure looks a lot different what's 12 years old when I left I'm 64 now went back to visit in 2022 It sure looked a lot different
I love how you went from the recent time to showing the past pics. Thank you for sharing.
Remember back when I was a little kid back in the early 90s they're still used to be the rings on the sidewalks where they would tie up the horses I always thought that was pretty neat not sure if they still have those or not I don't live in the area anymore but enjoyed watching thank you
Oi ottway ohio here where are you finding historical information and photographs of Southern Ohio here I'm building museum quality models of the covered bridges and any other wood structure I can I'm selling them and making a set to see if the museum in portsmouth would have them in a art gallery there
I enjoyed this very much. I was born and raised in Portsmouth OH and I love seeing photos from the early days of the city. It would be cool to see one of these videos on Millbrook Park, past and present.
My grandfather Everett William Biggs was sent to this orphanage in 1929 after his mother died trying to give birth to his baby brother. His father died of heartbreak a month later. My grandfather was only 2 years old... He aged out of the system...he used his older brother's birthdate to enlist in the Navy and get out of the children's home. He met my grandmother in 1945 or 1946. They were married September 6th, 1947. He passed away in January 1981 at the age of 53.. Lymphoma...most likely caused by asbestos exposure from working at a shipyard in Philadelphia. 💔 Unfortunately, flooding destroyed the records at the children's home from that long ago. I had called and asked about his records a couple years ago. 💔
I'd like to find my records from there 1946
Hi Sharon! I believe you would have been there at the same time as some of my aunts. Are you part of this group on Facebook? Someone there may have some answers. facebook.com/groups/531310686997970
Great video!! I was born in 1971 and I know that Portsmouth Ohio looked a lot different from then until I was born!!!!!!? But it's surly Changed a lot since the 90's even!!!!!!? Lol " I miss Portsmouths older days!!!!!!!! God bless you all today 🙏 Shalom
Thank you for this video. I’m homesick this morning and really enjoyed seeing home back in the day
Hey Vic Distant cousin here when most of the Noel family went to Ohio, mine stayed in Romney Wv Loved the old pictures.
Hi Roger! Very cool!! So are a descendant of Joseph/Johannes/John?
That mound should've been preserved
this is really interesting and well done! My aunt lived in Portsmouth in the 1920s and was the first female to take flying lessons at the Raven Rock Flying School in 1928. My sister and I have been trying to research her life so we can write a book about her. So far I have gotten a lot of information from the newspaper, but if you have any other suggestions, photos of that time period that would be so great. I will check out the facebook page you referred to as well. Thank you!
Its beautiful there! And to see the barge and the hills is so nice reminds me of home...
Nice job!
I like how u transposed the old with the new. But how did they do that to change all the windows and all? The had to take out a whole brick exterior wall and replace with new brick? And it was so much more attractive back then... what happened???
Thanks, Silver Slingblade! I’m not sure when the old building was torn down but the current one was built on the same spot.
Fuck Portsmouth....
love this Thanks
I’m from here. When I was little, I had a nightmare that scared me so badly that I still remember it and I’m now 52. It was the floodwaters pouring over the flood wall and me swimming/drowning searching for my mom and sister. 😩. I guess seeing the flood wall and river every day must have stuck in my little mind.
Was anything found when the Waller street mound was leveled back then?
I grew up in Portsmouth in the 60's and 70's before moving to California. I learned to love Native American history and gained a life long addiction to collecting arrowheads primarily because of spending my youth there. It was a great place to grow up, but sad to see what it has become.
It's getting better..slowly.
thank you so much for doing this with my family photo. The memories are so strong.
