I've seen 1095 cut through a steel pan and still cut paper and its not even a tough steel. None of this matters without extremely thin geometry and very tiny margins. Nobody needs "super" steels or can even tell any benefit from them in real life. We're all just spoiled as heck. Ill take a well done 1095 or d2 knife over any mediocre heat treated super steel, which lets be honest, 99.9 percent of knives on the market are.

What spesifically makes one steel hard to sharpen, and why are fixed blades harder to sharpen?

I have one with the same materials. Today, while looking at the inside of it without opening it, I got the impression that the liners have small rust spots, even though I've had it for only two weeks and it's mostly been stored away. It would be quite disappointing if that's the case, as in the country where I live, this pocket knife costs twice the price when converted.

Esee 6 is my favorite knife of all time.My next one is Izulla 2.I have them all.

Just got one in carbon w the multi mount for 60$ essentially I got the knife for 44$ as the multi mount alone is around 26$ .

My Esee 3 felt too thin and short for my hand….until I made some liners for it, and WOW, what a difference!

I rather choose RR knives.. Case sucks nowadays. It’s terrible.! 😮

I have a dozen BRK's but like you I've experienced a lot of bad QC which has ultimately lead me away from the brand. I've got unsharpened grinds, VERY uneven grinds, a recurved messed up grind on a B1.25 that took forever for me to fix and a Gunny where the plunge line is so far over it doesn't even look like they hardly touched the opposite side of the knife. Uneven handle thickness. I got an Aurora Scandi and it's handle is super thin compared to the original Aurora which I loved. The ones that are actually good are excellent however roughly half my collection has bad QC so I've since went to LTWK and even though they're slightly cheaper every single one I've got has been perfect. I'll miss the countless handle options of BRK but I won't miss me having to fix my new blades.

The Tundra will be the last knife I ever part ways with. I have a decent knife collection and this is absolutely the best all-around knife for survival, bushcraft, hunting and kitchen duties. The blade is CPM-3V, which is my absolute favorite steel for a fixed blade knife . . . super tough for batoning and hard use. It can handle hitting bones when field dressing animals as well as do a nice job with skinning. Thin enough for slicing, and feather sticking. The point/tip is very capable of carving and doing fine detail work without fear of damaging it (like the Aurora) while the spine is sharp enough for starting fires with a fire steel. Perfect size for most kitchen duties as well.

This isn't a failure by any means. Every single stacked leather handle will eventually dry out and loosen with environmental changes and it will do most of it's shrinking in the first year or so. The pommel is deliberately made that way so you can simply tighten it using a slotted screwdriver or Marble's pommel tool (look it up and keep on sheath). This is a good thing, if it had been peened or pinned like a Kabar you would have no easy way of tightening when the washers shrink. Look how many 80 year old WW2 knives are still around but have shrunken leather handles.

Most people wont be doing things that make "super steel" necessary. It's cost & sharpening time vs what you can do with it compared to cheaper knives is still just too far apart. I've been using knives, machetes & even training with swords for decades & i've lost knives, i've broken them etc. They are tools that are meant to be used up over time. Everybody seems to get hung up on "the indestructible knife" & these companies use that to fleece people.

I want a jg3 in s35 with g10 scales… would be a great game knife

I also just order a aurora and a mini aurora and a alpha bravo 1 Lt and a gunny all 4 was perfect but will not buy a folder and whatever else has bad reviews

ESEE 4HM in 3V with a 90 degree spine would be pretty ideal. I love my 4HM, but those 2 changes would bring it to the next level.

I love this knife! i use it as my little shitty. I use it for things i dont wana use my nice stuff on It is perfect for chopping rocks and throwing at trees. Sometimes i attack 55gal barrels with it. 10/10 would recommend for a fun ass knife to abuse for fun.

Im glad you mentioned the Master Hunter, some Cold Steel knives are oddly overlooked.

I want to love Esee more, but there's just better options out there. For US made, you got Architect, which have better steel, handles, sheathes, and almost limitless custom options. Even their 1095 is from Tops, which gives you differential heat treat, so better toughness and edge retention. Otherwise you can choose 3V or Magnacut, all with optimal heat treat from White River and Peter's Heat Treat. So you can essentially have your cake and eat it, and Esee becoming outclassed. Again, I want to love them, and i like the s35vn small blades, but otherwise it's just not it.

Love the 4hm and the 4 in s35vn wish they would come out with a 4hm in s35vn i sadly sold my 4 hm to buy the s35vn version and miss the handle and how comfortable it was

Since you're comparing Cold Steel to Fallkniven I can just say that Fallkniven are on another level of quality. That is why they cost 2x more. That is why I like Fallkniven. They don't compromise when it comes to manufacturing. They could easily have shifted production from Japan to Taiwan to make more profit but they didn't. Not to mention, Fallkniven's customer service is A+. Cold steel's customer service is lousy. Just speaking from experience.

Hairdryer the sheath edge then stand on it and the retention problem is solved. It works great. I'd leave it to cool properly before you insert it into the sheath again though.

And rust shpuldnt ever really be an issue. Wipe it down at the end of the day if you used it or soon after using, oil..i use the hell out of my knives and i don't think knive had rust spotting or anything

Have the original 6, 4hm, and jg3.. looking to add a stainless xancudo soon for hunting. My favorite by far right now is the jg3.. wish they made it in stainless with g10 handles for hunting… such a great blade

Add Casstrom and TBS and DBK and Joker to the list of near look-alikes in the quality Bushcraft knife catagory. I'm sure there are others. Minor feature differences in any of these. Some have very thick steel stock (4mm) for chopper/chomper bush action. All make great knives. Different grinds, different steels. Lots of custom-made knife options out there as well. Too many choices in my view. Drives me a little crazy trying to decide. (But good for collectors.) At the end of the day or night, it's back to basics for this bushdude. Mora Companion HD, or 5ll--a la Kochansky. Sometimes simple is the way to go.
