Some footage from the bee yard dealing with swarming or about to swarm honeybee colonies. Been busy on the homestead and let them get a bit ahead of me. Making some emergency splits into mating nucs so I maximize my odds of getting new queens. #beekeeping #beehive #honey #oklahoma

Moving Honey Bees from Langstroth to Layens Hives | Part One
Просмотров 8876 месяцев назад
Got access to a Layens hive and I'm interested to see how they work. I suspect the bees will do just fine, I'm actually more concerned with how i'm going to get them set up since I run all Langstroth equipment. To give the hive style a fair shake, I'm not going to wait for a swarm. The bees will need to build all new wax before winter so I'm getting them started at the early as possible. Follow...

Oxalic Acid Vapor (OAV) in Observation Hive

I wanted to see what the OAV looked like inside the hive. I figured the honeybees would move it around, but wanted to see for myself. Temperature was around 45 F. This at least seams to confirm the benefits of having the hive as air tight as possible. The longer it stays in the box, the better.

      I don’t think it matters much. Some class is tented and that might block the sun a little, so something clear might be best. Can’t say I’ve tried plastic since I’ve got glass on hand. Plastic could warp from the heat?

    How so u feed that 2 frame Nuc? Thx

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney 4 месяца назад

      I typically don’t. Mainly use these during a flow. I find it makes everything easier. But you definitely can. I prefer feeding with jars on something this small. I use an old fence picket or something like that as a lid and drill a 71mm hole in it. You could drill a smaller hole and just sit jar on top, but I prefer the stability of having the hole so it goes around the lid and securely hold the jar. I have feeding holes in my 4-frame nuc lids permanently, but the two frame nucs are narrow and it would weaken the lid to much. So that’s why I just use scrap lumber as a lid if feeling is necessary.

    Wow, that's some very cool video to watch of the Queen. I'm still so new to beekeeping and don't know much but I assume that's the workers pushing the Queen around and preventing her from laying trying to get her thinned down and ready to swarm? This is the first video I've seen of your channel and it was enjoyable to watch. You have a beautiful set up with all your hives, I'm jealous. Best of luck to you this season. Greetings from Salt Lake City, Utah where I'm trying to figure out how to manage a single hive.

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney 5 месяцев назад

      That is correct. They run her around prevent her from laying as many eggs. She needs to slim down before they can swarm. Thankfully I moved her to a new location hopefully interrupting the process. The foragers will return to the original location when I left queen cells. She had a small cluster in winter and absolutely exploded in the spring. I like the genetics.

    how about cutting out old wax from a different frame and placing it in one of the newer ones securing it with rubber bands. then have that one sitting inbetween the other two new frames to help encourage the bees to build the honeycomb the right way.

    • @DRIECUTHoney

    Will a Layens hive frame fit into a double stacked nuc? If they would, why not just use the Layens frames in a double nuc and then transfer them after they work them? What would happen if you put an unwaxed frame next to them, they might like the waxed beads over the plastic.

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney 6 месяцев назад

      A layens frame is narrower and shorter than a double stack nuc. Essentially I’m doing what you’re describing, only I put fully drawn comb next to them so they would only have the space in the layens frames available. I don’t have any wax foundation to put in the layens frames, if I did that would probably be ideal. Now a window on the other 3 sides and it's a mini home. Nice william

      My hive from the OA video even had a sunroof, lol. And they are building brood against the glass.

      As you know, there are other ways to do it that will be a bit more visually appealing. I needed to add this window for an upcoming video and figured I would do it in a way that most people could replicate without much effort. It’s worth the effort in my opinion. I love peeking in after work.

    I keep thinking William. It would be grand fun to have Fred Dunn's high-end cameras.

      @DRIECUTHoney 6 месяцев назад

      It would. Only it’s not as simple as just having the camera. Unfortunately it does require skill, and tones of time. The bees are raising brood right up against the glass. Cool to see

      And they ended up moving that nectar. Like it’s not there currently. Interesting how they move stuff around the hive.

    Thanks for the video, William. That was neat being able to see inside the hive like that. They looked super busy. Looks like the spring build up has begun!

      Interesting that they chose to build on the glass and the edge of wood. Illustrates their preference to build directly over the cluster. Obviously temperature from cluster is a major factor since they can’t build if conditions are not correct.

    You better get ready William, thanks for sharing your time and I look forward to your videos. I think I may have to check out my display hive this summer, it's huge and looks kinda hippyish.😂

      It’s handy being able to see what’s going on at any time without having to open the hive. I’ll probably make more. I also want to do an observation hive inside like many people do

  • @MinnesotaBeekeeper
    @MinnesotaBeekeeper 6 месяцев назад

    Wow. neat to watch William. Do you do any spring frame equalizations?

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Mike. In short, yes. But I don’t equalize the whole yard once like a big operation would. Basically I’ll take from colonies that are in danger of getting too big too early and donate to smaller hives. So I’m making my production hives equal, but not necessarily making the whole yard equal.

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney 6 месяцев назад

      @@MinnesotaBeekeeper I sorta think of my hives like there are three categories. 1: Production hives 2: Colonies I’ll split aggressively 3: Recourse hives Ideally the production hives should equal since you want them to be as big as possible without swarming so they peak for honey flow.
