- Hoping this tip helps. Jigs can be a game changer for anything you have to make over and over again. Bottom boards, hive lids, bee pallets, and the list goes on. This will save time when salvaging material to build DIY bee hives. #beekeeping #honey #oklahoma
Good stuff William. All great ideas.
Thank you! Always appreciate the kind words
Your right about the jigs William. They really help speed things up. Thanks for the tips. Those skunks sound like a real aggravation. Hopefully the higher elevation will help.
Hopefully. It’s not the most convenient spot for an electric fence
Ok, to start with, I didn’t know who you were on RUclips when we met up. I been knowing you for a while now….Second, I think you wood working guys don’t have any idea of the gift you have in order to do what you do with wood. What seems simple and easily visualized in your mind to how to do things doesn’t come together as easily in minds like mine. Once a jog is built, then I’m in and life is easy. But the way you folks are able to form that out in your mind is a true gift and talent.
Wow, thanks for the kind words Mike. We first met in Tennessee at hive life, but had a conversation most recently at the expo in Kentucky. Always a pleasure. Of course I have been subscribed to your channel for a while. I did pretty good at posting regularly for a few months this year but haven’t put out a video in a few weeks because I’m swamped. I even filmed a swarm trap build. lol haven’t had the time to put the trap out let alone edit the video. You know how it is. It takes time to make videos and I’m not skilled in that department. Thanks again for leaving a comment
Thanks for the tips! Good luck with the skunk problem, we have been seeing more around here this year.
Skunks are one of my nemesis. They also eat just about anything small enough to get their hands on. Had a bunch of quail fall pray last year. They are vicious predators
@@DRIECUTHoney I know they love to eat eggs. They’ll also come to you when you call “here kitty, kitty” 😳
I don't know about perfect cuts, but the mullet is perfect.
I should preface, perfect cuts for a guy who has a mullet. Standards very lol
@@DRIECUTHoney 🤣
Subbed. Just finish building a bunch of gear. My table saw is ancient. Not a single safety feature. Kind of a PITA to set up the fence etc.......need to think upgrade.
Table saws are super handy. I was fortunate to find the one I have at an auction and got it cheap. I was surprised it worked when I got it home. The one I had before was a super cheap portable unit that would try and fall over, lol. Like you’re dealing with, the fence was trash. I would typically clamp a board down it was so bad. Thanks for the sub.
The jig is a good idea. I have all of my colonies elevated to about 16". My pallet system will have them at 11". I hope skunks dont become a problem.
It’s hit or miss around here. Last year I had no issues at that location. Guess I’ll have to play it by ear and adapt. If it was more open I would have probably thrown up an electric fence
Jigs are so darn useful. I live by them. On the other side, Mr. Vince is insisting on not using a jig box to assemble 400 frames. This should be interesting William. Thanks for posting.
What is he going to do, just one at a time? That was the first beekeeping jig I built. I can’t imagine assembling frames without a box jig
Is it even safe to build frames with no jig? Will he hand nail them, or somehow balance them in a way that slows him to shoot a staple so it doesn’t catch a finger?
@@DRIECUTHoney Have no idea. He has built cabinets for 69 years so. I will have to film it.
To deter skunks on my hives I screwed carpet tack strips onto the landing boards (tacks facing up)... then when the skunk tries grabbing bees their paws get chewed up and encourages them to look elsewhere. Strips don't even bother the bees either.
That’s not a bad idea. I’ll have to try that when I move more bees to that yard. Already have the ones out there elevated now, but I’ll move some splits out there eventually. Maybe I’ll put a game camera to see if I can catch one in the act
That is what I did, I built jigs into my bench, sure speeds up cutting. Thanks for sharing your time William.
I want to build a cabinet to house my miter saw. That way I can have a permanent fence with common lengths ready to go. Space is an issue
I think I set my hives at 16”-18” hight . I do not remember off the top of my head what the measurements was but I stopped that probably at the 16-18” mark . Good luck.
I’ve heard that’s ideal for skunks. Someone also mentioned using carpet tack strips. I haven’t seen any scat since I elevated the pallets, but now I’ll be doing more lifting of supers. Always a trade off
@@DRIECUTHoney ya I have not heard of the carpet tacks but maybe it does . Give it a try.
