Mongols conqured filthy rich territories monopolizing world's trade yet somehow managed to burn all the money in endless wars instead of making Asia most prosperous land for thousand years to come.
Great point! The Mongols' relentless conquests were indeed costly, and they didn't focus on long-term prosperity. Thanks for highlighting this!
Dey left, European are certainly no match for the mongols in their prime
True, the Mongols were a powerful force during their peak.
Good job Unkari
I’m sorry but Hungary was not a small country in the Middle Ages. In fact it was one of the great powerhouses of Europe that time.
Exactly, Hungary was one of the major powers during that era.
Hungary had one of the largest armies in Europe at that time with 100 000.
Indeed, Hungary fielded one of the largest armies of the time.
The birth of the Hussars. BTW, there was no such thing as "ruSSia " in this time period.
Absolutely, Hussars were born in Hungary, and Russia as we know it didn’t exist.
The king was not "Bella" but Béla. "Béla knew what was at stake."
Thank you for correcting that! Yes, King Béla made difficult choices in a very challenging time. I appreciate your insight!
uh ... Khan died and they returned home ...
Yes, exactly! The Khan’s death had a huge impact, leading to the Mongol retreat from Europe. Thanks for watching!
The 1st mongol invasion lasted 8 months or longer and mongols suffered heavy loses too... hence their retreatment, and Hungary did defeat the mongols with the polish kings but later /the 2nd and 3rd mongol invasion/ ....hungarian archeologists recently excaveted about a dozen of massgraves on Alfold/Plain with only women and children skeletons.... complet villages and towns were wiped out that area suffered 70-80% population loss and Julianus was a hungarian monks
This is an excellent summary! The archaeological findings reveal a tragic part of history. Thank you for sharing these important details!

The U.S. didn't exist back then. The Mongol invasions happened centuries earlier.

Hungary did defeat the mongols with the polish kings but later /the 2nd and 3rd mongol invasion/ ...
While the Mongols did return, the second invasion had a different outcome. Hungary was prepared, with lessons learned from the first encounter.
You're right. Hungary managed to resist with help from Polish allies, but the Mongols made multiple attempts.
Not the euroeans, no no. The HUNGARIAN!!!
Hungary did defeat the mongols with the polish kings but later /the 2nd and 3rd mongol invasion/ ...
Absolutely! Hungary's resilience was unmatched during that time.
No Empire survived the invasion of Hungary. No matter it's was wictory ore defeat. Not even one of them is an Empire to day.
Hungary didn't crush the Mongols. They had to withdraw because of the theath of the Great Khan and also due to overstretched communication lines.
partly true , the 1st mongol invasion lasted 6-8 months and mongols suffered heavy loses too hence their retreatment, and Hungary did defeat the mongols with the polish kings but later /the 2nd and 3rd mongol invasion/
Do not comment if you are not informed. You are confusing the invasions (or you think there was only one) There were 2 major attacks by the Mongols against the Kingdom of Hungary: the first in 1241, by Batu-khan, when Hungary was devastated (Battle of Mohi), and was saved by the death of the Great Khan, which made the Mongol army return to Asia (that's what you're referring to) The second major invasion was in 1285 (that's what the title refers to) when the Kingdom of Hungary successfully and decisively rejected the Mongol invasion led by Talabuga - khan.
Correct, the Mongols had to withdraw due to leadership issues and logistical challenges.
Thanks for the video. The video does not focus on the first Mongol invasion, but let me note that the battle of Muhi was not so one-sided. According to Mongolian sources, it was one of their toughest battles, Batu considered retreating after his own bodyguards fell, Subotai saved him at the last moment with the encircling maneuver. After that, the Hungarians were indeed defeated, but the Mongol defeats played a major role in the withdrawal of the Mongols in 1242. The sources also mention that the Mongols maintained two cemeteries at that time, and only those who perished in Hungary in 1241-42 were buried in one. So the first campaign was not a complete success, and the second was a complete failure for them.
Ironically, the Mongols matured and reverted to Islam while the hungarians sought depravity and followed the dev IL.
Good point! The battle of Muhi was indeed challenging for both sides.
Psst = The mongol + tatars + other , came to hungary to push out the judeochristian leadership , to free up hungarians , and establish the old hungarian system . The united forces failed , because they forces attacked poland , hungary and the southern europian countries , instead of one by one ! They didn't came to central europe to conquer , but free up them from vatikan . Etc..
Interesting perspective! The focus of this video is mainly on the military conflict, but the broader political and religious motivations are also worth exploring. Thank you for sharing!

Nice to hear. But you know, Hungary did not defeat the mongols and they exterminated about 2/3 of the population. :-( They have also played a role in the disappearance of the traditional Hungarian royal family (House of Arpad) in 1301.
You raise a valid point. While Hungary did not defeat the Mongols in the traditional sense, the video focuses on the eventual end of the Mongol invasions. We appreciate your historical insights!

Amit nem tudsz! A muhi csata 1241. április 11.-12. Az Alföldön kisebb erődítmények voltak, ahol a lakosok egybe gyűltek, és ellenáltak, míg a mongolok fel nem számolták ezeket az erődöket. @@HistoricalVeils We have a lot to catch up. We lost 75% of our land mass and 60% of our population after World War 1. Some 40% was returned prior to World War2 but the Anglo-Saxon powers with the assistance of the Soviets, they again stole back these territories under the Paris Peace Treaty, signed in February 1947, territories that we have managed to regain and subsequently lost again. As a result, our ethnic brother Hungarians are once again are in captivity, as second class citizens in the captured lands of the Carpathian Basin, which for 1,000 years was the Kingdom of Hungary. This is one reason why we must learn about our past history, in order to learn about the injustices of today and the past. The English nearly formed an alliance with the mongols to defeat the Egyptian mamaluks in the levant. However, this never happened as the English had turned their attention to Scotland and William Wallace.
That's a fascinating point! The shifting alliances and strategic priorities in history often change the course of events. Thanks for your insightful comment.
Some additions - in Hungary, the earlier arrival of Cumans was met with resistance/opposition by many, and the murder of their leader Kötöny/Kuten, led to the departure of a potentially important light cavalry fighting force as well as destruction as the Cumans left, even before the Mongol invasion. Second, although the Muhi battle was a huge loss for Hungarians, it was was at a heavy cost for the Mongols as well, plus along the way of invasion, recent archeological findings show that continued resistance by the Hungarian population further added to the loss of military strength of the Mongols. Third, several fortified towns and fortresses could resist the Mongols, and all these together were sufficient to to block the continued stay of Mongols; whether Khan Ögedei's death was the last event necessitating the withdrawal, is still uncertain, even though Batu, as Joshi's descent, was considered to be unfit as candidate for the Great Khan title.
Thank you for sharing this detailed perspective! Historical battles and the intricate dynamics behind them add so much depth to our understanding of these events.
It does not explain the desired information.
Thank you for your input. We will work on providing more detailed explanations in future videos. Your feedback is appreciated!
? Rome did NOT "look East". They were busy enough in Spain and the Po Valley. The fact is that Phillip of Macedon, without provocation, attacked Rome while she was fighting for her life against Hannibal. It was the Greek cities and Leagues who begged Rome to free them from Macedonian domination twice (200, 172BC), and who brought the Syrian King into Greece to "free" them (192BC)..even though there was nobody, Macedonian or Roman, to be "freed" from. Nor is it mentioned that the Romans withdrew their troops from Greece after each conflict leaving them to their own devices, and did not make Macedon a province after deposing Perseus, but made it into independent republics. It was the constant squabbles and internal strife within the Greek world that left a power vacuum that the Romans unwillingly filled by annexing Macedonia ~146BC. Greece itself did not actually become a Roman province until ~46BC. And even then many of the city states and leagues retained a measure of self-government (internally).
Great observation! Rome was indeed focused on other regions during that time, and their involvement in Greece came more out of necessity than a desire to expand eastward.
@HistoricalVeils That's right. The Romans were drawn (late and unwillingly) into the Adriatic because their Italian allies' trade was being preyed upon by Illyrian pirates. See E. S. Gruen "The Hellenistic World and the Coming of Rome" for an elaboration of this thesis.
It was just too cold.
True, the harsh climate might have been a factor.
They only had one rival. At different times, first it was the greeks, then carthage, Egyptians and then finally the Britons.
Good point! Rome had many rivals throughout its history.
The Huns?
Weak analysis. There was nothing in Northern Europe that would attract the Romans. They had enough trouble fighting the German tribes without trying to get beyond them to engage some other barbarians.
This is not true, Britain was the tin capital of the ancient world. There was plenty from the Britons that they wanted. Can't speak for the Germanics however.
Interesting! Britain's resources were indeed valuable to Rome.
Fair critique! Rome did face significant challenges with the Germanic tribes.
