Talk about messaging... this went over full time to brain wash the salesmen.. The Impala was restyled on the GM B platform for the first time for 1961. [Dealer Film] 1965 Belair and Chevelle vs Mopars! The curves vs the straight
The trade in car is a 1963 4-window Sedan deVille. In April 1969 I traded in my 1964 ebony black 4-window sedan for a 1966 hardtop Sedan deVille which I still own today. I also own a 1961 6-window series 62 sedan and a 1989 Brougham Sedan. I have been a member of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club since 1984.
I love both but I've had my 52 Plymouth for 17 years and love it in my opinion the Plymouths are still built like the 1940s style. I love the Plymouths big curves better then how the ford was more flat and square but the next year Plymouth went with flatter panels in 53. But I noticed that they didn't mention all of Plymouths safety features like the double wheel cylinders in both front wheels for faster stopping and some other things. I will stick with my Plymouth for my choice but Ford has a better wagon
The 56 Buick was only one of Harley Earl's great designs.
So far pretty much all of theses film strips I ha have seen have been produced by Mopar, so of course they will say their car is better. Buick is the better looking car to me. It it more feminine and graceful looking. Besides the Doge would be priced against an Oldsmobile, the Desoto a Buick.
"Tha Pljmouth scharkskinn...luch at theis colours."
Mopar quality was a problem
In 58 they were fixing them... but the reputation was hurt and the recession hit...
They rushed out the 1957 models and they did have problems.
They were supposed to have been the 58s, so what you bought was a mass-produced prototype, with all that entails.
Do us all a favour and NOT colourize the footage - instead ENHANCE the existing BW film - this AI colourization is far from perfected and only ruins the video.
I can only enhance if it's on the film, for some reason this film had it. It's often "off color" due to the age of these films but I was able to color correct this one. I think the AI colorizing is getting better, the second part of this film was black and white and turned out fairly well.
How about all of Christine’s problems
Just make sure your girlfriend doesn't punch her seats...
I remember office furniture like that well into the 1970s... blocky wood desks and heavy wood chairs. My grandfather had an ancient typewriter like that until he passed. But that style of telephone was phased out before my time. It is surprising that mid century modern office furniture and decor are not in this training film.
We still have that style of phone! In the bedroom, a super rare "Mediterranean Blue" one. I have a collection of phones, that blue one, a rare ivory pre-war version, a bright red one, (post-war), and probably 20 other phones. One in particular is VERY rare.
@@jamesbosworth4191 Very cool!
Too bad the 57s were so bad. They gave Chrysler a bad reputation that it never could shake off. The 58s really were better, but not many people were willing to take a chance, plus the sharp recession, meant that only a little over half as many 58s as 57s were sold.
Chrysler Corporation lost market share in 1958... with Plymouth even further behind both Chevrolet and Ford. After 1957, Plymouth was never again a serious competitor in the low-price, full-size market. However, the Valiant was very popular...but compact cars were not nearly so profitable.
@@SpockvsMcCoy Like I said, they never recovered from the poor quality 57s.
it did hurt them for a LONG time... they stole so many GM buyers and they all were like "uhh Mopars have so many problems" and they went back to GM never to try Mopars again.
Not mentioned because it hadn't happened yet if this was a pre-launch film, those early air spring setups Ford and GM rolled out for '58 were so unreliable most cars with them were converted to the standard setup under warranty.
yeah they did mention how they had to have "air compressors" in the show room to keep the cars off the ground... so many jokes about owners walking out the door in the morning and the car was on the ground...
Part of the "unreliable" problem is that many motorists just couldn't come to grips with the fact that some of the air will leak out overnight. Check out buses from the 50s and 60s with air suspension in the barn - many will be leaning to one side or sitting low. They air up after you start them, same with the cars with air suspension. Another problem with the air-ride cars, though, is that you couldn't reach underneath and pull open the water drains. Water collecting in the system causes many often severe problems. Buses are high enough so you can.
Awesome! Love it.... Would love to make a hot rod from one.. Aka daily driver!
Yeah thats what I'm doing... taking a Belvedere and street customing it..
Love it 👍
First viewer!
De Soto here preaching "form follows function" as good design. The next year they hired wacky Virgil Exner as their VP of Design and the form follows function concept went out the window at Mopar for almost ten years.
I’d take the Bonnie since they dumped the totally unreliable northstar the year before
I think the Bonneville is the sharper looking car...
For 1958, all Dodge and Plymouth cars, along with DeSoto Firesweep does equipped with 4 headlights as standard and legalized in all 48 Continental States.
Знаете я обожаю Крайслеры 1957-1962 годов . Но автомобили GM по своему красивы как и FORD
My mom's family had a 1957 Nomad new, yellow with a white top. The Chevrolet is considered one of if not the best looking car of the decade.
Not at the time... Actually the Plymouth won all the awards...
Thanks for sharing. My mom's family bought a 1957 Chevrolet. They had a Nomad yellow with white top. They didn't have it very long, as there were 6 kids, and another 5 on the way by 1964. It's transmission went bad and my grandfather went to a Cadillac, he bought a 1959 Ranchero for his company.
Thanks for sharing. The reason there aren't many of these around anymore is they all rusted away.
not many left of these... and they aren't repopping like 57 Chevys... I think 57 Fords are even less known.
Thanks for sharing
I've always heard that compared to GM and Ford in the 50's and 60's, Mopar always was strong in the powertrain area but a step down in quality of everything else.
they took a quality hit in 57... when they sold the most... and soured all the new people but the 57 cars were the 58's...
Is that George Fennamen speaking in this?
They never attributed the actors/speakers in these... strange with the amount of effort that went into them... They didn't have JPGS... they had to film each drawing... take a photo of each scene and then record the sound track... develop a story
Isn't it universally known that you never mention you have a trade-in until you've settled on a price for the new car?
LOL I've seen some car salesman get REALLY ticked when you do this... Actually what I did once was see a guy shopping for a car in a 86 Fiero GT sitting in the isle and he was next to it... I asked "are you trading that in? How much? 3500$"... LOL I said ill give you 4500$... The dealer got really p*ssed when he found out I bought the car out from under him... the car was easily worth 6k...
"what a car to park infront of your girlfriends house" Yeah, it even gets jealous of her too.
And locks the doors :)
Built to last.
I just wanted to say that I love your content. These adds are so much fun. I was born in 1957 so I do remember some of the newer ones. Keep em' coming. Thank You for posting. 👍👍
Thanks Larry.. I find these things pretty amazing also... Funny how they were never shown to the public.
Thanks, I had not seen this interesting sales training program. Typically the second year styling facelift wasn’t as attractive as the first year cars, but the 1958 Plymouth was an exception. The stylists really cleaned up a fundamentally very good design. As nice looking as these cars were, the popularity of the tail fin era had already started to fade. Sales dropped about 40% from 1957, and the fin style never again achieved a lot of sales success.
The recession didn't help :) But Chrysler took it on the nose when the quality issues popped up because they rushed the 57s to market
Yup, it looks much like the 57, but it was a better car, something I knew even as a kid. Shame though that most people wouldn't spring for the undercoating, even as late as the 70s.
Bring back Plymouth
Christine was a Fury not a Belvedere!
Several Belvedere hardtop coupes were altered to appear as a Fury in the 1983 movie. Also, both the 1957 and 1958 Furys were only available in a factory beige and not red.
It's funny because I hear so many say Christine was a Belvedere and not a Fury due to the red paint and silver trim. The fact is she has elements of both models even though she is supposed to be a Fury.
I admit that I have never been a fan of Virgil Exner's Forward look designs. IMO The 58 Plymouth is probably the nicest looking vehicle that he designed. I don't know what happened after that but some of those early '60s mopar's were pretty hideous looking. The full size Dodge was a disaster that couldn't decide how it wanted to look. The Dart wasn't much better. The Plymouth Valiant was OK But anything would look okay sitting next to the monstrosity that was the dodge Dart in the early '60s. I often have a mental picture of Virgil Exner sitting at his desk and telling his helpers "Hey, remember all those weird front ends and rear ends that we considered too ugly and couldn't ever use on anything. So we just tossed them in the warehouse. Go get all that stuff and bring it to me I have some ideas on how we can use it". That's how his designs always seem to me. You could look at the front and it looked really nice and you could look at the rear and it looked pretty nice but when you put them together in one vehicle it was just fugly. I don't know any other way to put it.
The 60 Dart was well received. The 61, though, wasn't, but I never saw anything wrong with it, but I also like the 62 Dart, even though most people didn't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.
I like the full-size 60 Dodge as well, and all the other ChryCo cars of that year, but I admit the 61 Plymouth was not a thing of beauty.
The 58 Plymouth was certainly tops of the group... My other top cars are the 58 Dodge Regal Lancer, 60 Imperial, 57 Desoto Adv, the 59 Dodge has grown on me also...
@@autochronicles8667 I personally love the 58 and 60 desotos as well. the 59 is mid and the 61 is definitely the ugliest
@@jamesbosworth4191the '60 Dart was well received because it was a full sized Dodge priced down with Plymouth.
IMHO the 58 Plymouth is the best looking car for that period, given a choice btw that and 57 Chevy.
They won all the awards but the rush to market hurt em in 58... and the recession hit.
At 2:15 all I could think of is Moochie saying, “Hey you ain’t mad are you?”
yeah i was thinking that would make a good thumbnail
Chrysler Corporation did make some quality improvements to their 1958 models after all of the glitches in their 1957 models. However, their former quality reputation was shattered in the public's mind. Despite the Big Three automakers suffering a sales decline in the 1958 Recession, Chrysler Corporation also lost significant market share. Plymouth sales were now even further behind both Chevrolet and Ford. The 1958 Plymouth Fury had incredible styling... but I would have chosen a 1958 Impala for its better quality at that time.
The 57's were the 58 cars... they rushed because Ford and GM spies go their designs... so they had to rush... It really hurt losing that year of quality shake down...
@@autochronicles8667 It was not until the 1965 model year that Plymouth sold as many new cars as in 1957. However, their sales in the 1965 model year included both the Valiant and mid-size Satellite... with the 1965 Fury models only selling 330,000 units. After 1957 Plymouth was never again a serious competitor in the full-size market.
Chrysler's sales, all divisions, was only about half of 57, but today, it is easier to find the 58s. Most of the 57s disintegrated decades ago.
Many don't realize that. Those 57s were mass-produced prototypes.
I love those refrigerator-style door handles! 💋
I still have a 1978 ram charger. Bought new. Red 4x4 just like in the ad. 4 spd 360 v8, soft & hard top. 323K. Still going strong!
My Dad bought a 57 Belvedere the year I was born. I'll never forget that "Atomic Frown" speedometer! lol
I really like the rear end on this model...and the one on the car isn't bad either.
Not mentioned of the station wagon was that Chrysler Corp only had one 1957-59 wagon body, so you got the same loadspace in the most basic Plymouth wagon as in the fanciest Chrysler Town & Country.
well there was a 2 door wagon... But yes they all used the same body.
Note the fit and finish in the close ups!
Maybe your are talking about the headlight trim... yeah that was defiantly not fitted... This was actually like this from the factory on all the cars... that wasn't exactly poor installation or manufacturing.
That was pretty bad, but I never saw one like that. All were fitted OK.
Most were THIS bad.
That old rotary lawnmower is cool!!
Yeah that thing... :)
I'm sold... I'll take a red one!
guy: Here's my new. Plymouth. Isn't it a beauty? Smarter girl: I was expecting a DeSoto.......Adventuer!
Cmon though... If you got a Plymouth you still got a pretty girl... :)
I'm first! What do I win?
A wonderful hearted comment! :)
In the 1993 imperial styles mine had 2 spare tires. A full size with extra matching hubcap and a donut space mounted against a rail in back of seat. . A feature not available in the towncar series of the same years. And the air suspension was weight & height adjustable. And had flip headights. That stays clean until needed.
I wonder what dealer was the first to start the "additional dealer markup" concept for popular models and on what make and model of car it was. I know back in the mid 80's it existed because I went car shopping with my sister and the Mazda dealers had a huge markip on the 2nd gen 1986 RX7's. She had done her homework on what an RX7 should cost with a fair profit for the dealer and she had the money and was going to make an offer just below sticker price. They wouldn't even consider sticker price and tried to steer her to a 626 or something else they were trying to get rid of. We were frustrated that Mazda advertising had lured us onto the lot assuming sticker price.
