First time fishing this beautiful beat on the upper Tay with my good friend Glyn Phillips. Great fly water with favorable conditions, we had hoped to connect with a few more nevertheless an enjoyable and tranquil day - some tough wading!

I was very kindly invited to fish this beat in the evening by David Mckerron, so took the opportunity to focus on the hitch technique on a few of the pools. Managed a small but perfect grilse and got to see the take!

This was a lucky catch - initially I walked past this run then decided to give it a go. Just started to lift into next cast when leader became stuck, flexed tip to free it and then realised it was a fish :)

It has been a lean spell but fantastic to catch this beautiful, fat grilse. I've seen some cracking salmon in the Pitlochry dam viewing chamber recently which has kept me going despite not seeing too many fish on the beat.

Fished right bank on Friday 13th and dropped by the river late afternoon on Saturday 14th see Jonathon Campbell and his son Nathan fishing at the top of the beat at Poltreigh. Jonny had a 7lb fish in the morning from the same pool.

First fish through pool following the floods... much changed at the top and significant gravel infill to the middle deep section. Really strong winds and soft sand bank causing me to slip just as the fish took the fly Beautiful, hard fighting 13lb autumn salmon.

What fly line do you use? Cracking fish!
This was with my 18gram switch rod - normally use the short cut heads with this - float and Fl/I/S4. I think in this video I had an 18g integrated running line floating head line from Zpey.

Great video! That 10’11” 18gr switch looks like a very cool rod to fish with! Do you use the Salmologic heads?
Yes - mostly use the short cuts - full floater and the FL/S4 - either a S4 coated leader or a tapered nylon leader. I have an integrated floater for more delicate presentation.

@@rangerwhite5165 short cut head - floater and Fl/S4 - mostly with s4 polyleader or nylon tapered leader ~ 12ft or so. Also have an integrated WF for delicate /low water option
Benefit of the shorter heads is that you can strip but also carry a heavier tube more easily if necessary!

Sorry I don't tie my own but have found out the following...its a tapered US tube, sourced in Sweden and hard to find - madflies2020.

Sorry will try harder next time but this was a difficult place to stand with deep water at feet and a steep bank - almost fell in releasing it and Glyn had to pull me back!

How much is a ticket for the garry?
Best options are Pitlochry Angling Club - Ruan Ruarie, and FishPal for Pol Dornie (Atholl Estates) but need to take all three rods

Not fished it for a couple of weeks - last outing was Ruan Ruarie at good height but quiet. However fish visibly populating Pol Dornie now - seeing them regularly when walking dog.
