Here's some more accurate lyrics for anyone else who likes to sing along :) Let your quacks and newspapers be cutting their capers And curing the vapors the scratch and the gout With their medical potions, their salves and their lotions Upholding their notions, it's mighty put out. Who can tell the true physic of all that's pathetic And pitch to the devils, cramp, colic and spleen You'll find it I think if you take a big drink With your mouth to the brink of a jug of poteen So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys Oh what botheration, no bolt in the nation Can give consolation like whiskey me boys. While a child in me cradle, me nurse with her ladle Was filling her mouth with a notion of pap When a drop from the bottle fell into me throttle I capered and scrambled clear out of her lap On the floor I lay crawlin' and screaming and bawling 'Til father and mother soon came to the fore All weeping and cryin' they thought I was dyin' Then found I only was a-cryin' for more. So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys Oh lord how they'd chuckle if babes in their truckles Could only be suckled on whiskey me boys. Through my youthful aggression, through times of depression Me childhood's impression still clung to me mind And at school or in college the basis of knowledge I never could gulp 'til with whiskey combined And as older I'm growin' times ever bestowin' On Maden's potation, the flavor so fine And how ere they may lecture on Jove and his nectar Itself is the only true liquid divine So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys Oh lord, it's the right thing for courtin' and fightin' There's nowt so excitin' as whiskey me boys. Come guess me this riddle, what beats pipes and fiddle What's hotter than mustard and milder than cream What best wets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal What's sweeter than honey and stronger than steam What'll make the dumb talk, what'll make the lame walk, What's the elixir of life and philospher's stone And what helped Mr. Brunnell to dig the Thames Tunnel Wasn't whiskey me boys from ould Inisowen ? So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys Oh lord knows I wonder, if lightnin' and thunder Was made from the plunder of whiskey me boys. So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys So raise your glass high - Raise 'em up to the sky And then sing all the praises of Whiskey, me boys

This appears to be a unique version, i.e. different from the Traffic and Jethro Tull ones. Its probably even a different song. It's the first one I found and, in my opinion, the best.

My dad joined the 69th New York around 1937 & fought with the regiment in the Pacific (Company E). It was officially designated the 165th Infantry of the New York 27th Division ("Orion"). After the war, it went back to the 42nd ("Rainbow") Division, which is why we had lots of Rainbow Division patches around our house. By then, he rose to the rank of captain. We grew up in the regiment, & it was massive fun to go to the armory with him. Everything was so Irish, Irish, Irish. Faugh e Ballagh! ("Clear the Way") and Erin go Bragh! We weren't Irish, but Fr. Duffy's rule (according to dad) was any non-Irish in the regiment were still "honorary Irishmen." Indeed, the winner of the Medal of Honor in the 165th in WWII was Alejandro Ruiz! One story dad told: Ft. Ord, CA, 1942, the men of the regiment refused when ordered to embark on to a British transport ship taking them to Hawaii, & did so (despite threats of court martial) only when the British Union jack was hauled down. When dad retired, he joined the 69th Veterans Corps (Fr. Duffy Chapter of the VFW), which met downstairs in the basement of the armory. That armory (still there on Lexington Ave & 25th St.) had a huge assembly area for drilling & training, & also used for public athletic tournaments. The NY Knickerbockers played there before the new Madison Square Garden, & we sometimes heard the games being played. The main lobby & stairways had display cases full of very cool WWI & WWII memorabilia. Dad was the champion sharpshooter then, & he left his M-1 Garand on indefinite loan to Co. E. Every St. Paddy's Day, the 69th led the parade down 5th Avenue (still does!). After that, the men would return to the armory & celebrate the rest of the day in fine Irish style. Dad started upstairs in the Co. E quarters, with the enlisted men. Then he moved down to the NCO club & celebrated there. Then late afternoon he moved across to the Officers' Club. The best part of being in the OC was the playing of the massed bagpipes there reverberating withing the walls: "Wearing of the Green," "Gary Owen," "The Minstrel Boy" etc., the regimental mascots, 2 huge(!) Irish Wolfhounds standing nearby. The room was wood paneled & walls carved with the names of the regiment's battles and campaigns since before the Civil War (some early units fought in the revolution, & geez, all the battle flags draped with masses of victorious battle ribbons. Then they performed the annual ritual. They cleared the table away from the big fireplace, & they drank a toast of Irish whiskey to the fallen who never came back. Then they dashed their glasses into the fireplace. Awesome. Then after 5:00 pm, we might go downstairs to the Veterans Corps for a subscription dinner. During the day, while the adults were drinking & celebrating, all the kids would play "war" in the armory, crawling all over the jeeps and trucks. My favorite was the recoilless rifle mounted on a jeep, We could open & close the breach, & look down the bore. What fun. We stuffed ourselves on hotdogs, hamburgers, & soda. Afterward (or maybe in lieu of dinner), a remnant would walk over to Duke Curran's bar. Col. Clarence "Duke" Curran was the commander of the regiment in the 1950's, & he owned an Irish bar across from the armory. No, it wasn't a "pub", it was a bar! I remember as a little kid being put on top of a table there & taught how to dance an Irish jig. I remember dad's 2 friends, Sgt. O'Hara & Lieut. Roarke(?). They had migrated from Ireland after the Rebellion; both were former IRA. Irony was their ranks were reversed there. O'Hara was the lieutenant & Roarke(?) was the sergeant! The 69th was so ingrained in us, we grew up with the regimental motto in our heads, "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked!" We were taught to live it, too, growing up in a tough part of Brooklyn. My uncle was also in the regiment, then my brother joined, too. You see, as heroic as they were & are, they are still citizen-soldiers. What fantastic memories, & what a role model for a boy.

Come all you gallant heroes, Along with me combined And I'll sing you a song, it won't take long, Of the Fighting Sixty Ninth They're a band of men brave, stout and bold, From Ireland they came And they had a leader to the fold, And Cocoran was his name It was on the 12th of April, When the lads they went away And they made a sight so glorious, As they marched along Broadway They marched along down Broadway, me boys, And straight unto the the shore And from there they went to Washington, And straight unto the war Chorus: So we gave them a hearty cheer, me boys, It was greeted with a smile Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise, We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth Farewell unto you dear New York, Will I e'er see you once more How it fills my heart with sorrow, To leave your sylvan shore Ah, but the country is calling us, And we must hasten forth So here's to the stars and stripes, me boys, And to Ireland's lovely shore Chorus: So we gave them a hearty cheer, me boys, It was greeted with a smile Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise, We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth And here's to Murphy and Devine, Our leaders of renown Who did escort our heroes, Unto the battle ground And said unto our colonel, We must fight hand to hand Until we plant the stars and stripes, Way down in Dixieland Chorus(2x): So we gave them a hearty cheer, me boys, It was greeted with a smile Singing here's to the boys who feared no noise, We're the Fighting Sixty Ninth
