Steam on the Road
Великобритания
Добавлен 7 фев 2022
The adventures of a guy that's bought a 6" Garrett 4CD traction engine "Tilly" and had fallen in love with the Steam scene. This is his journey in to Steam on the Road.
66 - 2024 in Steam Part 1
I thought it would be fun to put together a review of the Steam on the Road year, and to make sure it's not too long I'm going to split it in to parts, of which this is the first.
I'm looking at rallies now for 2025, and am open to any suggestions you may have, so just let me know.

On a visit to Lincoln I thought I'd have a walk around the original factory sites for the four big traction engine manufacturers in Lincoln - Clayton and Shuttleworth - Foster - Ruston - Robey It's a thoroughly poorly researched video, so please pull it apart in the comments. It's a video pulled together at short notice, poorly researched, and badly filmed. Enjoy.

How did this turn out?
Great Video 📸
Thank you 🙌 Glad you liked it.
How are you feeling after the cotswold steam rally, you were a bit poorly.
It all went pretty badly. I had sepsis and ended up in the bone infection unit in Oxford. More surgery and long recovery!
@SteamOTR glad you are on the mend, looking forward to next season!
Great to see your footage for the year, hope to see you next year I will have my 4" burrell SCC out for the first time having spent the past eleven years building her from castings and drawings from Andrew at Live Steam Models.
Oh that sounds amazing. Fantastic to get it out to enjoy all that work! Let me know if your at one of the rallies I'm at and we'll do a video about it 👍
@@SteamOTR Thank you for the reply, will look out for you
Thank you for sharing that Dan, excellent video. Is that it for the season or are you doing any road runs? Myself and Rob will see you in the New Year with our new Burrell Road Locomotive. Cannot wait!
Ah, great stuff - 4 inch Burrell?
Yes 4 inch Double Crank. We need to rethink transport arrangements so we can transport a trailer.
Since you're looking for suggestions, maybe you could take a look at an American engine if you happen to come across a full size or mini at a rally. I know they are uncommon there, but I've seen them in videos before from the UK, though I've yet to see anyone from across the pond give their take on one. Even though I live in Texas, I own a 4" Burrell, so it would be interesting to see a short video that highlights the differences in operation.
I have a friend with a Westinghouse American engine. I'll look into making a video of it.
I'm doing a video on picking up a project 4 1/2 inch burrell soon
Look forward to seeing that 👍
It’s good you back Dan where have you been?
Had a bit of bad luck, but back now 👍
just found you so looking forward to seeing all your steam adventures
Hi, and welcome 👍 Not much steam happening at the moment, but there will certainly be more and will get alot busier next spring!
Brilliant video. It would be fantastic if at some stage in the future if you were to do follow up videos on the present former sites of other steam engine manufacturers around England. It would be epic to see these as well
Yeah, I'm thinking of doing just that. Something to do in the winter!
Unfortunately life and progress moves on, Councils can barely afford to keep the bare essential services going let alone trying to preserve buildings that really have long since stopped being used fior what they were orginally built for. There is still a large amount of preserved stuff I feel around the country, at the end of the day you cant save everything or the whole of the country would end up being just one massive museum LOL
Councils have power over planning which is what's most important. It's not about saving everything, but more about saving something!
@@SteamOTR I get that, but then you just end up with a load of tat that slowly ends up becoming more and more decayed because some council bods made some pile of tat a "listed building" that no one wants to touch. We had something similar locally, where a property was listed and it just ended up turning to rubble rather than being reovated or restored because of all the caveats on it, eventually it was pulled down after 25yrs of it being empty, so much for it being listed LOL . Pop up to Iron Bridge ( UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Blists Hill theres lots of fantastic preservation up there 🙂 Kew Bridge pumping station, down here we have Twyford Waterworks, The brickworks, Amberley, Hollycombe, Milesstones at Bassingstoke, to name just a few. There is quite a bit already in my mind, just may be not a massive amount in Lincoln.
Great bit of history you are documenting there mate. Sir Isaac Newton once said “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants” this seems to be a sentiment that is lost on modern governance. Thanks for the mention too 👍🏻 Nick R
Cheers Nick. Great to see the engine progressing.
A very interesting video! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching 👍
That large Firth road open site was only demolished a few years back. It was a giant factory building branded with large white RUSTON name on the tritton road end of the building. It’s such a shame that it wasn’t saved
Heartbreaking!
Would have loved to have seen it.
Damn! I wish I’d known you were here!
Just back from a few in at the Cardinals Hat. Son's choice.
Not ramblings Dan, that was very interesting! Not seen any of those traction engine manufacturers building before. It is a great pity that some of these building can’t be repurposed in some was to remind people what went on in there area years ago. Unfortunately I could tell the same story’s hear in cornwall. Like holman’s brothers of Camborne, once employed over three and half thousand people building mining equipment shipped all over the world. Little to see now in camborne of the three sites they occupied. Hope you do more of this type of video 👍
Thanks Dave. It's a story repeated everywhere.
@@SteamOTR I recently visited the home of the Shuttle Worth family Old Walden I understand they had connections with the royal family. there was a far number of their traction engines at the steam rally
Lincoln crank were in operation in steam days, probably suppliers to Traction engine manufacturers. I'm sure I've read references to them in books. Lincoln has numerous Victorian buildings that are standing derelict and decaying. I visited there a few months back. There's some murals/posters painted on the wall at the back of the railway station covering the manufacturing history. The museum of Lincolnshire life has a good collection of steam engines and products of Lincoln. This museum is on the top of Lincoln away from the centre. Thanks for taking us on this mini tour of places, whose history we are all proud of.
Very welcome, and thanks for the information 👍
@@SteamOTR As a follow up, Clarkes crank & forge were the company making cranks in the steam age. They were taken over and eventually closed in 2002. The current Lincoln crank company has made a new crank for the current G5 new steam locomotive build, I referenced this from the G5 locomotive website. The Lincoln crank company operating today looks to be a very impressive operation and warrants a closer look.
Great. I'll have a look 👍
Sadly the steam enthusiast is a very small minority and the majority of the people in Lincoln now won't have a clue about any of the companies, likewise the council, unfortunately the majority of buildings are no longer fit for purpose and it's cheaper to demolish and start again, especially with the potential for asbestos in the existing buildings. It's not just Lincoln, Carlisle, my home city was home to Cowans Sheldon (crane makers to the world) and with the exception of a pub opposite what was their works there is no references to them at all.
It's so destructive not to celebrate our heritage
@@SteamOTR totally agree, but sadly for the majority it's irrelevant, they have no interest in the past and would question why it was being "celebrated"
First, surely! :-)
Hehe. Hardly 😂
Turn the jug the other way, so the opening I at the top when it is laid down. This let's air in as it pours and prevents the glugging and spilling.
Yeah, I thought of loads of better ways of doing it after i'd done it!!
Pour it with the spout high, not low.
Yeah, I thought of loads of better ways of doing it after i'd done it!!
You should flip the jug around so the hole is at the top when pouring. Let's the jug breathe, and you won't spill a drop.
Yeah, I thought of loads of better ways of doing it after i'd done it!!
Why not just syphon it with a tube?
Yeah, I thought of loads of better ways of doing it after i'd done it!!
Put a bendy straw in the blue container to stop it plugging. Long part in and the short part out pointing up. Unless you want to airate it.
Yeah, I thought of loads of better ways of doing it after i'd done it!!
Well that made me hold my breath. Never thought apple juice would be so intense
😁 The price of not thinking it through in advance.
Fucking Isaac Newtons fan club out here all at once. Didnt realise there were so many experts on pouring liquid 🤦♂️
Hehe. Yeah, can't beat Internet experts 😁
next time pour with the spout on the top. trust me you will thank me later. you wont fight air needing into the jug. it will pour smooth.
Yeah, probably would have done it differently if I'd have thought about it.
@@SteamOTR I learned it from an old machinist. Seems weird but it works.
Dumping several cups outside the container... wasteful, but a interesting way to guarantee the liquid fits.
Bro that isn’t several cups, that’s like maybe 1 and a half lol
Hehe. It looks dramatic, but in truth very little was actually lost.
@@SteamOTR yeah lol
There is a lot of ways to transfer/pour that liquid and not waste a drop. Just saying.
Yeah. True. Ah well.
Bukake fest at the start
🤣
I know you've had plenty of pouring tips by now, but I expect if you're brewing etc. you've access to a sterile tube/hose? In that case, you should definitely use it to siphon out your liquids; it'd be easier, safer, and quicker than pouring! Just pop most of the tube into your juice container, keeping only one end outside the container; then pinch/clip the tube near the open end you're holding (so that it fully plugs the tube), and pull some of the tube back out (it will be filled with juice but won't pour back into the container while you've your end sealed). You can then release the pinch/clip when the opening is over your pot (keep the pot at a lower level than the container, like in the video) and then the liquid will drain out to the level of the end of your tube in the juice (you can tie a sterile weight to the end, too, which should get you close to fully emptying it in one go). Once most of the liquid has been siphoned put you can more easily pour the rest into your pot :)
I have to confress that there are lots of more intelligent ways to have done this, but hey, I didn't really think about it, and only a relatively small amount spilled. I haven't done any brewing for years, but the fermenter was gathering dust in the cupboard so I thought I'd sterilise it and get it in to use.
@@SteamOTR and sure look, commenters love to tell people what they think was done "wrong", anyway! In any case, do please stay safe!
Gotta commit to the pour! Learned this as a very young kid, so id stop spilling milk 😂
Yeah, didn't do it so well, didn't really think about it in advance 😂
Try to Turn the jug on the wide side and it won’t glug glug smother pour. This method works when filling my cars washer fluid and oil, so I’m certain it will work for this too.? It’s worth a try.
Will definitely try that next time
No Dont turn it to the side, turn it all they way over so the hole is on the top, much easier! I Pour cemicals all the long with those jugs, much easier to have the hole highest up, not down or at the side! Try that
Nice, may I ask what microphone (if any) you’re using for your voiceover in this video?
It's a Rode NT-USB+ mic hooked up to the laptop.
Looks gorgeous. Those bottles are easier to pour when turned 180 degrees weirdly enough.
Definitely going to try this next time
Just a guess, but the top of the jug might have something built-in to make the airflow better when you turn at 90°. You know those plastic jugs of white vinegar, motor oil, etc.? It’s the same thing with those. The handle is hollow and just part of the same plastic that makes up the jug. When you turn at 90° and tip it as if you’re laying it flat, it flows smoothly
Try to pour it wide side towards the table ;)
What, and spoil all the fun 😂
@@SteamOTRnaaah not the wide side, have the hole all the way up, much better, soo just have the hole higher up, just do a 180 on that jug, makes it easier to hold to, if its on the side, its harder to aim and not as stable, just have it up!
wow and peace be upon you sir from me
Thanks 👍
You may need a test driver 😉
For sure.......
I had the privilege of steering this beautiful engine at a show at Powderham Castle in Devon this year. ❤
That's very cool. Always a privilege to get on the controls of one of these beautiful engines.

Yeah, the more movement the better!

Brilliant day out with a useful outcome 😉 Just lacking some sort of steam powered press, and a glass or two of cider 😋
I've got 25 litres in a fermenter now 😁
Are you planning on trying another New Year’s Day steam?
I doubt it at the moment. I'll need to be a bit fitter first. Still struggling after recent surgery, but never say never.
What a great idea for a gathering! Good time had by all by looks of it. And good to see you looking better too Dan!
It was a cracking day. Spent too long on my feet though, and can hardly move today 🤣
