Hi, can I ask a doubt a have. I recently bought a viking tremar and when it is in the middle position (both pickups), should I be able to control the volume independently?, whatever volume knob I turn, it affects boths pickups (as an identical global function). Is it like this? Thanks a lot!!!
To be honest I don’t know. I would expect the volume controls to work for each pickup independently in the middle position, but I honestly can’t remember from when I did the review. If in doubt I would suggest contacting your retailer or Hagstrom directly for confirmation. If it is meant to be like that and you want them independent (like, say, a Les Paul) then it’s a very easy modification to make without parts - it’s just wiring it differently.
the backingtrack please
I write all of the tracks for every demo I do, so there isn’t a backing track per se. The whole track is only as long as the demo!
@@AndyBurlaceMusic make it please is so good
I have the myrtlewood 12 string which swiftly became my favorite. And you’re correct. The fit and finish absolutely smoke the Mexican made Taylor and Martin I have. No comparison. I also have an lbanez 12 string that was tops until…
They really are something special. A bit of an unsung hero over here in the UK, which, in my opinion, is a crying shame!
Hello, where can I listen to your music?
As a guitarist and songwriter I don’t actually have any music available publicly yet, but as a drummer I played on the Walkway album WW3 on Spotify (and also some bass on that record too!) I’m planning to get some guitar music recorded and released at some point in the future, but as always it’s finding the time!
What pickup is that?
They’re a set of Suhr Aldrich’s and they’re absolutely superb in this guitar
Unless an instrument is really broken and badly repaired, if it is a solid instrument to begin with (no twisted necks, dead spots etc), with a few bits and bobs and some actual skills in setting up a guitar, any used guitar can play greatly.
Agreed. Some are a little more complex to work on than others, but unless it’s something massively structural then something can usually be done.
Thanks for the review! Sealed the deal on ordering a red one in mint condition for a great price!
Hope you enjoy it!
THANK YOU so very much Dear Sir for the much appreciated Warnings. What a wreck, it's like: "It's just a flesh wound!" for every time you said "It's not a Problem..." Don't let them get away with this Q.C. disaster! Great job at an Honorable Review. Sorry dear mate for all your suffering with this Lemon of a "guitar". Are you WATCHING THIS Harley Benton?!
I think ‘disaster’ is a bit of an overstatement - it’s now basically a year later, and it’s still one of the most played guitars in my collection. There were some issues, but nothing that affects the playability of the guitar in a permanent sense - and for the cost I still think it’s a huge amount of guitar. I stand by the review completely, but I would also buy another should the need arise!
Any info you can share on this guitar tone? been trying to get something like this for a while with a Mesa MkV25 or Helix. Demo sounds great
The patch was using the Helix Friedman BE100 patch, with a precision drive in front of it. There was no EQ outside of the amp and pedal from memory. The guitar itself I’d describe as very ‘tight’. The pickups feel surprisingly low output for a guitar like this, so I round myself pushing gains a little further than I would have expected. That said, it’s a fantastically articulate guitar, and everything sounds super clear and pronounced!
Thanks for these clear explanations. What amp did you use for that demo?
This, and every other demo I do, all use the Line 6 Helix. I tend to have a relatively standard set of patches I’ve made, that I’ll slightly tweak for each guitar
❤❤❤ thanks for your great review! I purchased this today, then ran across your podcast. 😊 I hope I get a pretty one.
Congratulations! It genuinely was one of the nicest guitars I got my hands on last year. I’m sure you’ll be very happy!
Great review. I bought a Super Swede as my first solid body electric about twenty years ago. For some stupid reason I sold it… I found the same model in mint condition last year and love it. It’s my go to guitar. Last week, I saw this model in blue for a great price new…. It arrived today. The finish is impeccable and the f holes have double binding. You’re right about the fretwork. I’ll tweak the neck and all some ultra light strings for my sixty-year-old fingers. I told the missus that this would be the last guitar that I would ever buy; it was April Fool’s Day so….
Fantastic! Glad you’ve found something you’re happy with! Thanks for the kind words too
why is our head so tilted back ?
Do you mean the guitar or my actual head? If you mean me, it’s a small room, so I have to sit a little awkwardly to get myself and the guitar in shot.
Thanks for the video, very informative and well structured! Did you check the Maple yourself? Whether it is only a veneer on top of the Nyatoh or if there is actually a sizeable maple top and then the veneer on top of that? I can't really tell from the Thomann product page. Also, is there a dedicated set-up manual for that Floyd Rose 1000?
It’s a proper maple cap with a paper-thin veneer laid on that. There isn’t a setup manual for the Floyd provided, but it’s functionally the same as every other Floyd, and sets up/adjust as such. There’s a plethora of videos on Floyd setups on RUclips 🙂
Love the tone during the intro song. Makes me want to buy one of these 😬😅
Thanks very much!
Excellent review - great to have someone not simply flog the thing, who also knows what they're talking about. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
He's technically speaking English but you will need the subtitles to understand a word he's saying😂🤣😂
I don’t know what to tell you… that’s what English people sound like?
You sound amazing
So happy to subscribe Andy; I own two Hagstroms; they are impeccable. Thanks for the knowledge❤😊
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the kind words!
cheapest 1200 bucks?
Not here in the UK - they’re currently around £2500 ($3200) used as a starting point and go up from there. $1200 (just under £950) is used Sterling Majesty X money over here!
Can the action be lowered through adjustments easily?
There’s nothing different to adjusting a regular acoustic - there’s a bit of room for lowering at both the nut and the bridge, but as usual I would recommend a luthier for all adjustments on an acoustic unless you know what you’re doing, as lowering an acoustic action tends to be a one-way trip unless you’re replacing bits!
Thank you and thank you for a good review. @@AndyBurlaceMusic
Nice review! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Appreciate the honesty, I don't mind quirks that can be adjusted/changed due to lack of quality control but that misaligned bridge really makes me hesitant to buy.
Upon further use over the last few months I actually suspect it’s the rout that’s slightly misaligned rather than the bridge, and it is only by a very small amount. I will also say that Thomann have a very comprehensive returns policy, and have even seen people returning them successfully because they don’t like the look of the veneer pattern on the top, so if it’s not up to code they will take it back. If I had more time before the first need for this guitar I may have sent it back and had another go, but even with the few issues this had, it’s still become one of my 2 go-to guitars more often than not - and that’s a huge accolade for a guitar this price, when the majority of the rest of my collection all tip in at well over £2000+
@@AndyBurlaceMusic True, there is a lot of bang for the buck and it's important to take everything into consideration. I have been thinking about it for a while yesterday and decided it's still worth the price and bought it, worst case scenario like you said I will just return it, if it's doable it's def a keeper. Not bothered about anything other than basic function that will last.
Honestly I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with it, I’m 6 months+ into ownership and still find myself reaching for it more often than not!
@@AndyBurlaceMusic I got it today, it took me about two hours to set up. Bridge was almost perfectly aligned, had to raise the bridge and play with the tension strings, intonation was excellent thank God. Has a couple of microscopic dinks and the letter B missing on head stock. I got the only Harley enton in the world, haha. Love it, feels great. Pickups are a little quiet, gonna put in my Seymour Designed that I had spare and see how they sound. No cracks or anything like that. Very happy bunny, paid 240 quid. Unreal really
Glad you’re happy. If it’s anything like mine you should be content for years to come!
Breath ffs
🤣🤣! Lots of information to squeeze into 10 minutes or the algorithms get all messed up!
Bought a fusion 3 with wilkinson for 359.00 a few months back. VERY surprised on the playability and sound for the price.
For the money, they’re so impressive!
I'm happy to finally see a review where they don't just drop a sh*t ton of gain on top of the guitar and then tell people how great they sound. Thanks for letting us here the natural tones the guitar can make.
Thanks! I love high-gain tones as much as the next person, but I feel it’s important to hear the dynamic range of a guitar to make an informed choice - we all play different stuff, so covering as many tones as possible hopefully helps lots of players
If they would make one with a thin and flat neck I would buy it right away.
The neck is bigger than I would expect of a guitar like this, but it’s certainly not unwieldy. It’s very similar to a Fender 60’s profile ‘c’ neck I would say, which I appreciate is not for everyone. That said, I have quite small hands comparatively, and within my ability I don’t find it too big to play quickly on. It’s a straight 12” radius too, so it’s not the flattest board out there, although I believe they’re releasing models next year (notably the ST-182, which I’ll be all over!) with compound 12-16” radius necks, and I would expect that to come across to the next gen of fusions too.
i'm considering the sterling version of this model cause i've been borrowing a 7 string for a while, and i'm in love with the sterling but the only thing stopping me from buying one is the floating tremm ngl, for me being stuck in one tuning until you mess with the springs and having to change out string guages completely negates the point of having a lower range guitar to cover multiple tower tunings and its really annoying me cause I REALLY want a Sterling Majesty
I largely agree. I have no real use for a floating trem on a 7 string, and would rather the option to retune at will. Look at a device called a ‘Tremol-no’ to fix your issue. It lives in the trem spring cavity and gives you to option to lock the trem off completely, effectively turning the guitar into a hardtail. It means you can get the guitar you want without having the issues you describe. Hope it helps!
I've been considering the purchase of the Hagstrom Viking Tremar, I have seen many reviews of which indicate an impressive look and feel, but was bothered by said flaws as in loose toggle switch's, poor finish around neck to body join, some buzzing in frets and that the headstock wasn't inlaid but a decal with a clear coat and in some instances poorly finished like hazing, these reviews have both enlightened and detracted my thoughts on this brand.
For what it’s worth the overall fit and finish was very good, and the neck-end of the review guitar defo felt like an anomaly rather than ‘the norm’ based on others I’ve seen since. I would recommend physically playing one if possible, and seeing for yourself, as it’s so hard to convey through a video. Even if you order one and aren’t happy, most places have a 28 day return policy or similar, to exchange it if you’re unhappy, but they’re definitely nice enough to warrant the order. Hope this helps!
Thanks, I might try before I commit to ordering, I was also wondering if you have done a review on the Vox Bobcat V90, thanks again.
I haven’t reviewed that one, as I don’t have a contact at Vox’s UK distributor currently. It may well come along in the future though! I haven’t even seen one in real life before, as they don’t seem to be all that common in the wild, so I couldn’t comment on it I’m afraid.
Super helpful review. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
sounds awesome man! Great Playing
Thank you kindly!
Great review. This is probably the best guitar for the money (or even higher priced) that I've yet seen. No onboard sound system sounds as good as a good condenser mic, as you have just shown. Well done.
I agree - it’s certainly one of the nicest acoustics I’ve ever played, and considering the price it’s a bit of a bargain! Most onboard systems are piezo systems, which just work on vibrations through a transducer in the bridge. As a result you don’t really get the characteristic of the guitar in that tone, and they’re quite generic. As a result it’s hard to show the natural sound in a recording, but the condenser mic does a reasonably good job of replicating it.
it seems like i had some good luck, i bought a b stock one the same as yours and it arrived last week and it was literally good to go, i gigged it that night, i did change the set up slightly but thats all it needed
This wasn’t a B-stock one! This was a full retail price model. From what I understand, the B-stock ones are returns from people who don’t want (or can’t) to do the work to make them playable, but this was sold to me as an A-grade guitar
please tell me how set it up?
that intro was beautiful
Thank you kindly! Was certainly a fun one to write 🙂
do you do guitar lessons? @@AndyBurlaceMusic
I do indeed! However I currently only offer them face-to-face in Suffolk, UK. I hope to be setup for online lessons soon
Its just a rebranded D'ANGELICO..has same tuners...pickups... A better option for the same $$$ Yamaha 113..or jsm10/20..for better blies tone..lower the pickups
Stranger things have happened, but I believe D’angelico are made in a a different country and factory based on what I can see online. Yamaha always produce a great instrument for sure, but a JSM is obviously missing the bigsby, and has a very different feel too. If I were in the market myself I would certainly play both and make a decision by then. I wouldn’t, however, say the Yamaha is a better guitar, especially without having them side by side to compare directly
Nice review, mate. Stellar playing too 👍
Thanks very much!
That headstock sure resembles a Vintage brand.
I can definitely see the similarity!
Hah, I think I've seen some of your posts about this guitar on one of the HB facebook groups. Great video, you're a monster player too!
Entirely possible - I have been reasonably active on a few HB pages about this guitar! Thanks very much for the kind words too!
NIce review. The fact you overgraded it bring a really good point because it was the purpose of this guitar which sounds excellent for his price (I recognize some Max Ostro... "fusion" phrasing in your improvisation. Couldn't be better choice!)
That was the exact idea of this guitar. Including the pickup swap it still comes on at around £200 less than a Charvel DK24 and has more spec too, so on paper it was worth a look. Anything that compares me to Max Ostro I’ll happily take! He’s an immense talent for sure!
Truly great demo song
Thanks very much!
Really looking forward to the Suhr shootout!
Aiming to film it and release it next week. Should be interesting to see how they compare!
I don’t understand most of what you said, but still found it interesting. Lovely review sir!
Haha! Thanks, chap! I should probably get around to doing some drum-related stuff for you guys at some point 🙂
Great job Andy, quality honest review 👍
Thanks very much! Appreciate it mate 🙂
Anytime your dealing with a floating trem and 7 strings, it's gonna be way more difficult to change tunings or string guages. I actually prefer the basic Sterling trem unit, like on a Cutlass. I keep it tightened to the body. But if needed, back each pivot screw off 1 full turn, and it's good to go. Simple and effective.
To be honest, a trem of any kind is basically superfluous on a 7 as far as I’m concerned - the times I could use it are far outweighed by the times I want rock solid tuning. I’m amazed they never offered this model with a hard tail to be honest!
WTF are u playing on this guitar man? You are misusing it with your rock
There’s already a huge amount of jazz and blues demos for this guitar on RUclips, so I went for a more Foo-Fighters style piece to show its versatility. There’s more traditional sound demos at the end of the video. I would push back a little saying it’s ‘misused’ too. Semi-acoustic guitars have been used for harder music by loads of people, from Dave Grohl, to Tim Armstrong, to Tom Delonge and beyond. If it sounds good and it feels good, then it doesn’t need to be pigeonholed to a genre! 🙂
When playing the fast run it helps to count in groups of six. Worked for me
Exactly this. It has a triplet feel as it runs up 🙂
Thanks a lot man this was really helpful
No problem 👍
Prayer position vibes. Great demo!
Good spot! I was aiming exactly that vibe, with that 6/8 ‘shuffle’ feel. Not enough metal shuffles!
Intro demo was absolutely filthy. Great playing !!
You’re very kind! Thanks for the comment!
I came for the guitar and stayed for the awesome playing. Very good video.
Thanks very much!
I own one of these and I wanted to compliment your very accurate review.
Thanks very much!
