Interestingly enough i was diagnosed with a radical protein/prion caused cancer when i was 17 and i was allowed to spend time in labs manned by some of the best oncological geneticists in europe; and it was frankly amazing ! I got to study my very own genes beside them, and witness some of the most experimental treatments in oncological in development.

I don’t think it’s the scariest outright, but just the fact that it’s relatively common compared to a lot of the other insanely lethal and horrific diseases is enough for it to take the top spot

Food science is so sketchy. There are so few things accounted for you would not accept those kinds of results in any other field its kind of laughable. One clear example would be the countless boogie fat=bad studies from the 70s to the 2000s. Personally, I would not base my diet on any of these studies, specially if they are so case-specific like the effects of kombucha.

Awesome video! Explains prions to even a beginner in microbiology. Pathogenic prions are certainly scary, its a miracle we even discovered them! Astounding work.

Wait, cooking doesn't kill prions?, this is bad dude, wait, if prions can make other proteines to fold the wrong way, couldn't another protein make prions fold the right way?, I guess it would be pretty hard to engineer something like that, but if the situation gets bad enough, that maybe a way to fix them.

Technically, rabies is not 100% lethal, even after sympthoms appear. We have a "stunning" 20-40 cases known, when it was survived, mostly from the last say 20 years. Unfortunatelly, Wikipedia says that ~59000 people die PER YEAR, so "some" luck is needed... Moreover, studies showed that there are some unvaccinated individuals with rabies antibodies, i.e. they were infected, but the immune system won without sympthoms. Still, rather don't play with animals having rabies, it's unhealthy... :)

Lethality in plague inc is a timer on how fast a plague will kill iirc. still, prions only infect prion proteins (i guess there is multiple systems atrophy but it ain't technically a prion)

It's mentioned in the beginning, but I wanna stress that N. Gonorrhea is absolutely terrible at existing otherwise. When we had bacteriology in university, about half of the class on genital track infections was just about how miserable it is to try and grow it, because just existing outside of a carefully pH and temperature and chemically controlled environment for seconds is enough to kill it. Cotton swabs usually kill it because of the lipids in cotton. It's fascinating how things can become nightmarishly unkillable in some ways but vulnerable in others

Perhaps the lack of cytotoxic machinery in Archaea (which evolved to give bacteria a fighting chance against other bacteria) is exactly why no virus has evolved to give archaea pathogenic abilities. Archaea simply aren’t geared towards producing toxic chemicals necessary to promote infection.

Sorry I might have missed it (sick as a dog and watching in the middle of the night) but how do the prion diseases cross the animal/human barrier? Based on your video I can understand how the disease can occur endogenously but how do the prion proteins move from the gut to the bloodstream and into the brain? Anyways Thanks for the video!

what I don't get is why it's all cerebral proteins and not more of a mix of kinds of proteins which are susceptible to misfolding say, why is none of the ligament building proteins a prion protein?
