I have had a similar problem on a 7.3 liter intermittently not building oil pressure and running the Hpop reservoir empty. The main oil pump that is down on the front cover behind the harmonic balancer has a pressure relief valve . The valve get worn and cocks and binds in the housing causing it to dump all the oil pressure back into the oil pan. There is a plug aimed down to the passenger side on the oil pump . I believe it has an Allen slot bolt ,unscrew it and pull out the piston and spring . Inspect the piston for scoring on the side . I was able to order the piston from the dealer and replace just the piston . Good luck!
