Industrial Narrow Gauge around Europe
Huta Gliwice 2002
Huta Gliwice (Huta 1 Maja) in Silesia was visited on the 13/03/2002.
It was served by both a standard gauge and narrow gauge (785mm gauge) rail system. The narrow gauge system had at one time been linked to the rest of the Silesian narrow gauge network, but for a number of years had been disconnected and in use as an internal system.
The overall traffic levels across the site were at a very low level, with hardly any train movements noted when visited. There were 3 Lyd2 locos and one Wls150.
Steel billets were unloaded from the standard gauge into narrow gauge wagons and then dumped outside the forge. The billets were then loaded into the furnaces and heated up to be forged into standard gau...

Lindow Moss 1992

Lindow Moss, Wilmslow, Manchester. The company was originally called Middlebrook Mushrooms then finally Wilmslow Peat Farm. In June 1992, it was one of the first true industrial narrow gauge railways that I had filmed. Sadly the Hi8 video equipment in those days for the enthusiastic amateur was woefully inadequate. The 2ft gauge railway trundled on for another 8 years after this before finally ...
Springfield Agricultural Railway - Diema DS12
With the cold weather and frosts in 2021 right into late spring, because of the water cooled engine, the Diema was not prepared for use until the end of May. Once the loco was given a clean-up and the radiator was filled, it was taken for it's first test run halfway along the line. It's always pleasing to hear the sound of the original single cylinder engine in the loco.

The 600mm gauge peat works railway located just outside the small village of Essern, Germany, closed in approx 2001. Since then a preserved operation has operated on most of the route. This video was taken in June 1996 when it was still in industrial operation. It was a delightful roadside railway in a rural location.

The first of two Dinorwic videos. A trip around the disused workings at Dinorwic Quarries. Not great quality, but it was 1991! The weather was, as you would expect for Llanberis in December, pretty bad, so apologies for the wind noise.

Video taken in 1997, within a year of closure of the line. This route was the last section of a network of narrow gauge railways in the area which covered 3 different narrow gauges. The LKM V10C locos used to pull trains of up to 50 skips. At this time there were 3 V10C locos in working order and one NS3 used for shunting at the sand pits. Further footage of this railway and other ex-DDR indust...

The firm of Ardoisieres D'Angers had a number of slate mines around Angers. By August 1995 when this video was taken, this railway was the last in operation. It closed shortly after these scenes were taken and a northern road bypass around Trélazé cut the trackbed of the railway in two. Further scenes from this railway and many other industrial narrow gauge railways can be seen on the DVD; 20 Y...

St Nicklaas Brickworks Belgium. Industrial narrow gauge railway
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
As I explained in the comments the railway and ironworks has long gone. The system was reported out of use by 2033, and the locos had already been sold.
Awesome footage. Thank you
Beautiful work, just beautiful.
Great video, thanks very much!
What is the track gauge 2'
hi David, yes, the track is 2ft gauge.
Why was haywood filled in and all the above ground workings demolished ?
Crz_xy, from a report in 2018, it looks like the workings had to be closed down due to water problems. Steve
@@thomskutube ah alright, thanks.
Yes, it has all gone. The brickworks is still there, but road vehicles now transporting the clay. @@thomskutube Thanks a lot !
Fantastic video, we are currently re-building 2 of the wagons for an event this weekend
Wow I have 0 gauge 3 / half and 5 gauge but no lister 2 ft Gauge . how long is the track .......
The track is around 0.5km long. Steve
Verry great. Best regards from germany. Jens
Ce réseau est-il toujours actif ? Meilleurs Vœux pour 2024 🎉🤗
Philip, the railway closed down shortly after this film was taken in the mid 1990s. Steve
@@thomskutube OK, thank you 🥴
Ce "réseau" est-il encore actif ? Bonne et heureuse année 2024☃️
Hi Philip, happy new year. Sadly the railway closed down a long time ago about 2002. Steve
@@thomskutube Thank you, happy 2024😉
it looks a bit different there now
Wonderful!
One of the best field railway videos I've seen! 👍
truly a classic
Orenstein & Koppel or Decauville equipment seems to be the heritage of the equipment.
Wouldn’t a tractor and trailer be easier?🥴
We actually now have a couple of hetitage tractors, but if we used them through the wet winter months for moving the muck back and forwards on a trailer, then it would make a real mess of the fields. This way there is no impact at all.
It seems to run very smooth! I’ve operated its little brother at a museum as a kid, I think it was a DL6. It had a gear lever instead of a wheel and going from 2nd to 3rd gear was pretty tough. You really had to listen to the engine and the gearbox to get it right… But this thing seems to operate much smoother, it looks great and it sounds awesome!
Hello! Could you tell me, how this train works? I mean, the big wheel controls the gearbox, and it have [N, 1, 2, 3] speeds. But what is the control you switch at 0:59? There is a label on the gearbox is " Z<->V ". What you switch at 3:40? I would like to know these, because I working on a PC game and I would like to create a train similar to Diema DS 12. I hope you could answer my questions and thank you! Have a nice day!
Gbrlk - the lever thrown at 0:59 is the direction lever, either forward or back (Vorwart oder Zuruck). The weighted lever on the back of the cab puts on the brakes. Hope that helps. Steve
@@thomskutube Thank you! It helps!
0:34 I'm sure this locomotive is battery electric
Good view and nice transportation of goods 👍
Amazing document
Quite spiffing.
Like
I know the wagons were empty but hauling so many. That's one hell of aa powerful loco
There are no empty wagons around 4:43.
Amazing.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was the former GDR, but Vechta is located in the West Germany!
Most interesting. Thanks very much.
I’m a mine explorer
Amazing !!!!!!
Thank you for this. It is certainly different than the way Exxon does things in the oilfields of North Dakota!
What exactly did they used to mine here? Crystals? The little battery locomotive is cute.
They would evaporate water from a slurry to make crystals in big steel pans, then the chunks would be processed. The trucks would be tipped in to an elevator that would take the crystals to the top of the grading plant.
A Plymouth! That’s one of our boys!
No comments? Well, I thank you sir, for recording this bit of history for me to enjoy! I would hope a club or some other organization continues to use the railway and equipment for preservation and entertainment. I hope they didn’t just rip up the rails for a bit of scrap money, like they do here in the States.
Amazing footage, good too see the cutting room before the equipment fell down. Looks so peaceful in the footage
I used to be the electrician from bicarb plant that would repair the equipment in this area, it brings back happy memories to see the old place, sadly long gone.
Why can't the country class this as an historic place and bring it back to life..just look at what income and jobs for local businesses this would provide..to much money being spent in the big city and nothing about history
That's what frightens the elites the most, our history, who we are and what we've done. They want us depressed on welfare of low paying jobs. Pride of nation is now racist, Not patriotic. That's what they teach and when we're gone so will our history.
We were there last week. Australia level was so fascinating!
:)
Tja. Gruss Gerd. 👍
Neat little railway. I would be interested in a modeler's photo essay/walkaround of the W&R battery loco, showing all the various details. Plus some photos with a known size reference for scaling purposes. Just a thought...

this is an exceptional achievement. we have a farm and i have often thought about trying to build a narrow gauge railway. however, we also have a quad bike. would you say a narrow gauge railway such as yours possesses any advantages over a quad bike? thank you.
There are issues with both . A quad bike will pull a smaller load and is more flexible in the short term however in the winter and over wet ground the railway will be less damaging and less likely to get bogged in mud as long as the rails are kept clean and the ballast is good . The railway excels at heavy loads and an elevated section near the heap would allow tippling of the wagons . An interesting area to look at is the monorail which was developed a few years ago for site and agricultural use . Though I haven't seen one in a while
These points are quite typical on these lightly laid peat tracks as they are moved so often . The sanding happens because the ovens cannot keep the sand dry enough to stop blocking the sanders so its as easy to use a bucket . At least then you get sand . These trains are often suprisingly heavy
So cute train
