An "ark" is a trunk or box to contain something. The dimensions of Noah's ark are basically just a big rectangle with no rudder, no bow or stern, no way to steer, no sails and one window. It says nothing about holds or cabins - such things had not even been invented yet for boats. It was literally just a box. The theological point is to trust God). and that all the diversity of life on Earth evolved in only 5000 years. The Bible thinks that if you put colored sticks in front of a cow, then that cow will have striped babies. I could keep going on and on and that's only in the very first book. The Bible thinks that people can be lifted into the sky on clouds because the Bible doesn't know what clouds are. The Bible thinks that stars are angels. The Bible thinks the sun goes around the earth. The Bible thinks that diseases are caused by evil spirits. These are not things that can be refuted by the word "miracle," they are fundamental scientific misunderstandings about the universe.

If you actually read the passage, it's just saying the sheep liked to breed near sticks, not that the sticks affected the genes of the sheep. Rather, Jacob intentionally bred certain varieties of sheep together by placing the stick near those specific goats. 35 So he removed on that day the striped and spotted male goats and all the speckled and spotted female goats, every one with white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the care of his sons. ELCA pastor here, and yes, the Bible is not scientifically accurate. Yes, we know that. It is not intended to be a scientific book. It should not be read as a scientific book. The person you are arguing with seems to have a world view that the Bible is a science book. And well, you are correct in pointing out all the things that demonstrate that his world view is wrong. He is correct that this is a story about one person, though again his conclusions about his world view are wrong. But rightly understood as a story that explains why Jacob moved away from Laban, how Jacob got his good livestock, this story works within itself as a story that explains from a pure faith perspective some history that is relevant to the people of ancient Israel -- but the story contains no more accurate science than a Harry Potter novel. I am not sure how you really get someone whose worldview is that the Bible is the scientific accurate source of knowledge to move away from that worldview. I have not held that worldview since I was probably a child attending sunday school, then I grew up. And my faith does not depend on the Bible being scientifically accurate.

I'm not even religious and not exactly a scientific scholar but I can name several things that the bible says that are scientifically impossible. Even one of the biggest stories Noah's Ark is impossible.
