Sleeping in a Fire Tower: Mount Kearsarge North
A beautiful hike up Mount Kearsarge North with an overnight in the fire tower. We took the Weeks Brook trail for the 5 mile in and 5 mile out trail covered in moss and following a stream to the top. My father Gary and Allen came along for the trip and we met some new people at the top.

    You can buy the graphite packing for the needle valve online for between 5-10 bucks. Just carve the old stuff out completely and tighten the nut until there is some reasonable resistance when you open the valve.

    You know I watch a lot of these stove build videos and I’m very impressed with the creativity and engineering of many of them now I’ve only seen five minutes of this video but I have to ask the question honestly, how many times are you gonna have to load that thing during the night to stay warm. I’m working on building a tent using an aluminum, turkey, roaster, lightweight, larger fuel capacity, and probably a little bit easier to work with then the steel you’d have to deal with with a ammo can plus I can find turkey roasters, aluminum ones at the thrift store honestly for less than five bucks even if you’re lucky it’s unlikely you’re gonna find an ammo can anywhere that cheap, not criticizing, just stating facts.

    • @ConnecticutBackcountry
      @ConnecticutBackcountry 28 дней назад

      @@davesullivan8073 oh hey, yeah, I’m down for those comments as they are spot on. The reality is that I wanted the project. And something that fit into a pulk. That is the only reason I built it that way. You can build it cheaper than I did in many ways. If I remember right, I was all in (minus the stove pipe) for like 30 bucks. That said, I did notice the temp drop and I reloaded the stove often through the night but I’m good with that. To each their own hey. There are dozens of better options and I would love to see yours when you are done. I have seen the roaster pan done on a couple forums and think it’s a winning design that did not fit what I wanted to build. All the best, Gary.

    My folks used to have an older larger 2 burner Coleman. I used that for 2 or 3 years to boil maple sap for maple syrup so it got used hard. Had to retire it though. I used to take it apart to clean the generator spring periodically but that last time you could see the super fine threads were getting really bad on the steel pipe where the brass end cap was. It was old to where I couldn’t find a replacement pipe and didn’t trust it. I didn’t want to have that end cap where the needle comes out blow off. Lucky me though. I spotted a smaller 2 burner version at my friends rummage sale. It looked brand new except the main burner showed black soot. They had $10 on it. I asked if that was right. She said yes so I grabbed it. Got it home and worked on it. What I found was wrong with it was there was a small burr on the cylinder wall of where the pump operates. This caused pressure issues. I buffed that off with some fine wet and dry paper. Think I replaced the rubber pump. May have put in or made a leather one like the old stove. Good as new. I think that stove had an issue from the start and was why it showed soot as it didn’t look like it had been burned at higher temp. They are not cheap now a days but were and excellent and durable purchase in the past. And we’re pretty much bomb proof.

    • @ConnecticutBackcountry
      @ConnecticutBackcountry 2 месяца назад

      For sure they are bomb proof! That older 2 burner is still serviceable if you wanted to put the parts into it! www.oldcolemanparts.com/ Shoot them off a list of what you are looking for and you might be surprised to find what they have available! I am probably more into them because of my history with them and it seems that you may be as well. That's cool in my opinion! Thanks for sharing your story! All the best, Gary.

I warmed the water in my Jetboil Stash. I alternate stoves and on a short hike like this I don't mind that weight, not that it is much more than my other cook systems.

    Once I realized the 3+ month wait I reached out to Graffeo and I got the original pipe within 24hrs. I learned from sources that these guys have stolen tons of designs from other manufacturers (second hand knowledge) so I requested a refund. I was promised this refund over a month ago and it's clear I'll never get it. Also ebay suspended their account for "suspicious activity". I lost over 1100 bucks and never got my money or the scrappy knockoff product. Got to Graffeo these guys a scam!
