A Quaker Friendly Guided Meditation

In this video, I take some of the ideas I had after reviewing the Hallow App last year to think about what a Quaker Worship app might look like. One of my ideas is focussed on guided meditation with a Quaker slant. NOTE: This is not a meeting for worship and is not intended to replace it, but as an additional helpful tool...perhaps...

'Rooted in Christianity': What does this mean for Quakers?
I've started attending my local meeting in August 2024, and after going to meetings for about 3 months I've learned how to let the silence penetrate my ears to the point where it becomes really loud. Sometimes there are these waves of goosebumps that come over me and on a few occasions I've had some involuntary muscle contractions, mostly in my shoulders. I still have discerning to do about whether I'm subconsciously doing this to myself because I expect to tremble and quake in the back of my mind or if this really is the spirit.
Direct revelation...I like it.
Sounds like Quakers have adopted Bluesky. It makes sense. And instagram, limited as it is, is very popular. It's what FB was. I've scaled down my use of Twitter a lot. But I do still use it cos it still has a critical mass for politics etc. but that will change, I have no doubt
I'm a big fan of Reddit and have used the Quakers subreddit for a number of questions as someone new to Quakerism
Quakerism without God doesn’t make sense. “God himself has come to lead his people” through the guiding inner light. Is God outside the world? Is God a supernatural being? Or does God exist within the confines the natural world? We can disagree on the answers while still being faithful Quakers. What is indisputable however is that THERE IS THAT OF GOD IN EVERY PERSON, perhaps even in every living thing, and so all of life is worthy of our awe, of our respect, of our praise, and of our quiet worship 🙏
Anything Meta is just as deeply compromised as Twitter. I'll look for you on Bluesky!
Given non-theist Quakers, as Quakers, respect the views of all other's interpretations, for Jenkins to make it into his own edgy anti-theist viewpoint, just seems kind of manipulative almost? Using his misunderstanding of someone else's faith (clearly without much research) just seems disingenous
Transitioned to Bsky a month ago myself. Deleted X. Great move!
Welcome to bluesky!
Could you make a video where you just go through the books on your bookshelf, and give brief reviews/ summaries of each?
Excellent discussion. We have a few atheists in my meeting, but Christ is preached and proclaimed openly without apology. There's room for us all, but I'm thankful that the atheists don't set the agenda
A difficult decision I’m still grappling with: taking a stand against the hate, the trolling & suppression of critical voices OR a refusal to cede this ground to the oligarchs & their online stormtroopers? Also, it’s a simple reality that many people in the global south are still using those channels and there are important organising & community spaces still there, hard won over many years. Seems churlish to abandon all that social infrastructure. Have moved onto Bluesky too and am keeping a watching brief on Twitter and Facebook for now.
I think it's the right decision. X is one of the most un-Quakerly places on the internet now. For now, I think Bluesky is a good alternative and it seems to be getting traction, but time will tell how it goes.
Hello just making contact, I’m Emma from Quakerology. Perhaps we could do a long interview for my channel? I don’t even know your name! Let me know what you think. Thanks, Emma
Hey there, Emma! That would be very cool. Let me know how best to get in touch and I’m sure we’d find a time! Ollie
While I must admit I was only on Twitter to support certain creators in the first place (I always found the UI painful), I left as soon as it became X. I simply did not want to contribute anything towards supporting Elon Musk.
?why separate one? you cannot tolerate the pressure of counter arguement?
With due respect, I would ask why anyone could tolerate lies. Misinformation is wide spread. Quakers have been the first to tolerate each person's opinions. But why tolerate gaslighting. I understand why this man got off x.
Why should it matter? Only people who feel the need to force their views on others would have an issue with it.
I'm not a Quaker and am not on TwitterX; however I think you are making an Ok decision. I am familiar with liberal quakers in USA. I have mostly forgotten social media. Blue sky will also have its problems down the road. The problem with twitter was never Elon in my opinion, and moderators always (no matter what site) skew towards good ideas with little practical application. They will skew towards whatever ideology sounds wonderful regardless of its actual application, and this can make moderators (in all places) support very strange things like Hamas. That is because moderators are chosen for politeness not for brains.
Cults generally don't leave things open to the individual interpretation and have 'be aware that you may be wrong' written into their literature, so I am personally always confident answering 'are you a cult' the 'sect' vs 'religion' is always more complex though
How wonderful to hear about the events and experiences your young guest went through as a young Quaker and how all the attendants' lives were shaped thereby. Thank you for posting!
True Prayer is contemplation as this Quaker senses it!
🌠Thank you🌃
You’re welcome!
Thanks for another interesting Video. Controversial take: I think other Quakers might be missing something by avoiding set Christian prayers entirely. I used to pray in silence, waiting on God, much like a personal Meeting for Worship. But during a particularly difficult time, I found I couldn’t pray that way. Somehow, I came across the Church of England’s Daily Prayer app, which plays recordings of liturgical prayer. At first, it felt like someone else was praying the prayer for me when I couldn’t - carrying me through - connecting me with God and others. Morning and Evening Prayer are often described as the Church’s collective prayer, and in that dark time, I deeply felt that. Since then, I’ve explored praying the Rosary and using prayer beads, blending in silent prayer. These forms of prayer have been both grounding and have strengthened my relationship with God. Although I stuggle with the more chatting-with-God style of prayer. I can see why some Quakers would feel set prayers are inauthentic, but that's not always the case and we shouldn't be afraid to experiment on our spiritual journey.
I have had a similar experience in which I found the prayers and readings in the Daily Office to be particularly helpful and powerful during a difficult point in my life. At that time I needed the structure and form to help me. I have also found silent, contemplative prayer to be powerful and meaningful. I agree that making use of the spiritual tools available to us is wise
Really appreciated this video. I'll take some of these ideas into my worship meeting also. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much! Glad it was useful
Thank you for this video. I'm not currently a Quaker or even religious but Quakerism is something I think fits my values and the fact that you are questioning it's role in society is much more than any other organised religious group does. Thanks again!
THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: MEAT EATING. Not simple, destroying the Earth, destroying our health, certainly not in line with the testimony of peace. !! What else?? Stewardship (here in America) - no, scratch that, meat eating at odds with that. Community? Nope, not in line with that - we should be in community with all the earth's life. TRUTH? Think about it.. Are you being truthful to yourself when you look inwards and answer to that which the Light proscribes for living?
15:11. Them I am "weird" because I have read about a dozen of them cover to cover. It is the ONLY way to get a complete and official statement of what that yearly meeting believes and conduct themselves. Actually, your remark is more than a little snide and condescending. Pink Dandelion's 2007 introduction has been the most helpful to me. Since it is Christian-Quaker in orientation you probably wouldn't be interested in it at all. But, it has helped me on this journey. It's title is BETWEEN GOD AND HISTORY (1959) by Richard Karl Ullmann (d. 1963) a German of Jewish descent who was a Quaker convert and served time in Buchenwald. After emigration to Britain, he taught at Woodbrooke. He was the London Yearly Meeting's official observer/representative at Vatican II. He was one of the few people at Vatican II whose Latin was so advanced that he didn't need a translator and could conduct lengthy and scholarly conversations in flawless Latin with the participants about fine points of their debates.
@@josephr.gainey2079 Again, where is the Bible? Any place for it? Does it have any authority?
Hi How do quakers respond to the problem of evil? Specially the non justified evil that has nothing to do with human acts. Thank you very much
Hi there, I really enjoy your content, and i would love to know what aspects made you favour Quakerism over unitarian universalism because they sound very similar to me in terms of principles. I'd love to see some comparison. Much appreciated
Hi! Thank you very much for reaching out! It’s a very good question, I’ve been wanting to do a video on this for a while, I might have someone who can talk about UU a bit more knowledgeably so I shall see how that goes. I suppose, being very simplistic about it, I hadn’t really heard of Universalist Unitarians when I began my spiritual journey. But you’re right, on paper there are lots of similarities…
@Quake-It-Up Thank you very much for your reply. Im finding it hard to decide which direction suits me best. I'm more inclined towards UU theology, but I feel Quakerism suits me more in practice... Im kind of stuck!! But your work is really helping me. And I'd love to see your views on UU Much appreciated
4:23 meditation begins Wonderful experiment! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching 🙂
I Thank Thee.
Greeteth I Thee Brotheren. I Speak Thou, Thee , Thine.
Thank you so much for this personal and energetic communication which I will be passing on to others. Made me smile and I feel a heart-recognition with many of the points made. You have captured so well the ordinary and acessible invitation to 'live better' through the Quaker testimonies
I kept going back to try to understand what he's saying about what to read regularly for inspiration, but he says it so fast, I can't understand it.
This was fascinating.
It's interesting, young man, but you are droning in parts.
Don't worry about the titles my friend. Just read Romans chapters 1-6. The best bible tract there is. It is believing in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. Receiving the gospel by faith. Demoninations are not there🙏only the body of Christ, baptised by the spirit the moment we believe👍
Thank you for the video on this, I'm still discerning if being Quaker is what I'm being called to and hearing your perspective and where Quaker thoughts on the testimonies it's very helpful
I miss the theological level a bit.
I too have been thinking about this lately. You may be interested in Just Peacemaking theory and Johan Galtung's Conflict Triangle theory.
I became interested in Quakerism while watching a Netflix film. My lifetime religion is Catholic. But I find myself questioning the faith of my childhood. This familiar doctrine disappoints me in today's world. I guess I am an old hippie at heart. Well anyway, you gave me food for thought. Hello from Illinois, USA.
22:25 you say this sarcastically. Just want you to know yes some of us really are clamouring for that. Can’t wait to hear a good summary
🤩 it will be intense.
I love the appearance of your cat’s paw!
Never quite made a full appearance in this one!
Oh my, best laughs here: the story about Wm Penn -- "it better be true"! LOL And yes, that was West Jersey. (now better known as South Jersey)
I knew there was something in that, but couldn’t find it stated… thanks for sharing! Oh I hope it is, especially the’ Friend Charles’ bit…
I went to my first meeting today. Got to meet some Friends and got a welcome pack with some literature I've been reading and it was great. I found the meeting quite profound and tranquil, and found an answer to a question in my own faith in the stillness after the first person's ministry - the question had been on the back of my mind for a long time. I was open about being a Pagan interested in the Quaker path and everyone was cool about it. I'll definitely be going back again.
That’s great! Glad it was a positive experience for you 🙂
Catholic Quietism had a strong influence on early Quakers, particularly the writings of Madame Guyon.
A very good point!
I am a Friend in a sect of one. Just me.
Saint Agustine's most painful and long lasting sin was his stealing an apple, and as a boy. Yours might be eating more than three biscuits on a Sunday in November, 2024. May God forgive you.
What's the Lancashire hate for?
I’m a Yorkshireman 😁
I wonder if Quakers might one day use Friend as a title instead of Mr, Ms, etc.
Amongst Quakers I think we do, or forego Mr/Ms and just to with first names… I think more and more companies are doing the same though for different motivations!
One frustrating thing about UK GEs is that Quaker republicans are effectively barred from standing as MPs. This is because a republican Quaker can't make an affirmation of loyalty to the monarch. Same principle applies for Quakers who are in parties that are secessionist, such as SNP and PC. It's pretty ridiculous that MPs have to swear an oath to the king but not to their constituents. It, along with other aspects, somewhat undermines the credibility of describing the UK as a democratic state (which it has really only been since 1928).
