It certainly can! I had the original Columbia LP, and subsequently a double CD from EMI, and now an ICON box from Warner. There is also a live version also very good: I think this is the studio version. It has long been on of my favourite performances, along with Yves Nat and Horowitz.

Bravo!!! Finally, Schumann Carnaval! I was disappointed with Moseiwitsch. I am studying Carnaval now and can't wait to perform it. (I have recorded Kreisleriana, feel free to listen to it on my channel - it has become a reference for Schumann lovers)

An overwhelming beautiful and exciting performance!-Dame Myra Hess is (as usual) heartwearming in this concerto-but the big surprise is the peerless accompaniment of Sir Malcolm Sargent-staggering!

When Sandor plays these, you can see why Busoni said, "Now this is something really new." I was at the first performance of Bartoks piano reduction for the Concerto for Orchestra. Sandor played. The auditorium was half empty!!

One of my all time favourites. I got b'ham library to order this in and when I first listened I was captivated. Rediscovered it in my 30s in Derbyshire in winter with which I will now always link it. A forgotten gem, and in my opinion a far superior work to the symphonic variations which is one of the few bax works I don't have much time for. Re Harriet and Arnold, bax also cheated for about 20 years on Harriet with a lady called Mary gleaves. Thanks for uploading this early version of this piece played by its original dedicatee, it has worn well. Still prefer the fingerhut version though!

It's got plenty of mania. Plus subtlety and a very unusual refinement. And totally Schumannesque too. And yes, she was also a serious concert pianist -- what's wrong with that?

Excellent Choice, James! Arnold Bax is the great "unsung" hero of British Classical Music and Winter legends is a masterpiece. I first became interested in Bax about 40 years ago (Neville Dilkes's recording of "Dance in the Sunlight", a Classic, was my introduction). Harriet Cohen sounds a bit "fuzzy" but if you want a bright & sparkling rendition I can recommend the Chandos recording with Bryden Thomson and Margaret Fingerhut. Don't hesitate to buy this one, it's a "keeper"!!!

The sonata is known as 'The Cuckoo' in that it references a pattern found in the bird's song. It is a self-portrait of the master in what he called "an unbuttoned mood." But the little G major is rich in its terse concision, with a sorrow laden songful Andante. Backhaus plays it brilliantly here before an audience in Carnegie Hall.

Fabulous. I considered my fortunate to have met and gotten to know Shura when he gave concerts in NYC and stayed at the Hotel Pierre where I worked for a few years. He was a charming and very unpretentious man.... a delight. I heard him in concerto and recital quite a few times...marvelous!!!!!

  • @nosehow2liv525

I was there!! I've never forgotten the thrill of a Fantastic Tale, almost an adventure, never sure (one hoped to be shura....!), what might happen next, yet all with a musicality and pianistic quality found nowhere else. Shura's "events" were unique and were never repeated identically next time or ever really in the studio where he was mostly uninspired. One didn't want to leave the hall, to face the ordinary world again after living a time-stopped magical universe.... From memory, Wilhelm Kempff was programmed, but had to cancel and Shura leapt up at last moment, something he often did; i heard him replace also Gilels, Perlemuter, Vasary and Ogdon! Thank you for this wonderful moment relived.

Received today the Complete Recordins of Alicia de Larocha for Decca. And one of the first pieces I heard were her two versions of the Carnaval. I love Alicia and her Carnaval, as just about everithing else she plays, is wonderfull. But it does not compare to Novaes' version... Novaes' carnaval is unique and apart from the amzing ease and virtuosity she plays it all, the whole thing is build up with suche imagination that all other versions sound just flat! Nothing is just played here, but part of a build up of colours, of sounds, of effects that it is very difficult to imagine how she could design it all in her mind and make it come out in sound!

Very good sound quality, thank you!
