Welcome to Doc on Wheels (formally John Doc Bike Restorations)
I have been riding and working on motorcycles for 40 plus years, like many of us, it is a passion in life. I particularly like bikes from the 60s to the 90s, and these will be the main feature of the channel, however I just love most things on two wheels no matter what era it comes from!
I hope to share some of my experiences of buying, restoring and riding these motorcycles.
Work is done from humble premises and with few specialised tools, so I hope viewers who are watching can gain insight into their own restorations.

I don't think you would be disappointed in the CB.
Hi. Great video. I think that metal pipe is for permanent connection to the fuel tank of a vehicle, when it’s used as a parking heater. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for your comment. I can see how that would work and it's a nice addition to the kit for vehicle users, the pipe could also fit into the supplied plastic tank from the top as apposed to the bottom feed type.

Yes, I would think so. I am pretty careful in putting clean stuff in, but you can't always be sure. The metal pipe gives another option, a better one I would say.
Certainly one of the worst looking.
My first big bike, which I really loved (until some muppet knocked me off it at night). Replaced it with a 600 Hornet which I have had ever since. Have toured Southern Spain, France, Scotland and The Isle of Man.
The Hornet is a nice bike!
in me notes perfect 500 cc parallel twin project looks lil diffrent thougs for noobs very close setup 👌🏻 at end 2 whells engine seat and drivewhell 😉👌🏻🍿 cb is good bike in its dispalcement class so gs 500 er5 gpz 500 its good and consider power level we csn also add to this class monster 600 or xj 600 diversion or szr 660 close to gs500 /er5 etc 👌🏻 but perfect 500 cc paralell twin look like this 👉🏻 fuel injection weater colling teeth steeel wheell as valve drive train + valves on screw 2 per cylinder nothing more is ncessery for 60 hp from 500 cc engine 🤷🏻♂️ and if you dont need 4 valve per cylinder like in cb than for th they setup as many valves 🤷🏻♂️ nobody knows but whatever ok further 👉🏻 52.5 nm or even 55 nm at 6000 rpm with 50 -52 nm at 4000 rpm and 50 -52 nm at 8000 rpm for daily riding best rpm range be 4-8 k rpm 👌🏻in fact in cb its also this range just me project be there much stronger 👌🏻 and 60 hp at 9000 rpm perfect linear power build 0 bumps holes and other rapidly increasing power 💩 just pefect linear power curve with strong low and midrange and wide peak power 😎🌪️👌🏻 rpm limiter 11000 rpm stroke 55 mm max avg piston speed 20 m/s 👌🏻 + 5 speed gearbox with longer 1 gear than in cb 500 fpr longer time after launch from stop light before you need to upshift = more comfortable setup 👌🏻 cb stpck have like probabaly 60 km/h at 10000 rpm vs perfect be around 70-80 km/h in this case power torque level asf 👌🏻 5 gear at 100 km/h 5000 rpm whells 120-160 /17 suspension front usd fork 40 mm/10 cm stroke rear 2 shocks or one central whatever also 10 cm stroke preload front and rear 👌🏻 overall chasis and frame must be very stable which in cb 500 isint when ypu push bike hard through corners 👌🏻 breaks front 320 mm /4 piston rear like 240 /1 piston weight distribution with rider in newutral position and 50% fuel in tank 50-50 vs cb have 45/47 front 55/53 rear 👌🏻 +/- what mean me bike will be less understerr =faster take off corners 🌪️👌🏻🍿 whats more 185 kg with full tank 15 litres whellbase 140 seat hight 82 rake 24 ergo corpse 20 degree hips 70 degree knee 70 degree +/- +cruisecontrol ,abs ,steel breaks cable , minimalistic single speedo like in triumph scrambler 900 like for me taste + speedo scale on bottom + shiftlight like in triumph sttreet triple 1050 😉👌🏻 and yea that be perfect 500 cc like for me 😎👌🏻 cb is good but not perfect ☕️👌🏻me hipotheticsl project would beat cb in basicallly each aspect including maintenance service costs and capscity of service pr complication ,elasticity ,chasiss stability ,ergo geaometry weight distribution breaks agresivness in max performance also be lil 5 kg less 3 hp more especiallly in 0-100 km/h stats where cb have huge diffrences between 1 and 2 gear where me project will have much closer those gears give it more acg power for sccelerstion at this speed rsnge so 4,6 vs 4,0 sec be like elasticity last gear 100-140 9,5 vs 6-6,5 sec asf 👌🏻 bad news is that thers no perfect bike for me on market today all have some errors from me point of view 🤷🏻♂️👌🏻☕️

I have the same bike, for 30 years now. Still the first edition with rear drum brake. I totally love it. I even went from Portugal (where I live) to Germany, and back, with my wife, top case, pillions, tent and sleeping bags. Reliable as it gets.
Olá! Não foi chato/desconfortavel? Anda na moda CC altas e tou na dúvida quanto a um gl500, com receio de ser fraca para viagens a dois na autoestrada. A cb não tem carenagens, não fica super cansativo após algum tempo a alta velocidade? E 500cc chegam para levar duas pessoas e bagagem?
@@pedroclaro7822 Olá Pedro, há 30 anos, tinha 31 anos. :) Naquela altura, sem problema, incluindo auto-estrada. Uma para-brisa ajudou. Hoje, com 61 anos, já não serve para fazer viagens longas, e tornei a moto novamente "naked", sem acessórios; só para andar na cidade e arredores. Temos uma Honda VFR800X Crossrunner, e uma BMW K1200LT; para viajar. Abraço, e boas curvas.

I loved my little GPZ500S, everything seems to be detuned and nerfed these days...
How many miles did it last? There’s on for sale near me. 50k kms for 1K€

I had a GPZ500 a few years ago, it is comparable to the CB, should also be a reliable bike, but not many of them around now
@johndocbikerestorations831 mine destroyed 3 stators in less than 1000 miles, £390 a pop without labour and recovery etc, it was this fault on my bike and a few others that brought about a new hooped design rather than separate magnets... just my luck I had a doomed bike....
@@WessexBladesHandMadeKnives oof tough luck! My cbf125 is giving me trouble and I won’t spend that much repairing it… How many miles did it have? I might still go try it out and see if i feel any issues with it though
58bhp light as a feather revvy engine, great handling despite skinny tyres. Fantastic memories, makes a mockery of all the “new” 500s with 40-48bhp
Those are normaly made for restricted licenses though this cb 500 can be awesome but if you have 48hp max you cannot ride it
As you say, power to weight is much better than the later incarnations
These are really great bikes. I've put well over 100,000 miles on a pair of these, commuting to work. I still have one, and it's still fun. I usually ride a high miler BMW R1150GS Adventure, which I like, but the CB500 comes out as a reminder of what fun a simple 500cc bike is. It's like the essence of pure biking. Hnadles well enough to get the pegs down and surprisingly nippy if you wring its neck. They are also truly amazing for the polar opposite of where you are riding - for slamming through London traffic, there is nothing finer.

Cheer buddy, it's a 1979, think they called them a Z2 model
Also have a CB500, from 1994, even the same colour. 😃👍 I love that bike with all my heart. 😍 Back in 1995, my wife and I, plus top case, side bags, sleeping bags and tent, made it from Portugal to Germany and back, 5.500km. No complaint from the bike, no problems, just rolling and rolling and rolling. Even the suspension is the same. 😃 Reliable as can be. 👍
Great to hear about how good the CB500 has been for you and the adventures you have had on it. I hope to add a few to mine next year, will give it a good service over winter.

Had a couple of these in the UK and bought one in Spain this year. I have had many bikes over nearly 50 years and nothing has bettered the CB500 as an all round package.

john after you glued and hot stapled the inside . on the outside you could have used superglue and bicarb soda on the outside along the crack its not half as messy as the fiberglass and it sets like stone instantly and its easier to sand down.

Nice find buddy, yeah I’d put your lifan in it if your going to use it often. I used shires for the 12v wire conversion kit. Really looking forward to seeing your videos on this one

Yea agree, we gave it a few of shake downs over a couple of weeks after the build to make sure all was well. It was good experience for Grieg to get to know his bike. He has been out on it every day since!
Great video m8 it's your bike and you can do what you want with it . Has long as you keep the original bits It will still hold its value. I love my Chinese copy one. With the 125 engine in it. It's so much fun It turns me into Someone who should have an asbo 😂 Tearing about on it m8 go for it.

Grate video but can I ask one thing where did u order bearings and cups from as I'm having a mare finding some and tapered ones don't fit the 2009 model
Thanks for you comment. We were really lucky, I had an old bearing left over from some other job. The new kits that are available all seem to be too tall for the top of the frame. You can use the bottom ok and put ball bearings in the top, or the other option is the have the frame machined down a few mm for it to fit. I have come across this problem before and I think it is becoming really difficult to get thinner bearings. Hope you get it sorted out OK
@@doconwheels-c5m yes I have bought three different sets and they all sit too tall at the top so makes the bike feel like a boat I'm going to try the honda cbr125r 2014 ones they are the same diameter so in theory they should work I hope.. I only have the old top cup and ball-bearings the bottom one was smashed to bits 😭

Great review. I have one, bought in Stonehaven in 2009 just before I passed my test. I've still got it! Such a nice bike, and I also have a Nonfango rack. I like the panniers, they are slim but quite long. I worry slightly about replacement lenses for the indicators at the back, so I've secured mine with some tape - just in case.
@johnlesax Hi John, seeming many people have kept this bike long term, it's easy to see why after riding it for a while! Great to hear you still have your bike and enjoy it. On a nite of the rear nonfango lenses, mine were missing, I made up some crude ones that never really worked as I just could not get replacements. Eventually I modified the bracket to take small Oxford units, these look pretty good and work really well. Thanks for watching the video

Hi, I have just purchased a z250 from a friend of mine as a project but I can see I’m going to need replacement parts to get it to a reasonable standard, can you advise me where would be the best place to purchase whatever I’m going to need? I am a subscriber of your channel and have just finished watching you z200 rebuild and I would say that’s about the standard of finish I’m looking to achieve on my build. Hi Andy, I got some rare parts from Z Power in the UK, other stuff came from eBay. If you are not already a member I suggest joining the Z250 owners group on Facebook. I got some parts from those guys too. Wishing you well with your project and give me a shout if I can be of help.
Well worth doing John, I'm guessing it's quite a rare beast in the UK. I'd like one of these early bikes but the only ones I've seen for sale here in Oz are in awful nick. With the hi/lo box it'll be great on the steep trails & put many larger cc bikes to shame.

We called these ‘Yoghurt cartons’ back in the day in Australia because there was so much plastic on them. Absolutely awesome bike then and awesome now! Becoming quite collectible too. Great videos. Thanks for posting.👍🏻

Hello, I am also restoring mine, but having trouble on choosing products. Can you provide a list of the products and paint you used?
@sarmentinho Some parts from Dave Silver, others from sellers on eBay, the paint was from an auto supplier, 2k primer and base coat and 2k lacquer. I will do a video breaking down all parts and the costs
@@doconwheels-c5m thank you so much! My main concerns are to pick the correct primers, paints and rust treatments to mine. Currently my restoration is halted due to baby taking all the time, but your video felt so good to watch, I enjoyed a lot! 😊
@sarmentinho I hope you get progress with your project, you shoukd be fine if you stick to 2k primer and 2k solid black for the frame. Panels require plastic primer before painting, easily done. Good luck 👍
