At least it’s not the drums. As you said, you just need ample sound check time. Consider getting a drum amp or 2. I’d also recommend a pair of the Alesis ones. You can use one for the smaller venues (don’t borrow that Behringer, get your own purpose-made drum amps).

If you haven’t the time to make adjustments or can’t do a sound check forget it! Contrary to what a lot of people think you can’t just plug and play and if the other members of the band aren’t willing to give you that opportunity don’t expect to achieve a really positive E KIT experience !🥴

With the Pst7 vs oh say 2002 you get more hammering and probably better quality lathing. Less skilled labor (artisanship? ) of course is going to result in a more expensive cymbal. Does the extra labor and craftsmanship result in a better sounding cymbal? Maybe but not by much. Now to the Meinls. I've played on Classics Custom (B12 alloy) and MB10 models that I thought sounded as good as any 2002. Maybe better. Personally, I've never heard any of the PST series that really sounded good. I don't know if you did any post work on the audio but I do know that you used some pretty good mics. Those cymbals sounded "good" and even the best cymbals are going to sound bad with low quality mics. BTW I've noticed (or maybe just imagined?) that Paiste 2002 alloy cymbals usually don't really sound good until played played as part of a drum kit.

What are the benefits of getting ADA8200 instead of second UMC1820?

Seems to me the meinl classics and paiste pst 7 crash work in good together in this recording was there any processing done,.is my question would have liked to hear raw with no music comparison u had a very good demenstration with a song both cymbals agree seems they are both good sounding in this recording good job u play very good

Sir I can’t thank you enough for your profound statement regarding the ‘gear’. So many drummers let what the fans perceive as a drum kit dictate what they size kit they play. ‘It’s not the drums, it’s the drummer’, heard that for many years and they are words to live by. 75 years old, playing for 63. Great job. And yes I play electronic drums and the bands love them. Especially those that sing and use in ear monitors, ‘no cymbal wash’.

I had the same experience. Sounding great in a small venue but feeling lost in a bigger venue with a bass player who can compete with the bottom. So I started using a Mackie 15’ Thump and Behringer Eurolive PA/Monitor speaker that give more presence to everyone on stage. Thanks for your story regarding this matter!

I honestly knew, or was sure I knew, that it was the Behringer as soon as I heard the first cut. There's a sort of harshness that cheaper mics all seem to have. That said, it's a very good mic for the price.

I thought the c2 were the first group because they sounded muddy. Wow

Roland higher end TD kits are designed by morons for morons. It's 2024, and they still haven't designed their usb audio out tech. so it goes straight into a digital mixing desk for further individual channel processing combined with simultaneous left-right master playback by a front of house engineer.. as the same separate 28 audio channels that can be currently recorded straight into a DAW. And don't tell me it costs too much to replace the long out of date multiple audio outputs they keep putting on the flagship TD50x module, because the cost of Allen & Heath and its serious competitors' newer digital mixers, that incorporate this ability to input multiple individual channels via usb, have dropped through the floor. This is just another example of how Roland, Yamaha and the other bottom line electronic music instrument operators keep retarding musicians' choices by 20 years, while charging the earth for their crap products. We need new electronic music instrument companies that deliver real bang for buck.

Brother man I have been trying to learn this song since I was 11 years old. I can play most Mahavishnu but not Vitall Transformation... Sadly I do not know how to read or transcribe drum music. If you give online lessons I'm willing to learn. Brilliant job and good for you for not trying to do those insane rolls. I saw Mahavishnu rehearsing at the Village Gate 2 months before they cut their first album. Just like the record Billy was playing a 5 piece kit. I came in in the middle of a drum solo it was the most frightening speed I still ever seen a drummer play. McLaughlin was on the side of the stage with his jaw on the floor. So thank you for this and you're very clear understandable succinct lesson. I have one request. There is a song that I can't play and it shouldn't be as hard as this but it is. It's David Garibaldi with Tower of P😂ower playing the Oakland Stroke. Listen to the recorded version at the beginning and the end of Back to Oakland. There are videos on drumeo of David showing how to play it slow like really slow. And yet I still can't figure it out. I can never figure out where his "one" is. If you would give a lesson like this on that song, I will buy you a nice slice of pecan pie, or whatever pie you like. Drumming and drummers are such a great brotherhood. I've seen tons of guys try to teach this and they did it wrong and I couldn't get it. This weekend I shall pull out my kt😅😅 and try practicing this. I'm in my 60s it's been a lifelong journey. I don't know if you ever saw them live there are lots of tapes online but the best ones are the black and white tapes when they were playing on a college roof free for a bunch of students. The last time I saw them at the felt forum in New York shortly before they broke up they did so much of this and they played everything 10 times faster or more than the albums. And no matter where they went they never missed a beat. They always knew where they were they always went to other planets and they always were in sync even though you didn't hear it. What sample rate did you use on the HD192? Max on the ADA8200 is 48 kHz while the MOTU can go up to 192 kHz. Apples to apples would be 48 (or 44.1) on both, but that wouldn't be fair to the MOTU since it can go up to 192. I think 96 kHz is probably the most popular sample rate so I'd love to hear 96 on the MOTU versus 48 on the Behringer (I realize the UMC1820 can do 96 kHz but when paired with ADA8200 it would be limited by the 48 kHz max of the ADA8200).

Hey Gary, thanks for sharing your live experience with the edrums. I'm that guy also just a cat playing drums. Just want to say I owned a pair of edrum kits for the past 10 years but never played them on a live gig. I've done only studio work playing them. I always wanted to play them live but it never happened for whatever reason. nonetheless I been on a gig with another cat playing edrums and I must say it was a pretty cool set. Like you mentioned you have to have sound checks hours ahead balance the kit, monitoring has to be stellar for the rest of the band. to get the sound right. then that's with edrums or an acoustic set. the thing with acoustic set depending on the size of the venue or club you could get away with no mics on the kit. anyway keep up the great work. By the way the band sounds great!

What is the type of the Yamaha board you were talking about?

The correct placement is further into the drum, using the bottom lug screws to mount the mic holder. Simply take the mount off the top lug and move it down to the lower lug. Tighten everything and then rehead and tune. You'll never need to change your mic placement again. I've had mine in my drums (toms and kick) for years with zero issues. Compliments at almost every shows from the FOH tech.

I used single headed toms with evans hydraulics, micd from inside, absolutely amazing sound... Trying different heads and playing the toms like concert toms helps reducing weird overtones giving a more direct and defined note per drum! Just my advice for anyone wanting to experiment internal micing!

I have this stands and I use to have issues with a Snare Stand using a 13 Pearl Midtown Snare. Because the Snare are too lightweight, they literally walkway when I play a little harder! But I LOVE this stands!

I use the vh11. I cut out a piece of cardboard and placed it under the hi hat cylinder. Works way better. Cut a hole and place over the center cylinder shaft that goes up and down. Problem solved.

i loved your richie hayward section. i have been a fan since forever. great commentary. the current feat drummer, tony leone, alternates playing TLAH cymbal parts between right hand bell and left hand on the hi hat. Kudos to your live TLAH rendition.

Great review. With the 3500 dollar price point, you gotta take into consider the 27 individual tracks through usb. I cant tell you how much money i would have saved if something like that was available 10 years ago with the drums, interface, microphones etc i have bought

It sounds good, but I think there is more to it than this. Cobham rim-shots every stroke on the snare, apparently alternating left to right or right to left, rather than just grace notes with one hand.
