2020 Hyundai Kona EV road trip with range issue fix
In this video, I take my 2020 Hyundai Kona on a road trip to Tennessee from North Carolina. In the last video, I had an issue were the car was not reporting how much range it could get accurately. I then found out a trick that might have just fixed that issue which I will show in the video. I also included charging information and range information in the video.

How to stop leaking GI / Military canteen - simple fix for leaky cap

An easy fix for this, as de...

    Did you experience any significant throttling? I had a Nissan leaf before and when I tried to super charge it more than once back to back, it would throttle the charging to the point of making it impossible to road trip. Thinking about getting a Kona. Wondering how much better the experience would be if I went from San Diego to Phoenix and back. Took me about 15 hours in the leaf one way because of throttling.

    • @theelectricreality
      @theelectricreality 2 месяца назад

      We didn't experience any throttling until the state of charge became higher which is typical. Once you get to about 80% the charging speed will be slower due to the way lithium battery chemistry works. The Nissan Leaf does not have a liquid cooled battery but instead relies on air cooling which is not efficient especially when the vehicle is not in motion. That is one of the downfalls about the Nissan Leaf is that as the battery gets warm on a road trip it can dramatically impact charging speeds. I would say if you're able to find a good price on a Kona to trade in the leaf and get the Kona because it will be a vehicle with better range and better charging speeds even though the Kona is not as good as more expensive EVs like the ionic 5 or Ford Mach E for example. It is a good contester for the price though. So far we really liked it.

    Thanks for the video. When you see EA chargers that are offline, make sure you report it in the app. I've found they do actually send out a technician when a report is made. Also recommend signing up for EVGo Autocharge, it does work with the Kona. Makes the whole process super easy and more reliable. Newer EVGo stations are much faster. I've done four road trips so far with my Bolt EUV. Most recent was ~1500 miles all around the Midwest from Ohio to IN, IL, MO, and (briefly) KY. I've also used the rule of thumb that filling up the distance you need to go + 50 miles always gets you where you need to go.

      You will not need to take the temp cluster out but you will need to take the radio out depending on whether or not the front dash piece is one pieces or two pieces.

    Thanks! For me, the nut that this bolt goes into had become dettached from the seat frame (a few puny welds held it on) and had fallen off, so the bolt wouldn't tighten onto anything. If this happens to you, the fix is a bit tricker but still quite doable. Move aside the upholstery on the seat and fish around for a bit with a flashlight to find the nut. It won't have gotten far. Then, do this same procedure as the video shows, albeit with a socket wrench holding the nut in place as you tighten with the T47

    By the way, if some of you don't have sandpaper, just take an old nair file that's as fine as possible and just try to file the plastic layer off evenly, then screw the cap on tightly and see how your ring looks, if some lines are thinner then just sand some more there and you are done. Fixes it every time.

    I've used these to jump start batteries that have a slight charge, but not enough to start the vehicle. They work good, but when I tried to start a car with an absolutely dead battery it didn't work. I watched a review with a jump starter called Povasee, that jump starter actually started both a small block V8 without a battery in it and a older Winnebago without a battery in it. It didn't just turn the motor over, it literally started the engine and the engine ran for a few minutes. I don't know if there's some kind of electronic in the Halo that prevents it from starting a car with a dead battery (I know those Schumacher jump starters at Walmart have electronics in the that won't allow you to jump start a dead battery) all I know is even after I left the Halo connected to the battery for at least 15 minutes, the vehicle would not start.

    Light switch knob. Actually an easier way to get it out. Put your hand up underneath the dash where light switches is. Reach up above the switch. There’s a little button that sticks up, you push down on the button. You can feel it you don’t have to see it, jut push down/button and pull the switch knob out. When you pull it out, the lights come on. Put the knob back in. Just don’t push hard and not all the way in. Just enough to where you can feel it go in, then headlights go out…its all good.
