Has Bethesda Ever Written a Good Story?
Has Bethesda ever written a truly great story? In this deep-dive analysis, we examine Bethesda’s storytelling evolution by looking at Starfield, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and their narrative shortcomings. We contrast these recent titles with classics like Oblivion Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption-games where writers successfully combined player agency, engaging characters, and emotional stakes in ways Bethesda's newer releases often lack. Discover why Oblivion stands out as Bethesda’s last storytelling triumph, and how characters like Martin Septim created emotional resonance that modern games in the studio’s lineup just can’t seem to capture. This video explores what makes a truly great story ...

Bethesda Didn't 'Fall Off' and Here's Why
Просмотров 19 тыс.Месяц назад
In this video, we tackle a heated debate: has Bethesda really fallen off? Recently, critics have claimed that Starfield marks the culmination of years of decline, painting Bethesda as a studio stuck in its old ways, more focused on hype than delivering the rich RPG experiences they were once known for. But I disagree with that. I believe Bethesda hasn't fallen off at all-they're still doing wha...

Does House of the Dragon Redeem Game of Thrones?

I think it might be time to forgive HBO. As we near the end of the second season of House of the Dragon, it's safe to say that the show has revitalized the public's interest in Westeros and the politics of the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon has been performing well in terms of viewership, and for good reason-it's incredible. Despite the disappointing end of Game of Thrones, it seems HBO and t...

Why you should NOT watch The Witcher Season 3 (and why you should)

The Witcher Season 3 is the best the show has been but to be honest its a bit too little way too late.
Netflix FAILED The Witcher

Ahead of The Witcher season 3 launch, its a good time to look back and see what went wrong with the first two reasons. Here, I go over my reasons for why I think Netflix's "The Witcher" has failed.
Starfield is much harder for moders then the previous games. For second the game has price full AAA title so mods cant be a factor. Third, bethesda wants control the mods and let people pay for them. Fourth, nobody wants make mods to Starfield, because it is not interesting world, campaign is stupid and lazy, and lore is dumm.
Skyrim wasnt good game.
This game is great. I don't understand ll the hate at all. There's youtubers dedicated to attacking everything Bethesda does! If you hate the game, don't talk about it, go play something else. Let's us fans enjoy ourselves!
I've been playing it since day one and I still love it!🔥
Imagine being rich and still deciding to work as a regular hooker. Deserved.
Bethesda didn’t fall off? Explain Starfield.
Because we been microtransaction yall to death and yall dumb ass's keep buying it. We're actually rich.

Nice vid. Liked and subscribed. 👍
I'm hoping modders add Skyrim to starfield someday.
You nail my biggest gripe: to unlock the "fun" you have to play for dozens of hours as Bethesda drip feeds you basic gameplay elements via the skill trees. It's easily my least favorite skill tree in that regard.
despite my praise of the game, I have to agree with you. I genuinely thought they just decided to make flying ships, incredibly unfun, but it isn't after you spend a significant amount of investment into the ship, perks and buying new ships and modifying ships that it becomes worthwhile and I would say a very enjoyable experience.
the beauty of the story of new vegas is that you complete it by doing basically a bunch of side quests for certain factions instead of just following a main quest
Incredibly boring game.... It lacks everything.
Seeing the reception to starfield made me want to go back and investigate what I actually enjoyed about the previous bethesda games which legitimatly had a profound effect on me when i was younger(especially skyrim), only to be almost immediatly confronted by just how mediorcre the game actually seems to me now. I was reminded of the something said by Andre Gregory about how he fondley rememberd a movie as a child only to watch it as a adult and realized he acutally loathed it all those years, and honestly I am beggining to feel that this is my relationship with these games. The modding aspect for me has almost become a ship of theseus issue where i cannout seem to play the game unless I have modded every aspect of it, often to the point where the game will just not start, i dont really feel that any part of the game is good, and yet I always seems to be pulled back into it out of a strange yearning to want to like it again. It is very strange and I dont think I feel this way about anything else.
For me Skyrim is not worth playing without heavily modding the game. Truthfully I think modern games changed so much our expectations for games changed as well. I don't think we should assume that the game itself was always shit and we were just kids that's why it was good. At the time Skyrim was amazing and now with mods it's playable. The problem is Bethesda have really got set in their ways and have avoided evolving beyond Skyrim, which doesn't work for today's audience.
@@TahmidHO I think alot of what I love about the elder scrolls is just the lore and world aswell, more than really anything else, with fallout it is more vibes but witht he elder scrolls it is this sense of uncovering the world, and with starfield it is really just the most bland quests and boreing rocky planets. I also think that they have shed to many creatives, so much of what makes the elder scrolls unqiue doesnt come from corperate and technical guys like todd howard but from wacky artists like Michal Kirkbride who have talent as writers
That meshes with what I've told people about Starfield: factions like the UC Vanguard and Crimson Fleet are worth a playthrough, exploration suffers in the same way as Daggerfall(bunch of procedurally generated nothing), and Bethesda kept things very 'safe and sanitary' to avoid potentially offending anyone. But also, frustratingly, a lot of it feels like one step forward and one-and-a-half steps back: Outposts, companions, radiant quests, etc.
I am still having fun. Outposts, ship building, ex[loration...
how do u only have 400 subs???!!
I really think Fallout 4 was really bad for storytelling.
Nah, it wasn't anything phonmeon but certainly not bad. People like to compare it to New Vegas, which isn't fair imo since you literally compare it to the best written game ever. Some video game stories weren't just bad but straight out not important, like Capcom Monster Hunter and Street Fighter. The story in these games were so unimportant that they didn't even bother to voice most of it.
@GHOSTRIDER373737 I mean more so towards what Bethesda does best. I like how Starfield was a return to form for their storytelling. I hate the fact that I can't just join the brotherhood of steel and ignore the main quest in Fallout 4, or any other faction quests since everything in Fallout 4 is tied to the main story which sucks. I think that's the reason why the game feels so linear. And it's horrible for role playing since no matter what you do, you're always going to have the exact same playthrough.
@@Joseph-wh5of I'm on the opposite of this, I like that you can join all the factions in Skyrim and Fallout 4 and get the most out of your game in just one save, I had 1800 hours each for both games with just one character. However, I think this approach does not work for Starfield, it make sense that the factions in Skyrim and Fallout 4 would all want you in since people with your capabilities are not easy to find. Starfield, however, is a bit weird when Ryujin hires you despite you being a pirate or you become a ranger despite you being a marine of the UC.
@GHOSTRIDER373737 I have to disagree with you. I think you are ignoring those story faults in Skyrim and Fallout because you like those games. I am presuming that you don't care for Starfield. In Skyrim, it doesn't make sense that you can join the vampire clan then become a vampire Lord, join the thieves Guild and steal and beat up people, join the dark brotherhood and murder, and then turn around and be accepted by the Companions. Which is a faction that cares for loyalty and honor as well as helping people. Fallout 4 does it the worst because every faction is tied to the main story, making the roleplaying non-existent since you will always have to interact with the main story and the same story beats over and over again in order to access certain parts of the factions. Which in turn makes every play through feel very similar. Starfield is a return to form on how Bethesda used to do factions with games like Oblivion and Skyrim. You can join all the factions on one play through if you want to, but you're not required to. You can roleplay and skip the main story since it's not tied to the factions and still enjoy them.
Daggerfall
well said
I consider Starfield writing good. What do you consider bad story telling? When i hear people say bad storytelling, I hear stories that goes against the average story conventions but no one seems to give me a clear understanding of what they consider bad and why its objectively bad in the place. I mean can you tell the difference between Subjective and Objective?
In the video I go over the 4 key aspects on story telling for games that I find would be objective as it just looks at what is there. Personally I didn't mind Starfields story all that much while playing, but in retrospect and being a bit more analytical it is quite poor.
@TahmidHO I've played Starfield multiple times and i can definitely say it isnt poor in its storytelling. I felt like what you listed out doesn't betray normal story conventions and it actually follows most if not all laws of objective storytelling. It has a beginning, middle and end. Charcter development of both side and main characters, Presents a Thematic overtone and undertone that is spread throughout the whole game in both gameplay and story, Follows the rules that it sets out in its own continuity and has proper narrative pacing, Presents a message after moments of buildup and utilities it that presents a proper payoff. Sorry but this video doesn't prove to me that Bethesda is declining in story presentations. In fact it's just as good if not better the Morrowind.
@pixelcount350 I think the problem is that people played Red Dead Redemption or Baldur's gate 3 and expect every single game to be the same. Starfield, really is just another Bethesda storyline. You can take it or leave it. It's nothing amazing, but it isn't horrible either.
The newer Bethesda games, from Oblivion onward, have some big problems for what are supposed to be RPGs. It’s not just the writing, which is honestly pretty awful compared to other RPGs, but also the gameplay itself. Take their most popular title, Skyrim. Combat is just clicking or holding down the mouse, with no real tactics whatsoever. The stories are simple and cliche, the characters feel flat, and there are no real consequences for anything you say or do. You end the civil war, and nothing changes. You assassinate the emperor, and nobody seems to care. I’ve never really understood why people call Skyrim a masterpiece. Sure, I get that it’s easy to pick up and play, but it barely feels like an RPG. It doesn’t even have real classes or meaningful decisions. The game is so straightforward that even young kids can play it without any trouble. Nothing you do matters, and the gameplay couldn’t be simpler. It mostly appeals to the mainstream, but good RPGs have always been a bit niche. Skyrim is like a mirage; it looks deep and complex at first glance, but there’s nothing beneath the surface. And I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. Bethesda’s recent games make it pretty clear they’ve lost touch, putting out shallow games that seem to lack the care or skill to make something truly good.
I mentioned this in my previous videos comment section but I find that Skyrim was a fluke success in all honesty and it reinforced a lot of bad decisions. I think they did just enough that made people go crazy at the time but it has such obvious flaws. Like you mention combat, in the same year as got Witcher 2 which is leaps and bounds ahead in combat.
@@TahmidHOThe combat in witcher 2 is pretty bad.
@@TahmidHO I have sort of come to regard skyrim as a fluke aswell that is a good way to put it. Really it is very similar to fallout 4 and starfield in its flaws, but it also still had that little spark of greatness embeded within the series in morrowind that perfectly melded with the technology. It sort of the last remnant of that earlier era of pulp fanatsy that has sort of been ressurected a bit with baldurs gate 3
But I'm already subscribed good sir 🤌
Legend!
Maybe I will pick this up when on sale to fill the void left by Dragon Age
I just can't get enough of this game, just like I always do with Bethesda games. After over 300 hours, I was finally getting ready to put it down for a while when mods came into being and it immediately lit the fire again and I am still playing it. I play it the same way I do every Bethesda title in that I actually role play and I never seem to get bored with it.
Gotta love when youtubers want to tell us what WE expect, and what WE should be ok with. Stick to your own damn opinion and leave it at that. 😂
The whole "Their graphics are bad" argument feels like a lazy "Hold on, I need one last bulletpoint" nitpick, you cannot tell me Starfields grahpics are bad, that is stupid. other than that, this is a very good video, well articulated and makes sense.
Personally most of the games I play these days are older titles so graphics mean nothing to me. But so many people bring it up, especially in my last video about Starfield, I just decided to say it so I beat the Bethesda shill allegations 😂
The last two games were doomed from the very beginning during the concept stages of development. It’s no longer about just making a great game, it’s about reaching the biggest audience possible. It was decisions made by upper management, like having an always Online Fallout game without NPCs and creating a “realistic” space game with a thousand planets that doesn’t have other intelligent life ( no creatures aren’t the main form of intelligent life people are interested in)
But how realistic is it that within a galaxy several planets have intelligent life? It would make the most contextual sense that space is vast and empty with only humans as the main intelligent population. The rest I do agree with, I don't like the trend of trying to reach the widest audience rather than deliver a brilliant game to your core audience and then rely on them to be so annoying about how awesome the game is that people come in as a result. That's how all of our favorite series started off.
Thats exactly the problem with making a realistic space game. People play video games to escape reality and have fun. I knew even before the game released when I heard Starfield was taking a “ realistic approach to space” that for the most part it would be a boring experience that wouldn’t be able to capture peoples imagination.
@WarNvrChanges Fair enough. I think in all honestly Bethesda is lacking a lot of creativity and needs to reinforce that department.
@@TahmidHO Couldn’t agree more. I do however think there are individuals that work for BGS that have the ability to make compelling / interesting content but when they’re being handicapped by decisions made by upper management it makes it extremely hard to deliver that level of content. They are being forced to create content that fits within a very limited framework, if that makes sense. If I were a writer told that I was making a space game that “had to have a realistic approach” and “ couldn’t have other intelligent life forms” it would severely limit my ideas of creativity. Same for making an always online Fallout game with no NPCs. This isn’t even considered the limitations put on them by having to completely rework and basically force the creation engine to adapt to something it was never intended to make. ( a space game/ an online Fallout game)
@@TahmidHO I think this is exactly why we’ve seen so many people leave BGS. They’ve gotten completely away from the reasons people loved their games and the reason devs wanted to work at BGS to create their games.
the issue really is that Besthesda basically had a monopoly on open-world fantasy rpgs back then but now you have things like The Witcher and Xenoblade competing with them and the cracks are starting to show when you can compare them with other open-world fantasy rpgs
Agreed
The views on mods couldn't be more accurate! What could be more meaningful than playing in "your customized world"? This is something that other studios don't have. Btw I think one advantage of Starfield compared to previous BGS games, absolutely it's quite obvious, it's more modern. For example, Skyrim, being an older game, requires a lot of prerequisite mods to run properly, but Starfield is much more convenient and has fewer requirements in modding.
Idk how to feel In retrospect. There are moments , sure. But the quests are sooooooo bad. I was constantly wishing the quests would end.
I heard only slurping sounds. Is it just me?
Yes they have, why? Because in the early days (so Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion) they were AT THE CUTTING EDGE when it came to open world video games, but that sadly changed with Skyrim (which IMHO is boring compared to Oblivion) and sadly they've been on the decline ever since, especially since Toddy-Boy Howard still thinks he's the GOAT, just like Mr. Pagliarulo does (who's about as good a writer as Uwe Boll - so not very good!)...frankly those two are the main ROADBLOCKS that hold Bethesda back these days!
Bethesda's move towards simplification has been ongoing since Oblivion. The difference with Starfield is that they also removed the thing that saved earlier games - the exploration. Even modding can't save it because it can't do anything about the underlying systems that blight the game.
Came to downvote a bullshit dick riding opinion. Being positive about this is the problem with people. Don't support BS
Someone stole OP's sweet roll and it shows
I think the problem with Starfield is it’s pretty great until it’s not and then when it’s not, it’s hard to see it the same again. The core gameplay is fun for limited time, but once you get the point of no return, it becomes really soulless and you almost start to feel stupid for having enjoyed it. It’s almost like how when you’re really hungry a McDonald’s double cheeseburger with fries can tastes delicious but then you can finish it and realize it was actually kind of terrible.
You deffo havent played the game. Also the people complaining about empty planets yet non of them bothers to Base build on them. Its a space game, what did they expect?
SCAB
"they never changed" finally someone who gets it.
You're wrong about skyrim , skyrim was a fall from oblivion and a fail. Too streamlined and lonotomized story and quest with little tonno improvement
Too many haters as far as Starfield is concerned. They will hate no matter what. It isn't about the game or Bethesda. They think opinions that are different than theirs don't matter. YES THEY DO MATTER. I also love Starfield and Shattered Space, although the DLC wasn't long enough. It was still fun and exciting for a couple of days. Great to find a channel that loves Starfield. Thanks.
😂
Bethesda destroyed the fallout franchise
My guy the mod section the video is so bad. When I buy I game I buy a game not the modding community. If you have to use mods to make the game better the game isn’t that good
I agree. It's what I said right after the modding section lol
I hate both side of the thing with this game, the people who bash it all the time and the people who think it's god's gift to gaming lol. The game is meh imo, it has it's moments but also suffers from not really doing enough all that well.
"Bethesda didn't fall off" - proceeds to explain how Bethesda fell off due to reduction in depth and not being as handcrafted as before, etc So I don't necessarily agree that Bethesda was trying to streamline its game mechanics. If you look at all the game mechanics, they're essentially copy-pasted them from Fallout 4 in their entirety. Except that crafting and settlement building have actually lost their flexibility and increased in complexity. For example having to deal with hubs and do research before you can properly craft is an increase in complexity. Compared to Fallout 4, what they've increased is the need for more grinding (that applies to skills / leveling up too and their lock-picking mini game), which is the direction they were going for since Fallout 76 and sort of wasting your time with procedural content rather than interesting plot and side stories. You can say that this is the direction they were going for, sure, especially if you point at Fallout 76, but it's the direction the fans have always disliked, and it reached the critical point of "not worth it" with Starfield I also disagree with your point about having more options. Where are there more options? That's just simply inaccurate. The options for the ending, for how the side-quests and factions play out, range from non-existant to unimpactful, and I'm surprised you say otherwise, but not surprised you didn't provide any examples. Compared to Fallout 4, where you can either focus on rebuilding the commonwealth with minutemen, saving synths or spreading the power of the twisted Institute or militant Brotherhood, or in Far Harbor where you can literally destroy the entire Island with all its factions or make them peaceful with each other, the options are way more impactful and meaningful than anything you find in Starfield. The only thing that you could argue about is the ending of the Crimson fleet faction, except it literally has no meaningful impact on the world or on you whether you decide to destroy the Space Navy or the Space Pirates - you don't become a hero nor a highly pursued villain / war criminal, nor does it become easier or cheaper to be a pirate, all you get is difference in money and bounty. The biggest reason to play RPG video games is that your choices matter, and Bethesda made a game that's devoid of choices that matter, and if that's cool with you, alright, but it's not cool with a lot of people and it's the reason the game stopped being interesting to me
Their games have gotten worse with every release, their leadership is unwilling to change and blaming us for their incompetence and stubbornness.
As long as you stay on the surface level of the game, it can be fun. But if you think there is any depth to something or go try to explore without directly heading to a unique location. It will get extremely boring really fast. I’ve never tried to like a game so hard before, even now as I’m watching this video hoping to be inspired, as I view the gameplay it just reminds me how empty it really is. Bottom line is Bethesda did’t take any creative risks in developing an engaging story. It’s not like Skyrim where I can post my character up at the Candlehearth Hall inn listening to beautiful in game music and read a surprisingly good book that i found on a shelf at a bandit camp after rampaging through them as a werewolf. It wasn’t hard to like that game, it was hard to put it down.
09:20 are you serious? From Software's games are only getting harder. I remember coming to Demon's Souls after playing Elden Ring, and the bosses were shockingly easy.
ER was super easy.
